Hey, everyone! So it seems I used the word registration in my video in an incorrect way. Sorry about that! I meant to say that in order to fly with American Airlines, you will need to provide a LETTER from your doctor/mental health provider (not registration). In my experience, obtaining this letter that is good for a year for planes and for other things like housing, costs $100. This has been the case for me in three different cities in Florida with three different psychiatrists - it might be different for you!
What mine was free O.O... I've been on so many SSRIs and I'm currently on a benzo but my symptoms have gotten worse and we're trying to avoid meds so I brought up having an emotional support animal for both support at home since I live by myself and travel to see family. My doctor thinks its a good choice so I'm thankful.
Please read and share it! Hi Stephanie let’s make our voices be heard US Department of transportation is trying to pass a rule which will ban emotional support animals in flights. The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on Traveling by Air with Service Animals can be found HERE and provides the public with 60 days to comment on the proposed changes. www.transportation.gov/sites/dot.gov/files/docs/resources/individuals/aviation-consumer-protection/359646/traveling-air-service-animals-nprm.pdf
Thank you for your important information. It is always good to know what to expect and what to do when people have to take their pets with them. Thanks once again! You are wonderful!
thank you so much. my little dog, Brewski, and I will be flying together for the first time Nov. 2018 from Honolulu to San Diego. It will be a first for both of us, but I think we will be okay. Blessings to you and Dexter.
Hi there! What did you put for Describe what steps have been taken to prevent your animal from relieving itself during the flight and If your animal needs to relieve itself during the flight, describe how you would handle this to prevent a health and sanitation issue questions? I mean I know the obvious answers but what is the best answers? Thank you so much!
Ivon Chahal I would say you’d make sure to take your dog on a long, long walk right before you arrive to the airport. Also you’d check if your airport has pet relief stations. And you’d limit how much water your dog would get. If your dog needed to relieve itself, I’d make sure you’d pack disinfection wipes and poop bags / hand sanitizer for yourself and let a flight attendant know so you can dispose of those items properly! Hope that helps ☺️
Thank you for this. I will be traveling with my ESA pet and had so many questions. During take off and landing, was the airline okay with you having your pet on your lap?
So I just recently took a flight with my ESA dog and it was definitely one of the most stressful days of my life. I have confirmed documents by my therapist stating that my dog is an ESA and has all of the immunizations needed to fly. However, once I arrived, Delta denied me and my ESA access to the flight because she was a pitbull. I then had to buy a ticket with Alaska who let me aboard with my ESA no problem and they stated that is against the law to deny an ESA. I’ll be taking legal action against Delta, but let me just say it always isn’t so stress free for everyone due to discrimination against certain breeds.
Hi there. I plan on returning to the US (California) with my soon-to-be ESA (beagle). I heard that American Airlines no longer accepts ESAs. Are you familiar with which airlines or know a website that says which airlines are okay with them? Thanks in advance.
Hey, my name is Taylor and I have a question. I have very recently self diagnosed myself with anxiety or panic disorder. Why, bc I would get panic attacks almost everyday and if I was away from home for a long time I would get worse panic attacks. I knew about esa’s and service dogs before but only wanted a service dog because of my physical disabilities (severe asthma, severe allergies, acid reflux, and a low immune system) long story short my dog fell through. But know I’m getting very bad anxiety attacks and seriously have considered training my cat to be a esa. She is very calm and just in a few hours learned how to sit and stay. She is non aggressive and I know esas don’t have to be task trained but I really want her to be. Btw I’m 12, and I am finding it hard to go to people or let alone a psychiatrist. My mom doesn’t believe me and I can’t go to my dad bc he lives 5 hours away. What do I do?
ArtistInmy Soul hi Taylor. I’m so sorry you have been going through a lot. I would maybe reach out to a guidance counselor at school who could let your mom know about the importance of you going to therapy. I empathize with you a lot though. My mom never really believed in therapy at all. Maybe she could go to a therapy appointment with you and the therapist could talk to her after your appointment? I really hope your situation gets better. It must be so tough having these problems and not being able to get the help you need.
Thank you for this helpful information. I’m planning on talking to my doctor about getting an ESA letter. I’m just curious, but is traveling internationally with an ESA possible? I know there’s more you’ll have to do for international travel with pets in general, but I’m wondering if it’s possible to travel with them as an ESA at all.
What if your dog is a American pitbull terrier,American bulldog, and American staffordshire terrier. Would they still allow him? And if he can’t fit under the seat what would we have to do?
SIDE NOTE!!! American Airlines changed their policies with ESA pets on april 1, 2019. They are making people fill out a 3 page form. Each from the vet, doctor and a animal behavior form that's an agreement saying your pet will behave. Best advice is to check with your airlines. thank you for the video:)
did you have to show extra documents? like a written letter from the mental health doctor or certificate proving your dog has been trained to be an ESA?
My sister has a ESA, she's registered as one from her doctor, and we are going to get a travel pass or whatever it's called, but the certain airlines we are going on requires a behavior thing for some odd reason. Also, her dog looks a lot like yours! Lol.
DayWithPhae I set her as my profile picture. We are not completely sure what she is either, to be honest, but her previous owner said that she is a Bichon Frise, if I spelled that right, but recently, her hair was cut and we were shocked. She looks nothing like a bichon when her hair is cut, and we think her fur was just overgrown. Or maybe she's just a mix, we have no idea.
Wow, they really look so similar!! Yeah, we were the same way after we cut Dexter's hair short, his long hair is very scraggly and terrior like. I really am curious to get a DNA test on him, just to see what he's mixed of
Your sister's dog is not registered with anyone, because registration does not exist. Having a letter from a doctor does not make an emotional support animal registered.
Ive had an ESA for 3 years and Ive never paid for a letter. I was told fake ESAs or people who have gotten scammed pay for the it online. Just something to look out for.
That's so awesome. Where do you live? I've moved to three different cities in the last three years, and each therapist of mine charged $100 for the ESA "prescription" letter in person each year. I have definitely seen the online scam though!
That’s so weird. I’m not sure what’s happening but it was also the same case for one of my friends who lives near me who also paid $100 to her therapist. But I appreciate you giving me information! I’ll try to ask around and see what the deal is.
Hey thanks for the information. I was curious I just applied for ESA on certapet and she emailed me and told me that after she reviews me we will need to talk on the phone and send me a letter I am trying to fly with American Airlines and they have a certain form that my therapist need to write for me. Do I need to ask her for that ?? It's my first time and I'm so nervous.
Hey there! So there is a newly updated form: www.aa.com/content/images/travel-info/special-assistance/service-and-emotional-support-animals/en_US/esan-emotional-and-psychiatric-service-animal-document-packet.pdf I would print that out and have your therapist fill out the designated medical form parts.
Your the reason service dogs get distracted, and psychiatric service dogs have to show some sort of "registry" to take our service animals on the plane. I hope you know they no longer allow esa cause of it.
Selfish. Did you ever stop to think that many people (one in 20) have a crippling fear of dogs? Many more are uncomfortable around dogs. About 15% of the population is allergic to dogs. What makes your comfort more important than theirs? Take an Ativan!
Defenders of Humans And The Natural World lol @ your profile picture. I always get a window seat and the middle seat and our dog sits on the window seat so he is not near anyone else and he also doesn’t interact with anyone.
If you and Mike are a couple, why don't you rely on one another for emotional support? That's what couples do. It cannot be good for any pet to go through the stress of the bustle of an airport, taking off, flying, and landing. Your dog is your child. It depends on you, not the other way around!
Edmund Thoroughgood we make sure the airport and plane is a positive experience for Dexter. He actually loves going to the airport/ plane. If he was very stressed out, we wouldn’t put Dexter through that. I agree he is like our child. While yes I support mike, studies have found that emotional support animals help to lower blood pressure, decrease respiration rates, and improve the ability to cope with pain. I’d rather Mike use all the tools at his disposal to feel ok, if that makes sense.

@@DayWithPhae I have a ESA
What a cute pup! What type of dog is Dexter? Is he mixed?
Chrissy Bear thanks so much! We aren’t 100% sure. We want to do a DNA test in the future for fun. But our best guess is a terrier chihuahua mix!

Hi! Thank you for the info :) Did you have to have him wear a special harness or ID or anything?
Hi Laura! No problem :). He wore his normal harness and ID. I made sure he had his rabies tag on him as well! Hope that helps.
There is no id for service animals or emotional support animals.
He's so cute! I love him.

now January 2021 American Airlines does not accept ESA anymore...very sad
Not sad, they don't perform tasks
