When Milburn Stone signed his contract to play Doc, he was business savvy enough to include a clause that he receive residuals. That was 65 years ago. Gunsmoke runs daily on different networks, and has for the nearly 50 years since it stopped production. I wonder how much his estate (and thus his heirs) continue to receive as a result of Stone's keen business acumen.
Everything now is garbage tv. I watch old westerns like Gunsmoke, Tales of Wells Fargo, The Virginian, Bonanza, etc. We’re in the reality TV era and all I can say is reality “celebrities” are classless, greedy garbage pigs.
It sounded more like the 'scene' was removed from the show, not the show itself. As a kid in the fifties and sixties, I remember gathering around the television with the 'entire' family. My grandpa and grandma, mom and dad, and four little kids. We grew up with Gunsmoke. When my Dad was in his last years, he watched reruns of Gunsmoke everyday. My sister who is our brothers care giver bought the DVDs and watches Gunsmoke with our brother. When I visit, I watch them, too. My son has been watching Gunsmoke most of his life, but also watches his own DVDs. And his two young daughters watch with him. Our cousins tell us they are all Gunsmoke Fans, from elder to child. Our friends tell us the same thing. Gunsmoke is a family tradition.
In the 1950s my family lived in a remote location in Idaho and couldn't receive TV. Our family listened to radio shows like Gunsmoke, Rin-Tin-Tin, and The Lone Ranger in the evenings. During the 1960s we finally bought our first black & white TV, and I could watch Gunsmoke.
My Aunt and Uncle and their 2 daughters and youngest son, Chuckie, would gather around the TV and have their dinner in the living room on the night Gunsmoke aired. My Aunt would hand out the plates of food and everyone would settle in. Chuckie was 12 years old on this particular night. Anyone who knew Chuckie felt that he was someone with just a little more specialness about him than most people. He had an old-soul quality about him and was very sweet, helpful, and extremely intelligent for a child his age. Well, just as Chuckie's mom handed him his plate, food flew everywhere. Sweet Chuckie had suffered an undiagnosed brain aneurysm and died on the spot. The family was never the same and Gunsmoke, of course, was never watched in their home again. The memory was too painful. I'm just writing this in his memory and to remind us all that we never know what the next second will hold. Tell everyone you love that you love them. Tell them and show them again and again, repetitively, over and over.
Several times my wife told me how she and her brothers would go shopping on Saturday with their parents and permitted a large bag of potato chips. That evening they would settle down with the chips and Gun Smoke. She has been gone 24 years, but I have the memory of a happy moment in her life.

Gunsmoke wasn't taken off the air because of any particular scene. CBS wanted to cancel it after 10 years, but because of audience backlash, they continued it for another 10 years! Gun smoke was a great show and John Wayne was right to recommend James Arness for the role. He was absolutely perfect in it. The best episodes were the earliest seasons with Dennis Weaver as Chester. Anyone from Kansas or it's border states can tell you, the area around Dodge City does not have high hills or low mountains and no alpine-like landscape, large Cacti or desert boulders as seen in the TV Show! Basically today only vast number of cattle feedlots can be seen around Dodge.

@@frankpienkosky5688 True, but Gunsmoke was just a TV western and Kitty Russel was the owner of The Longbranch, which had rooms upstairs and women "employees." The Longbranch was not a real saloon but a low key brothel which was underplayed! It seemed more like a Cheers where Kitty, Matt, Doc, Chester, Festus, Newly, Quint, Sam, and others met to shoot the breeze!
The stigma that Dennis Weaver's role as Chester had on his acting career was somewhat dissipated when he was cast in the leading role in the TV-movie series "McCloud". Sam McCloud was probably the best role that Dennis Weaver played.
Life magazine (IIRC) did an anniversary story on Gunsmoke's 20th season, in which the antagonist of the opening scene was Strange, the bar tender, who was an actual quick draw artist and actually out drew Matt in every filming. As to the popularity of Gunsmoke, the Dodge City museum had to create a special scene dedicated to Matt Dillon-- who, they had to tell viewers-- had never been a Marshal in Dodge City.
Life magazine was wrong. The opening gunfight of the show was Dillon against a man named Arvo Ojala. Ojala was a Hollywood technical advisor with regards to the quick draw with a revolver.
I just started watching Gunsmoke a few months ago , unbelievable! This show is definitely a mans show. Matt Dillon is the kind of man I grew up with. James Arness plays it perfect. He doesnt look for trouble, but takes care of it when it arises . These sissy boys in todays society would not understand how to be this type of man. I miss the era I grew up in. Go to 10:53 and miss all the BS - go straight to the point.
Thank You!!!!!
I LOVE WATCHING GUNSMOKE EVEN THOUGH GUNSMOKE WAS MADE BEFORE I WAS BORN I BELIEVE GUNSMOKE WAS SUCCESSFUL DA WHOLE 20YRS ON AIR
I love Gunsmoke..my husband and I watch it every night..the only part of the show that bothers me is the relationship between Matt and Kitty...they have real chemistry...yet never show much affection for each other..the way they look at each other is striking....but they have only hugged in a few scenes..but never kissed or married ( on film )
Gunsmoke left TV after miss Kitty left filming. The ratings dropped like a rock. Get the facts straight.
.. m m
I watch it everyday 2023
I remembered Amanda Blake quit after the bartender died. She was so upset she couldn't do her scenes since they had been in almost every scene together for years. At least that's the way I remembered it! 🤔

You are correct! They were very close and she was distraught by his death.
no women allowed in real saloons...
I read Amanda died of aids have you heard this
The stigma that Dennis Weaver's role as Chester had on his acting career was somewhat dissipated when he was cast in the leading role in the TV-movie series "McCloud". Sam McCloud was probably the best role that Dennis Weaver played.
Boy I don't McCloud as a role that showed his ability? It was a good show BUT his role in DUEL show what he was capable of doing!
The Chicken Hawk Wayne, was too busy pulling strings to dodge the draft.
Matt's horse was the same one used by Ben Cartright on Bonanza.

Buck!
People reswpected and loved their country and had respect. If you didnt , you would get smacked in the mouth. These things now days would fold up and cry.
Sissy boys? That's ironic given the obvious crush you have on James Arness.

They wouldn't last five minutes back then
Not even a look at the scene? what a rip off
One of my fav shows
Ratings dropped, and that was the real reason it was cancelled. It began to be lackluster. However, i continue to watch it on MeTv
I like the fact that the show became socially concious in the late 60's and 70's
I wish gunsmoke was still on TV
It is, as reruns.
Channel 304 TV Land
I am a fan I still watch daily over and over it’s one of the best tv shows every made. So rideable to real life
Lol. Controversial scene……took to the end to learn that.
Gun smoke was better then any other show
thanks for sharing
the scene is mentioned finally at 11:00 to 11:10 at the end of the video. You are welcome
Go to 11:00 if you want to
Know why they took it off the air
Rubbish! Go to the 11:00 mark to find out why and they don't even show the scene! Rubbish!
👆🎣
In a lot of episodes, Matt was out of town until the last five or ten minutes of the show.
Disappointing, can we actually see the scene that led to the show going off air???
