- In this week's video, I demonstrate ad chat about how I make forge welded chain.
First off, if you aren't familiar with forge welding or are a bit rusty, have a look at my scarf welding video before watching this one as I've avoided talking about the principles of welding in this one in order to save time.
This may be useful for ornamental chain - which is what I use it for - as well as industrial heritage restoration work (and demonstrations). Any questions, please feel free to ask in the comments.
Well done . Straight forward video not a bunch of fluff. Thank you.
As a vicar, I take offence at your remark, ill have you know when I am in a brothel I am gentle and considerate. :) thank you so much for all your videos. Clear, concise and invaluable to beginners like me.
@White Marlin me too
🤣😂🤣😂
"drop your work piece, swear a bit..." Sounds like the exact process I forge with
"Vicar in a brothel", Love your humour please keep them coming. Great vids by the way.
Thanks Rowan. Very helpful video about how to go about making a chain.
+Colin Cofield No worries :)
great videos , and great to watch im hoping to set up my own small forge and your videos certainly help. great skills.
hi a wonderful chain fantastic workmanship well done
I love that direction.. "Drop your lit piece ..... Swear a bit". That is a very accurate description of blacksmithing. No matter how many tongs you have and for what sizes... Pieces end up in the floor and we always beg God He sends the item and the whole situation and our career choice straight to hell OR we jump to the uncomfortable remark of "fuck me"
Anther great video. I love the dry humour, please keep it up ;)
+berrieds I'll do my best :)
Awesome videos cheers mate
Great commentary, really made the video for me :)
+Austin Derry Cheers mate :) I do try. Helps if I'm not shattered, lol, otherwise I just get cynical rather than humorous.
That's the first thing I want to make is a chain thanks for the video
Its comments like "A vicar in a brothel" that made me love this channel. I wish you the best, and hope that you return to making videos at some point. I've learned a lot from your videos and just as soon as the weather cooperates, I hope to put some of your lessons to practice.
Another great video. I too curse at my work when it falls. It laughs at me when I struggle to grab it with the wrong set of tongs!
+Rick Nowlin So far I've managed to melt the sole of my shoes because I dropped my work.
+Rick Nowlin I should really make the correct tongs for chain.
+Colin Cofield Always wear leather shoes! I wore old trainers when I first started as a hobby and one dropped a small piece of metal whch I was chiselling off. Well it melted through my shoes and into my foot. I had no bosh to drop my foot in so I had to unlace my shoe and kick it off with a hot piece of metal and melted nylon slowly burning away at me. Never again!
RowanTaylor Will do, I sometimes get lazy and start forging, bad habit I know.
Wow good work 😍👍👍🙋
I forgot to drop it and swear a bit.. do you think it'll still hold together?
I miss your videos sir! I hope you make a comeback sometime soon!
Rowan, why do you hit this scarf weld three times around the corner of the anvil? I do not recall other than this was how you were taught as a reason. If it is beneficial, why not set up the scarf weld from your other video in this manner? Love the video and knowledge you express in these. Best tutorial I have seen yet! Keep it up sir. 👍
interesting!
Very instructional video. I have been looking and having a hard time finding anything describing or showing a way to make wire metal in a similar fashion. I am curious how hystorically accurate chain mail was created from scratch.
The answer is very slowly, over the course of many months
I would love to find one of those chain makers hardy tool, got any leads? Nice video!!! Thanks
I have only ever seen videos of smiths forging from 3 to 6 links. I've often wondered how smiths handled this job when they were making long chains. It seems like the weight alone would make the job very difficult--not to mention the chain being in the way both in the fire and on the anvil.
Well, the length of the chain eventually would just spill onto the floor. The weight to contend with working would eventually just be the length of the chain coming from the pile on the floor to the anvil. If you had a lowish anvil, it would probably only be like 20 or 30 pounds max you had to actually hold off the floor.
Any chance you could show how you forge your small anchor thanks
You make that look easy i wager there'd be a bit more swearing if i was to give it a go
+thornwarbler Have a go with some scrap - I find chain making quite therapeutic. Obviously you might not if it is your first go!
great video the chain looks great! How heavy is the anvil next to the red one?
+Hot Iron Art I don't know for sure as it has no markings but I would say around two or three hundredweight

Can you use a very hot burning wood stove as a forge as long as I have a lot of coals? Would like to give it a try. Thanks!
Jordan/Shyadow i halve done it a few times however it does take a lot longer to get iny thing done but it works :)
Alternatives to the heel of an anvil for scarves? I have a double horn anvil without a shelf.
The step should work fine. You can just use the normal edge too, but be careful about how you 2 scarves line up for the weld.
How long would it take to forge a 10ft chain do you reckon?
How to forge a small chain? Thanks
not to sound stupid but can you use this to make chain mail
FLT
wouldn't it be easier to attach one link at a time?
soundfxmaster not when you are attaching it to a 30 foot length. much easier to do them in threes as it is less messing around.
RowanTaylor interesting, thanks for the reply! hey I texted you on Facebook messenger asking about a custom piece would you mind texting me on there?
soundfxmaster just going through my messages now. only been back from work for an hour. emails first, then etsy messages, then Facebook messages
RowanTaylor absolutely, thank you very much I'll text you soon I suppose
Haha vicar in a brothel
(5:40) - And how exactly do vicars in brothels *_"go at it" ?_*
I find this quite an odd analogy because any random vicar would be bound to *_"go at it"_* in a way completely different to the previous vicar.
I mean, is the vicar married ?
Is he happily married ?
Is he unhappily married ?
You see ?
Two married vicars.
Two completely different scenarios, situations and hence outcomes.
Sorry Rowan but your analogy makes no sense at all.
In short, it fails.
Sorry.
(Not really)
