LYRICS:
When I grew up
I had big city dreams
I wondered if the Bible was wrong
What the hell were they teaching me?
I was lost in thought
And I could not hide it
But the sun - it kept on rising
So, I played along
But now that you’re gone
And I write down this song
I don’t believe
This is how it’s meant to be
The church bells they ring
You can hear the mourners sing
They still believe
This is how it’s meant to be
The wheels touch down
All I can see is your face
Amidst the noise of those lights
The last thing on my mind was my faith
And then the morning came
And the sun started rising
But I was missing my friend
So, how do I carry on?
Cause now that you’re gone
And I write down this song
I don’t believe
This is how it’s meant to be
The church bells they ring
You can hear the mourners sing
They still believe
This is how it’s meant to be
Like a mother bird calling out for its young
I will sing it loud with all the might in my lungs
Cause now that you’re gone
And I write down this song
I don’t believe
This is how it’s meant to be
The church bells they ring
You can hear the mourners sing
They still believe
This is how it’s meant to be

Unlike any other musician, Dallas has been able to consistently access an otherwise impenetrable core of emotions with graceful precision. What a profound artistic gift.

Legit cry whenever I hear this song in particular....I've lost so many friends since I moved here to oregon.... his pain is real and you can FEEL it when he sings. ❤️
@@kmorehouse89 yes, you certainly can feel his grief. Sorry to learn about your losses Kevin.
Hey, Dallas. This music came out the day my dad died. It helped me a whole lot, like your songs helped me through life. Thank you.

This song is for my Aunt Uncle’s and my twin brother who isn’t with us. Thank you city and colour!!
15 years later and this man still speaks to my soul.
Same, same👏🏾👏🏾
I know right his Music just hits you so hard… so relatable… like he’s walked in your shoes and experienced exactly what you’ve been going through but had the intelligence to write it down and create gold… with everything he releases
That line "I was missing my friend" hits so hard
Very hard
that one has gotten me many times
Same. If you watch the live version it hits even harder. 😢
This is about him loosing a friend. 😢

City and Colour helped me through the darkest days of my life. Helped me make it through years of depression from a decade long abusive, toxic relationship. They continue to help me and I will forever be grateful to them. This song is absolutely incredible and so heartfelt. Their music just has a way of speaking to and soothing your soul. Thank you CandC 🖤
Hope u have better days ahead
Bro git outta here with this sob story. Nobody on the internet actually cares.

I just want to comment on this and say that I cannot wait to hear some more of the soundtrack to my life. My fiance had passed away a few years back but when I first met him I had asked him one question like I asked every person that I meet the first time I asked what is your favorite song because people's favorite songs can say a lot about them. Well he had told me that his favorite song was I'm coming home from City And Color. That was the first time I heard of this band it was definitely not the last time I listened to their music. This had to be about 2014 or so. Now ever since then every song that I've heard and every album that has come up since has been right alongside the soundtrack of my life. My fiance lost his battle to drugs in 2019 I lost everything that I had ever loved and everything I ever had my home my car everything I even lost my hair but somehow I found the way to keep going. His name was Sean he was an artist he was also a singer and a guitar player in a local band that he started when he was in high school he was 42 years old when he passed and he introduced me to a great band now he had been listening to sitting in color since before when they was actually Alexis on fire and got me listening to some of that music also and I can't believe what an amazing voice this man has and what beautiful music that I had been lucky enough to getting the chance to see who they were. I can't wait to hear the the new Soundtrack to My Life it's been a long time coming thank you for being such a beautiful voice in this evil world your music will forever be close to my heart seeing it as though all the music has lined up to my life since the day I met the man that I lost thank you
Hey I really hope ur doing ok life can just suck no matter what u do about it I’ve struggled with drugs since I was 14 I’m 33 sober going on 3 years thanks to methadone and my family some people are against it but it saved my life I just wanted comment nd say thank u for sharing ur story nd Sean story as well this band has also helped me mentally through 9 years In prison nd sobriety I just hope ur feeling ok sending u some amazing vibes from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 thank u again for sharing it helps other people share I think
Ur amazing
Sorry to hear about your loss, Jennifer. My girlfriend Katie died in 2020 at the age of 27. We were both City and Colour fans, and the last concert we went to together was his Toronto show in November 2019. His music brings up a mixture of emotions for me, but when I heard this song, it sounded so familiar, like I was listening to it with her. Thanks for sharing your story, from someone who understands what loss and grief feels like.
Comin’ Home is so important to me. Wishing you peace and happiness

I met Dallas Green outside a venue in Tulsa OK after seeing him and Marlon Williams. My brother and I had been listening to him since Alexisonfire days, so we were pretty starstruck. Before we ever got to talk to him, he stood there and talked to this girl who loved him even more than we did for what must have been 30 minutes. Afterward he still came over to us and talked to us for another 10 minutes, signed some stuff and took some pictures. I've never seen an artist devote that kind of time to random fans he'd never known previously. I was already a big fan, but became a life-long one that night. Bless you Dallas, love your work.
His music always walks you down a story or a hallway of emotions. This song is no different. Brilliant.
Well said, so true.

My Dad died 12-30-23 and Every time I play this song i cry, Great song.
Sorry for your loss
Just an awesome tune.
As a 65 year old man, I heard this song for the first time on Spotify flying back home to South Carolina. I’m not an overly emotional person, but the tears started streaming down my face in mid-flight…such a powerful song!
You have heart and a heart… from a 69yo man
Dallas Green, in my opinion, rivals the greatest lyricist of any generations. His music is bright and vibrant, yet poignant and emotional. You simply cannot listen to an album from City and Color. You have to live it. It defines the moment…it shapes the contours of your world. It makes you believe that it’s how its meant to be….
WOW. That was beautifully written.
I love what you said. You have to live through a City and Color album. I've kept Dallas close these past ten years!
Couldn’t agree more!
Someone shared this song with me tonight. I lost my best friend of 26 years back in 2009... These lyrics speak what I feel in my soul. Thank you for writing it and helping others dealing with loss...

I love your music. I wish I could see you before I go.
When you think Dallas has written the best song you've ever heard, he keeps writing. Absolutely beautiful.
This is wholeheartedly the greatest tribute song I have ever heard. RIP Karl Bareham
Oh no ! My heart !! ❤️🩹❤️🩹
Hi Stormy
Dallas is out here looking like the wisest man on earth and I'm here for it
I've been a fan of City and Colour since college and Dallas Green's music has gotten me through some hard times.
Thank you for your years of music, Mr Green!
This. All. Of. This.
Big ditto
Looks like everytime i am about to touch bottom, he drop something ❤
Same…2007 was a crazy year. I was an alexisonfire well before but then this music just hit that year.
@@cgunz same, what a band
This is the first album of Dallas’s that my brother won’t have been alive to hear- he introduced me to him back when Sometimes was his only solo record. I already know it’s gonna be devastating and beautiful and cathartic.
Sending hugs your way my friend.
I was lucky enough to have gotten to work on this project as the Playback Operator, even though I was there it still is just so much better than I could have ever imagined. I love the emotions that clearly went into this song, and Michael as well as Jake Captured it so well in gorgeous Kodak Super 16mm FILM!!! Congratulations to EVERYONE else on crew who helped make this video come to life. Michael, Jake, Morgan, Melanie, Danielle, Fred, Spencer, Kevin, Faylen, Jonathan, Bryan, Reggie, Nico, Mads, Doc, Dave, Joe, Luke, Jordan, Isabella!!! Your hard work all shone through!
So lucky!
I wish he would go back to an older tone that he used during Simple Songs and Sometimes for a few songs though.
thank you
Thank you for your part!
Thank you for your contribution ❤
My dad just passed away then this song came out . Thank you for this you are amazing ! I’ll forever be a fan ❤️

Never heard of this group. You Tube did it's algorithm thing. I can't stop listening to this song. I melt! Thank you City & Colour.
You are in for a WHIRLWIND. The entire catalouge is incredible.
By the way, City and Colour is the artistic name of Dallas Green (the city and the color), a singer and guitar player from the band Alexisonfire. Mostly acoustic stuff, pretty amazing.
@@viniwittke Thank you for that. I really appreciate it.
@@Plums72 Thank you.
O gosh how do we begin. Um. Let's just say you stumbled upon someone that every single song they create is amazing. All his early work is breathtakingly
Dallas has a voice that angels would be jealous of.
Gord Downey once said almost the exact same.
This song was phenomenal live. First time I heard it too. That first strut of the guitar hit home
This is one of those songs for me that just deserves to be played at max volume. It's so beautiful and sad and touches my soul in a way i can't explain
The way to heaven is the Word of God, the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, Jesus Christ
I don't believe this is how it's meant to be. But it's how it is so it must be.
That is the perfect guitar tone, the perfect harmonies, the perfect song. slays.
This album got me through my deployment. Thanks Dallas
Just seen these guys in Chesterfield last night and I gotta say, they fuckin killed it! Not my typical style as I'm a metalhead at heart but this music really speaks to me. If music has detail, talent, and most importantly soul, I'll like it and these guys for sure have it all.
This song hits every single emotion. I lost my sister going on three years ago and we both (and the rest of my sisters) absolutely ADORE everything Dallas green.... its like you wrote this specifically for my life and I just can't get enough.
Thank you for being you. Truly. You have saved me far more times then anyone will ever know. Your music is the only therapy that helps me. ❤️
So sorry for your loss, Stephanie. :(
@Marcio Novelli thank you so much but she is no longer suffering. 32 is far too young to pass away but it is much more comforting knowing that she is no longer a slave to addiction 🙏👌🤞❤️

Proud to be canadian❤ when i hear dallas sing. My brother is getting married and this was always his favorite artist. He loved to play his songs on his acoustic guitar. And I'm thinking of singing a song by city and colour for him is wife at their wedding . Any suggestions?
Just heard this live. Achievement: unlocked.
This song came out in the same week I lost one of my baby guinea pigs, and in a tragic way. I was kinda lost and it was really hard to accept the whole situation in which he passed away. So this song came along and I felt that "but I was missing my friend, so how do I carry on?" and "I don't believe this is how was meant to be" were... Meant to be. Thank you Dallas for writing many songs that I feel like resume some times of my life, they help me in my anxiety and also my anguish.
I will miss her forever.
Dallas it’s been the greatest 2 decades witnessing your growth. As a person and an artist. Thank you for your transparency and your passion you share with us. I look forward to many decades ahead of your art.

I lost my beautiful loving wife 2 weeks ago and this song was sent to me to help with healing. It hits the spot perfectly. Lovely to reconnect with C&C music nearly 20 years later, once again connecting with those stronger emotions of life as I move through it.

It's my friend's birthday today. Mehn, I never really thought about how weird it is to wish someone HBD when they're dead until the passing of my friend to cancer earlier this year. He was in his early 40's, married less than 5yrs with 2 daughters under 4yrs old. I can't wish him HBD cuz ain't nothing happy about it to me. I heard this song a few days after his passing and the lyrics really spoke to me and expressed a lot of what I was feeling at the time and still do. Especially the line@2:12. Never even heard of the band, 'City and Colour' before but I'm glad I came across this song when I did! Thank you guys for writing this song, it's much appreciated! ❤😢🙏

Dallas...the bible may not be right, but you have the voice of an angel.
I lost one of my best friends, this past September. This song has hit me so hard but it’s helped me so much. I miss him so damn much…
This is a band that doesn’t get enough recognition, his voice, OMG! ❤❤❤
Don't normally do this, but my Nana passed the day this came out. Everyone's favorite person! Amazing to everyone.
Well that was stunning
So ready for this 💙💚
I believe that all great artists like Dallas are the kind that immerse themselves into stories that all of us can relate to in some sort of way. Dallas is great at telling us his own story in such a meaningful and lyrical as well as musical sense that connects us and brings us together in our communal grief. It's poignant and we all need a song sometimes that we can rely on to help us through those dark, dark days
This couldn’t have came at a better time
First heard this when I was on a train as the sun was rising. It reminded me of how much I miss my friend who passed away almost 3 years ago now. Last time I saw this friend, we saw C&C live in 2019. Now anytime I hear C&C I get sad 😞

My best friend died a year ago. Seeing this band right afterwards was one of the hardest things. I felt embarrassed until I looked around to glassy eyes everywhere. ❤❤❤

This song hits me on such a personal level. Dallas, thank you for turning your grief into art for all of us to help cope with our losses. Rest in Peace Karl Bareham.
Precious! 10 month after hearing it first time, I'm back to say this song conforted me when my father passed away last august 2023.

Hi Dana
❤ Meant To Be...the whole album, was meant to be. So good.
I never heard of this band before. Wow, me really likes!
The best album
This song truly overwhelms me with emotion at times. Absolutely breathtaking track. The bar is always incredibly high for Dallas and I keep wondering when we’ll see that typical drop in quality as an artist ages but it never happens. Absolutely astounding.

My father passed , I live alone. Dallas was on 24/7. Whether city in colour, or alexisonfire, dark thoughs, sad, happy, joyfull, emotionals I never thought I had.. thankfully for the 46 years I got to spend with him.
I've listened to this so many times that it's the soundtrack of my dreams at night. It's beautifully written from sorrow but shows light for any moment in time. Dallas this song is such an amazing work of art
Wow. Nice. Real Nice. Thanks for This Wonderful Upload. Regards Frank
Oh, this song got my heart-strings. Definitely needed a good cry. Been holding it in for too, long. Lost a lot of family, and good friends the last couple of years, and this song helped me realize, its time to move on and live in their memory. To all who have lost a loved one, we must live for them.
This is ridiculously good... goosebumps the whole song.. Another Canadian artist unfortunately bound by the 49th parallel.
This song is soul, means so much.
See you in Melbourne City and Colour 🙌🏻
This is hitting the core of my heart ♥ I'm so in love with my husband.
Wow wow wow I'm a prodigy of the 70s but um I'm past blown with the entire band
A few weeks ago I went to my first City and Colour show. I had a huge expectation and the concert was even more amazing than I thought it would be. Meant to be was the first song and all I could think was my friend who passed away two years ago. Dallas, thank you for your music, it means the world to me and to many others.
