    I'm glad how three years later I'm totally able to notice some grammar mistakes during this video. Still, I believe that those mistakes don't prevent anyone to understand the main message, and the fact that I have been able to "detect" them on my own proves my point: if we keep up, there's no other possible result but to improve. 😊

    06:18 "Language is just like a puzzle. If you don't put the right pieces in the right places, they are not going to fit in. But how do you solve a puzzle? Trying, making mistakes, trying again, recalling the previous errors, looking for patterns and using the logic to see what are ideal new pieces to put [in] next."
    That's a great analogy! :)

    • @RafaelLeon
      @RafaelLeon  6 лет назад +2

      Thank you! I like to use analogies because I think it makes easier to understand my messages. And because this way we can identify with something common in our daily lives. I'm glad you liked it. :)

    It took me about a year to become extremely fluent in English, well... lemme break it in to you: 5 hours a day over 6 months provided me the skills to understand every single word/idiom I'd come across, then more 6 moths to become an expert at speaking it naturally practicing it for about 3 daily hours and that's it, I got a unique accent, excellent pronunciation and pleasure of being always confused as a native speaker, but then what? I thought to myself; Why stop here if I've achieved my main goal in such a short amount of time? Well I took on another challenge, or as some call "A language" and it was German, later on Russian and then Japanese, Chinese, Korean, French und so wieder (and so on, as they say it in German), to cut a long story short, don't get stuck with just one language, skill/whatever you're good at when you've already Mastered it but instead be wise and take advantage of that motivation while you still have it and move on.

    • @RafaelLeon
      @RafaelLeon  6 лет назад +2

      Wow! Truly impressive. Congrats on your achievements! You're certainly an example of determination and success! For me, it took me more time to become at my current level but I think everybody has their own time to achieve their goals (especially for people with a very busy schedule). Anyway, your story inspired me to keep studying other languages as well. I've been thinking about it and this pushes me to give it a try! Thanks!

      Alan Carlin No, you can't come across all the expressions, words, idioms, etc. in 6 months, let alone only 5 hours a day.....

    • @roucoupse
      @roucoupse 6 лет назад

      Alan Carlin I am not wasting my time either and I can tell you I have been learning new vocabulary every day for almost 4 years. You can't know everything in 6 months even if you try very hard, that's purely impossible. Watching an English movie or an English podcast takes time, reading an English book too. 6 months...

      Muito obrigado, irmão! Fico feliz que tenha gostado do vídeo e que tenha te ajudado a manter a motivação. Ela é fundamental pra que a gente continue seguindo no caminho da fluência. Com certeza eu devo trazer vídeos como o que você pediu muito em breve!!! Mas se eu puder já te adiantar uma dica, seria a seguinte: tenha em mente que o aprendizado de uma língua não é exatamente uma receita de bolo. Não é só seguir a receita do fulano e "boom", resultados garantidos. Os métodos e técnicas definitivamente estão aí para ajudar e farão toda a diferença (e é por isso que pretendo compartilhar aqui muito em breve), mas depende muito mais do seu uso real da língua no cotidiano do que de qualquer outra coisa. É aquilo: cada tem sua própria história. Você não tem como vivenciar as conversas e interações que eu tive na língua ao longo dos anos, mas pode, sim, ter as suas próprias conversas e interações que serão FUNDAMENTAIS para o seu aprendizado. E eu estou aqui para ajudar você a se encontrar durante esse trajeto!
      Tamo junto! 👊

      Valeu demais e tamo junto!

    I don't see any prize for learning. When I feel it interesting, I learn. When I feel it bored, I give up. But after time I start again. Well, I think that it is better to learn sometimes then never.

    • @RafaelLeon
      @RafaelLeon  6 лет назад +2

      Interesting. I think this depends on what are your goals with language learning. For some people, they have a reason to learn because it could improve their lives, open doors, help them to get a better job, traveling purposes... Or even moving abroad. They don't get to give up or postpone their plans just because they "don't feel like studying". This video was made to help them get back on track. But if you're learning just for fun or as a pastime because you enjoy learning languages, I think there is no problem with "giving up" whenever you get bored.

      Muito obrigado pelo seu comentário, Kaizen. Isso me motiva muito a continuar produzindo vídeos assim e ajudar as pessoas a conseguirem alcançar seus objetivos! Fico muito feliz em ler que você tentará novamente e, principalmente, na CONFIANÇA de que, SIM, VOCÊ VAI CONSEGUIR! Isso faz TODA diferença na hora do aprendizado.
      E para responder sua pergunta, isso varia muito. Já tive dias muito ocupados em que não passava mais de 10 minutos fazendo alguma lição no Duolingo. Enquanto outros dias passava horas e horas consumindo muito conteúdo em inglês. Já cheguei a fazer maratonas de séries na Netflix em inglês com legenda em inglês e foram cerca de 8 a 10 horas de contato DIRETO com a língua. A questão é: temos que saber variar métodos de ESTUDO (questões que envolvem gramática, pronúncia, regras etc.) com DIVERTIMENTO (consumo de conteúdo REAL da língua. Uso PRÁTICO e VERDADEIRO, não apenas teórico). Espero que isso te ajude a ter uma luz do caminho que você pode seguir. :)

    Help me I've been using duo my native language is Spanish I learned English at a intermediate high level and started with, since some weeks with French German Italian Portuguese Dutch Polish Russian Korean Romanian and all the courses for English speakers I'm learning them through English to keep in contact with and feel a lot of frustration it seems that I want to learn them all in only one day idk if it's good or bad because I force myself I've learned English in two months by watching videos on RUclips reading articles in English and it works but I studied non stop 12 hours a day it was exhausting but it was well worth it and idk if it's good or not because believe me I didn't want to pass through all of that I sacrificed a lot it was the path real boring but now due to that I forced myself it's bearing fruits on me now I know that I'm still a long way off of fully mastering it but I happen that I'm way too desperate and I wanna learn something real fast but now I'm in dire straits why because how am I gonna do to learn 10 languages a day and to master them and not to forget, do I need to go over with them daily for life till I die, I struggle a lot with pronunciation and listening my listening sucks I'm a bit deaf and I think that that it's a barrier but anyway I just wanted to tell you that if what I'm doing is right and yeah I'm using duo just to form the base for every language and then I read a lot on those languages to see how far I can get. I hope ya answer

    • @RafaelLeon
      @RafaelLeon  6 лет назад +2

      Hey, Manuel. I am not a polyglot so I don't have any experience of learning multiple languages in a short period of time.
      And honestly I don't wanna discourage you but I think we should be realistic here. It's pretty hard to learn two languages at the same time without getting confused and mixing everything up. And it seems that you are trying to learn 10 languages at once, which is insane even if those languages are related/similar. This is extremely overwhelming and I don't recommend that you should try this. It's not surprising that the process was exhausting for you because you were pushing too hard on yourself. It is just too much information to process that fast. You may have got some pretty good results with English but, as you said, you still need to improve your skills. And this is because a language is not something that you can just "unpack" and get everything done at once. It doesn't matter how hard you study to learn fast because even people who moved abroad and immersed themselves 24/7 in the language they are trying to learn usually needed about 6 months (if not more) to get more comfortable to speak and communicate in that language.
      It's exactly like I said in the video: consider a language as a puzzle that you need to solve. But to solve this puzzle, you gotta have patience because there are literally thousands of pieces for you to fit in and they are all randomly distributed. If you try to solve 10 HUGE puzzles at once it is likely that you are not gonna get good results. You may solve partially some of them. And that's what usually happens with polyglots. They are fluent in 3, even 4 languages but the others they just know basic stuff to survive and being conversational.
      Somebody once told me: "If one wants to be everything will end up being nothing." If you really want to master a language and become fluent, you should focus on one language at a time. I don't know if you are rushing so much because you have some "deadline" to learn those languages. But if you really really really need to learn one of them "fast", focus on this one. Otherwise, you're likely to mix up all of them and you're not going to become proficient in any of them.

    • @manuel150294
      @manuel150294 6 лет назад

      Rafael Leon yes I know sometimes I wonder why to learn many languages if most people all over the world can speak English or have a simple conversation in English like Chinese Japanese Russians Germans Norwegians they know English but I don't know I love Portuguese Italian French Rumanian German Dutch Polish Danish Swedish and I was very curious to learn them I already finished German in duo but only the levels zero I'm missing 1, 2, 3, 4, I don't remember very well if there's 5 level the golden circle, and yes I think that I am just going to learn French and German to not get saturated, mmm I was wondering something about mmm I wish you can answer me, the question is what's most difficult to learn a language like German or math (geometry, algebra ,calculus), or those programming languages like c, c#, c++, java, php because I have zero knowledge about them and maybe I'd like to study something like that instead, you know to study an engineering and have a good job, because maybe languages won't get me so far and because I'm 23 years old and I'm old enough to learn several languages, and to be down to earth and study something useful like those sciences like physics, chemistry for example what's harder math, physics or to learn a language because I know that a language is tough tho, many words, expressions, grammar, conjugations, reading, listening, writing, speaking, memorizing and the other ones are like another way of thinking so which is harder a language or math?

    • @RafaelLeon
      @RafaelLeon  6 лет назад

      Sorry that it took me so long to answer you! I think there is no proper answer to your question because it really depends on the person. Some people can learn languages easier than others. They have a "natural talent" for that kind of thing. And other people can learn math, physics, chemistry or any other subject with more ease than languages. I think this is more related to your own capacity to learn those things. You gotta see for yourself what is more appropriate for you and what you can learn more easily. I've never tried to learn C#, Java, PHP or any one of those programming languages so I can't really tell you if it is easier or harder than regular languages. But you should choose based on two aspects: 1) what is going to be more useful for what I want to do with my life? 2) Which one gives me more motivation and happiness to spend my time trying to learn? I hope this can help you to make a decision!

      @manuel150294 6 лет назад

      Rafael Leon thanks I'm trying German and little by little I'm getting the hang of it and I think when I try calculus or programming they'd be a piece of cake because I consider languages more difficult due to the listening and speaking part

    Did you only study a half hour a day?

    • @RafaelLeon
      @RafaelLeon  6 лет назад +4

      At least. It's hard to define what I usually do as "studying" because I don't consider watching a TV show or joking around with native speakers as "study", you know? hahahaha But those "exercises" were really important for me to keep in touch with the language and get used to it. Sometimes I spend hours and hours making a video like this one, chatting with friends, watching videos on RUclips and we could consider all of this as "study". But as a regular study method (checking on grammar, doing some Duolingo exercises, Clozemaster and things like that I usually spend no more than 20 minutes. But yes, I do it every single day and I used to do it for 30/40 minutes - even 1 hour - back in the days I was just a beginner/intermediate student).

  • @roucoupse
    @roucoupse 6 лет назад +1

    In this video you say that you have been learning English for almost 4 years, whereas in a 1 or 2 month older video, you said you had started learning English 3 years ago. So, where is the mistake?

    • @RafaelLeon
      @RafaelLeon  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for asking. This happened because I divide my journey into two different moments. The first one (about 3 and a half years ago - maybe a little more) was when I decided to learn English and started to search for some sources and experienced my first attempts (but I failed because of lack of consistency and focus). Then I gave up and only a couple of months after that, I decided to try again (almost from scratch since I haven't had learned almost anything in my first attempt). This time, I discovered Duolingo and took my routine with English more seriously. So that's why sometimes I refer my journey as "almost four years ago" (considering the first attempt) and other times as "about three years ago" (the real strategy I've followed until I succeeded). I hope I could make things clear now. :)

    • @RafaelLeon
      @RafaelLeon  6 лет назад +1

      Writing and speaking are skills that must be developed through practice. What is probably happening is that you are spending most of your time learning English through reading and listening (this way those skills become easier for you). Maybe it's time for you to try a different approach and spend your time trying to write more and speak with natives. If you don't know anyone who might practice with you, try to talk to your phone and ask questions. I teach people how to do that in this video: ruclips.net/video/jEdyBglevuY/видео.html
