    Hi C Mastracci , those are some nice cars but not in my era. I do have about 30 waffle boxcars by Exact rail. The only problem I have had at lest one wheel set on about 75 % of them has fallen out. Could have been due to shipping issues bouncing and bumping. That was a good fix. I got some spacer's for wheel sets but there for H O . They do work on N scale you may need to trim a little off the edges. But you have done is a good fix. I saw yesterday’s video didn’t make a comment because it was late and I was tired had a long day. That was a good update on what you are doing and plans for the future. As you know I have a small layout. I got some good news. We’re in the process of buying a piece of property and going to build a new house. The only thing that I asked for is a train room. My wife said I could my train room. So in the future I’ll be building an expansion to my small layout. The only problem I see is how big of a room I’m going to get. Thanks for sharing. Have a good week. 😎😎 👍

      congrats on the future train room! i mean house. right, congrats on the train house LOL! Yes, the trucks on these Exact Rail cars were a little bent out of shape but i was able to fix them quickly off camera. I selected the three in the box that didn't have wheels laying in the bottom of the box. Out of the box of 12, i believe i grabbed the best three.

    Might be worth model railroaders keeping eye out for assorted washer sets in the dollar store, just in case

    BLMA trinity reefers had the exact same issue! I was also able to fix it with a Micro Trains spacers and it still looks perfect. I would definitely suggest going with widening the whole of the spacer though. Simply hold the spacers with one hand on the outside of the spacer and take an exacto knife and just turn the knife inside the spacer. it will slowly shave away the inside until it gets big enough to fit.

      you can absolutely do that as well. the amount i needed to take off was just too much for that and the tweezers weren't holding it well enough and i just didn't have the patience for reaming that little spacer out. mechanically drilling it was also less fruitful than just cutting it which took seconds.

    Thank you for sharing this info. A number of years ago I bought some of the Atlas version of these lovely cars and they never did run right (constant derailments). Your video inspired me to get off my butt and dig these cars out of my "crap to fix someday" box. In taking another look at them, the Atlas underframe has more of a wedge-shaped bolster as opposed to the Exactrail "pedestals". That said, it appears that the folks at Atlas had the same math tutor as the E-R folks (since the Atlas wheels also apparently foul on the underframe in curves). My guess is that the wheel flange diameter in the production trucks may be slightly bigger than the designers had originally intended. Fortunately, a Microtrains washer under each of the trucks seems to fix the problem. Jeez, it's like I just got two sweet looking reefers added to my layout for nothin'! Thanks! 😂

    I have done this in the past but i use a round file to make the hole in the spacier just big enough to fit. That way there is no gluing involved.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  2 месяца назад

      started that way - but the pieces were a pain to hold and the filing was taking too long - this was a quick-fix for something i'll never see again. just have to make sure the glue is fully dried so the truck doesn't stick. not that i did that, or anything, just saying... could totally happen.

    I used a dremel and gouged out a bit of the underbody were the wheels were rubbing,fixed it without raising the carbody

      i actually needed to raise my car bodies because the couplers sat low. it was a 2 for 1 fix. i really hate modifying the bodies if i can help it... that's just my preference but that works, too. sometimes, it's in the only fix. i'm trying to remember which one, but i had a car that i had to remove some of the center frame for it to run... can't remember which one it was now.

    How on earth did this pass quality control. These things aren’t $5. Only in our hobby would we fix a manufacturing defect and feel proud we achieved a good outcome.

      that's a good question. and i completely forgot about it when i bought them. yes, it's annoying, and no we shouldn't have to BUT i think the big thing is we want them - so we buy them and make them work because there's no other option. it's annoying but i hear scaletrains is releasing their own version now.... so i guess i'll have an unnecessary refer train on the layout, too... oh well.

    Maybe this is why i just got 6 of these for a insane price of $120 😮 did feel the wheels dragging a little when rolling by hand. Good advise! Odd question, at the end of your video, do you know the radius of that corner? Really like the way these looked going around it, and will keep it in mind when designing my next layout.

      so that's kato's super elevated track, i believe it's around 28" radius. they're great curves but you need the space for them. they have a smaller radius version too as an inner loop - i think it's around 22" maybe? i have nothing but problems with anything less than 11" - avoid 9 3/4" if you can.

    🤕 that looks like more work that just reaming out the MT spacer would be.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  2 месяца назад

      i tried reaming it and also drilling it out. the spacers are too small to really work with and i wasn't interested in spending a lot of time on this process. cutting it and quickly gluing it took seconds. and the glue is Gorilla Glue which sets quick. i think i had all three cars running in under 10 mins.

    Wouldn't be neater to just drill out the spacer a bit?

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  2 месяца назад

      you're not left with a whole lot of material and the few i drilled cracked anyway so this was faster. you could try it if you have the patience.
