- Sun Dolphin American 12 stability test
This video is a follow up to my first stability test but this time with the compact front floor instead of full casting deck. The stability is as to be expected from a small Jon boat, I demonstrate from many different angles how the boat reacts when you are jumping, swaying the boat side to side and walking from front to back.

Nice little boat. My cousin and I fished a twelve foot boat and won nine bass tournaments. Had a lot of fun in that molded-plastic boat. Good vid.
Dang, nine tournaments that’s pretty awesome. Yea this thing is really great for river fishing where I go it’s fairly easy to load and unload even with all of my DIY builds added to it. I was really surprised by how well these plastic Jon boats hold up. I do miss my old Sea Ark aluminum boat that Wes had you come up and get. I hope it has been serving you well. Thanks again!
I will be 80 in 10 days, so standing in any boat under 20 to 25 feet isn't very smart. I don't want to pay 30 to 40 thousand for a boat that will require a lot of maintenance. So I bought a Sun Dolphin and will put 2 swivel seats and a motorguide xi3 kayak trolling motor. Now I can get away from shore and fish in relative comfort. My experience is a lot of expensive accessories does not necessarily catch fish. It's your brain power that helps you catch fish.
Thanks for that free knowledge sir. I will always take advice from anybody who is 80 and fishes.
Experience with your balance is the great divider here; a lot of shoppers straight off the Walmart floor have no idea how to handle themselves, going by reviews for this boat.
I just finished my front and rear casting deck, they are carpeted with storage compartments, tackle, and ice chest/ live well. Now all I need is to get me an outboard and some pedestal seats. (Already have 30 lb thrust trolling motor) I also plan on rebuilding a trailer in the next few weeks that I will use for it. I was looking at buying a new fishing kayak or a used boat and this boat was way cheaper, with everything I’ve put in it so far it’s still cheaper than the other options and probably better. Once I buy an outboard it will be a little more expensive but for what you get I say it’s a great deal.
Logan, good to hear man, it sounds like you build it turning out great. Your making me jealous lol, I wish I had a trailer and outboard motor, but maybe in the future. Your right this boat even with tons of mods comes in at a way cheaper price point than other options like fishing kayaks. Keep it Blue Collar brother!
I owned a Sports -Pal Canoe it had foam along the outside made it very stable .
good video. i almost got this boat but end up grabbing a Aruba 10 kayak. the peddle and lifejacket were sold seperate, but its nice being out on the water fishing or out on adventures on the many lakes of cape breton. 40 pound boat ten ft long makes it easy to haul around.
Would you take 2 extra people on it? Im pretty heavy guy ( muscle side) 240 so that takes almost half of the weight capacity.
Another awesome video.
Dallas Texas showing support!
Could you do a stability review with you buddies or your family just to see how it is with more people.
Yea man that sounds like a great video idea, I do plan on getting out with my buddies soon so I will definitely point out the stability, thanks man!
Thank you for the great videos. Very informative.
Your an actual hero. This made me go buy this
I have a 6HP Tohatsu on mine but haven't taken it on the water yet. I also have it on a McClain trailer and plan to test it all in a couple of weeks. I plan to store the battery up front because of the weight of the outboard. Hopefully that will even the weight out a little. I think I'll probably put pour foam in the sides. It has block styrofoam in the seats but I hope to make kind of a boat collar, but from the inside. I also have the very same trolling motor and bought them all from Academy at the same time. Oh, I also poured foam in the bottom between the sub floor and the bottom. Probably overkill but want to make this a safe boat for 2 people with no scary moments. I'm also decking the front. I'll try and shoot video when I test it out. I mostly fish in a narrow river so figured this would work good after watching your videos.
Awesome to hear from you again Russell it looks like your boat is coming along just great. I like your idea of pouring foam in the flooring ribs. I may get a trailer in the future as well that’s the main reason I don’t run Maine fully decked out anymore just because it adds a lot of weight and loading it in a truck can get difficult. I bet your outboard motor takes this thing to a whole other level too an upgrade that I really want to do. Thanks again man for engaging!
Hey, just wondering did you take off the “american 12” stickers to put the registration numbers on?
Thank you where did you get the flooring please
How many pounds of crawfish can carry in that? Have you reviewed the Sun Dolphin pro 120? If so, how good is the live well?
Thanks for sharing. Your video is very helpful.
What are the pros and cons of having the trolling motor in the front of the Sun dolphin or and what are the pros and cons of having it in the back of the sun dolphin
The biggest pro for having it in the front is I believe it is easier to control and fish at the same time. The con for the front is that the front is down in the water more causing more drag and less speed.
Pro for having it on the back is that the front is not down in the water and the boat can mo e forward without as much drag with the water.
And the con is that for me it is hard to operate the trolling motor and fish on the back. I mainly fish by myself so using it on the front is my go to. Hope this helps man!
@@bluecollaroutdoors5556 thanks buddy awesome reply time I'm so excited I get motor tomorrow I couldn't sleep 😂keep up the good work dude I'll let you know how it goes
How much approximate weight is on the boat, including yourself?
Probably 250 pounds including me around 200lbs and gear and flooring inserts making up the rest.
Two full size adults pretty much take most of the weight capacity
My trolling motor comes in on Saturday yay
I got a a question I’ve had mine for some time and the plastic has gotten some what flimsy has your and if so how do you fix it?
That’s a great question man, so I’ve only had mine 2 years now and I haven’t noticed this with mine. I will say that on hot days where the boat is in direct sunlight it can feel as if the plastic gets a little flimsy, I’m guessing just like any other plastic it starts to heat up and get that feeling. But other than that mine hasn’t done it to the point I have been concerned. As far as a fix I’m not sure what to tell you exactly man!
@@bluecollaroutdoors5556 well I may be overlooking it but I do push that boat to the limits I bowfish off mine and use it a lot and guess it gets somewhat banged up loading and unloading out of my truck bed
@@sticknscalesbowfishing maybe so man, I will say that the plastic on mine does have several deformities almost like the plastic didn’t get molded exactly how it was supposed to. I know one of the sides on mine bows way out more than the other side. And underneath it isn’t flat it has a huge curved surface that isn’t even. So maybe the molding process has something to do with everything.
@ Outdoorsman Guy: Bare metal, dark colored bedliners, dark colored bed paint can contribute to heating during transport. Direct sunlight is the biggest culprit. Check the manufacturer's materials specs on the PVC. Most PVC has an upper temperature limit of 105 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. (approx 40 to 43 degrees celcius). The plastic becomes malleable at that temperature and that's when things get misshapen. If it cools while misshapen, then that can become a permanent warp. I don't think it can be fixed without a mould.
What size trolling motor is that?
I want to build mine up with some aluminum bracing and add a flat top to it. Add a live well and some storage underneath.
Where did you get the flooring for that? I want to do the same
Im buying one of these over a kayak, its like the same price and all i need is a small boat anyways. Something i can enjoy and comething i take my nieces with me out on when theyre old enough to go onto the lakes.
long shot.... will you be mounting any down riggers on the boat?
Probably not any time soon but I have been looking into a micro power pole, which would serve great on the boat as a solid anchor system.
@@bluecollaroutdoors5556 gotcha! ive been toying with the idea since there are many kokanee lakes in the western side of canada.
How does it handle wake
Ronnie, honestly I’ve never had it out in very rough wake, but I’m sure that just like any other smaller Jon boat it would be pretty rough.
Great video, thank you.
Can you paddle with this boat?
Yea man you can paddle this thing, please see my video on paddling this boat. ruclips.net/video/0LiaThrEjzk/видео.html
what trailer do you use with that?
I just put it in the bed of my truck
@@bluecollaroutdoors5556 do you think it could go on the top of an suv or sedan?
I put a 15hp mercury on mine... it's a jet boat now
Bought a Crestliner 1648 72 inch beam from a older guy that only used it a few times a year for less than one of those talk about a stable boat 21 inch transom also lose two piece boats get water logged if you don’t store them inside also something else to think about
The boat would be more stable with a motor on it, the weight helps counter balance
have the same boat love it for small lake and pounds
ty very nice vid
Great review, man thanks! This might be a weird question, but do you have a video of you testing with two people in the boat?
I need to add floors in mine. Those ribs are not fun!
I’m thinking about finally adding a front swivel seat to mine like yours. I like standing up most of the time but I would be nice on occasion to take a seat. Yea those ribs are bad, I like the way the pelican plastic Jon boat’s floor is better than the sun Dolphin, they should really change up the design.
what’s the name of the rib covers?
Easy fix add pieces of closed cell styrofoam and anti slip mats from a restaurant supply store Jon boats have the huge ribs also that kill your arches
All small Jon Boats are tippy just not wide enough I had a 5 foot wide 12 foot Carolina skiff that was Super stable
Nice
where can you buy this boat for $550.00 ?
I'm seeing this boat advertised for less than $100 on multiple sites. The cheapest being $64.30 US from a company in Indiana. Sounds too good to be true. If it's legit, then it would be bare bones boat and you'd have to order components separately.
$699.99 at tractor Supply
Im looking for something like this boat...im very careful of who i fish with...clumsy dont cut it
Just purchased one in uk second hand for £500.
Sweet, I hope you get to enjoy yours as much as I do mine, these things are great for what you pay for them. Thanks for checking out the r vids, keep it Blue Collar!
I just bought one these for 200 bucks. It's been in the water x2. Good video ,I was wondering about its stability.
@kimdecell5096 not too bad just. Two people with beers your all good
$800 now
Yea man I noticed that recently, inflation is getting crazy.
Jump jump🤣
I was hoping for a true stability test with someone sitting in it. It's a Jon Boat not a Bass boat. Jon boats are designed to sit in not stand in. You want to stand up? Get a Bass boat.
