Is Sergio Ramos The Greatest Defender Of All Time?!

- With the news that Sergio Ramos' 16 years at Real Madrid is coming to an end, following five La Liga titles, four Champions League trophies, and 671 appearances, there has been plenty of plaudits aimed in the 2010 World Cup winners direction.
Few would deny that Ramos is one of the defining defenders of his generation, but is he the greatest defender or centre-back of all time?
That's the claim made by a lot of people in recent weeks, so in this opinion piece, HITC Sevens takes a look back at Ramos' achievements, his talents, and whether he can really be bestowed with such a prestigious title.
OPINION PIECES PLAYLIST - • Opinion Pieces
Had Ramos played in the 80s and 90s he would have less than 5 red cards. That sort of thuggery used to be common place in the game. He's definitely in the top 10. He's converted from RB to CB like Puyol and from defender to midfielder like Lahm. Hes just pure quality but a top villain. Sergio Thanos.
Yes most of Ramos challenges would be accepted in those times
People forget at least twice he got himself sent of on purpose
@@sircrackerjack-9592 that is just his personality
Ramos reminds me of Drogba in a lot of ways, there's plenty of little things you can point out to criticise him, but he's a leader who lead by example and always came up trumps in the big games so he'll always be remembered as a great.
14 minutes in, and I still thought we were still in the intro hahaha
I’d say hes up there, but if you’re ranking purely on defensive talent/ability, he’s not close to Maldini or others I can’t think of at the moment
He wasn't even better defensively than Chiellini, Barzagli, Vertonghen, Boateng, Godin, Alderweireld, Kompany, Pepe, VVD in their best year. Just players in the most recent era.
His leadership and goalscoring was world class but he's very overated in actual 1v1 defending. Trophies doesn't necessarily equate to full talent

That ending speech about not having to be the best player in one position, that the important thing is the memories you leave behind for the fans was legendary!
Maldini is still the greatest for me. At his peak he could score long shots, make solo runs, beat defenders, deliver pinpoint crosses, spray long balls etc. All those whilst still being a colossus in defence
Ramos may not have the long shots but he still is a Real centurion, so he could still come toe to toe with Maldini
Idk imo Beckenbauer is still #1

Correct
I'd put Bobby Moore in as best Central Defender. Certainly for England and in top European 5 of all time
Ramos can take long kicks, free kicks, and scored in the final, scored a bicycle kick goal, good dribbling because he played at Rb, penalty,
It’s difficult because you have someone like Franz Beckenbauer who literally created a new defensive position won the Euros and made three World Cup finals with two he won as player and manager and with Ramos’ record of red cards I wouldn’t put him up there as the greatest.
You wouldn't, but I would.

Franz Beckenbauer did not face the same kind of athletes defenders face today. In the old times football players had skill, talent and were great players but today football players are athletes aswell and have better physiques and are just on another level. Beckenbauer was great for his time. Maybe he wouldnt be that great in todays standards
Agree, ramos trophy cabinet isnt even bigger than someone like pique so trophy cabinet being used as the main reason people cite for him being the greatest defender of all time isnt even that justifiable. Requested this a while back but could you make a video on elias figueroa, possibly south america's greatest defender of all time? Won the south america player of the year 3 times in a row while the likes of Pele and Zico were active and apparently was voted fifa player of the year twice. Other feats include being named best defender at the 1974 wc despite chile exiting in the group stages. However, despite all these, he is rarely spoken outside South America and I hope you could give him some recognition.
Consistency is what will always makes Ramos better than pique. Pique after 2015 has been a shadow of himself. You can't even say that for Ramos. Every season he seems to improve and become clutch
Pique has pretty much faded. Sergio Ramos however is still in his peak. Consistency is what separates them both
@@leeregno Pique was only bad after 2019. Ramos hasn’t been good this seaosn
Absolutely agree, I was just providing a counterargument for those who go and define greatness based purely on trophies. There is a very common trend for hyperbole in sports journalism lately - it may be that claiming someone is a GOAT is a great way to get hits on the internet - just look at F1 articles comparing Hamilton to Schumacher, Senna or the myriad of drivers from the past.
I definitely agree that his temperament is a definite weakness. If I compare him to Pompey legend and one club man, Jimmy Dickinson, who also played in defence, he never earnt a single card in 764 club and 48 England appearances. Keeping yourself on the pitch is an excellent way to help your team win.
Not sure that it's entirely unfair to compare Hamilton to Schumacher and Senna given his incredible consistency and accolades. Definitely not hyperbole in that sense, but I do agree with you about the general state of sports journalism. On the other hand though, why did you click on this video?
Schumi and Hamilton both had dominating cars. Guys like Ralf Schumacher and Daniel Riccardo would have a few championships with those cars especially Mercedes George Russell proved this by dominating Sakhir before retiring which he undoubtedly would have won.
For me Its Alonso that's the goat his drives for Ferrari in 2012 and 2013 and McLaren in 17-18 and Alpine this year show his racecraft.
Schumacher and Senna are my top two. ;)
In terms of red cards we also have to take into consideration the different eras and how officating has changed in comparison. Back in the day players were allowed to get away with far more physical challenges than today. You could see this in almost every sport. Referees are quicker to hand out penalties for even minor fouls nowadays
Doesn't matter. Players need to adapt to the rules of the game. If they can't do that then they definitely aren't the greatest in their respective position. Ramos is a great but there's many CBs that have far more to their game than Ramos. I also don't think he was the most reliable CB either. Just like Vidic he lets his anger control him in a dangerous and poor way. So he's not even greatest in his own league just like Vidic also isn't the greatest in his own league. So nevermind greatest of all time period.
Hierro scored 21 golas in season 91-92, but I think he played a lot as a midfielder that year as well.

5. Puyol
He’s up there with the Italian greats
Even Beckenbauer wouldn't have won a ballon dor in the messi ronaldo era
Don't be so sure.

People really have to stop conflating achievements with ability. Sergio Ramos is not the greatest defender of all time, he was just good enough to play for Real Madrid for 15 years. That indicates that he’s a top quality player, but doesn’t make him the greatest.
Why didn't Cannovaro succeed at Madrid especially when he just won the ballon dor and World Cup. Madrid is probably the biggest club in the world and no footballer stays there for 16 years without being one of the greatest of all time you think I'd Ramos didn't have crazy ability he would be at Madrid for that long. Look at the amount of greats who have failed at Madrid like Kaka whilst Ramos stayed there almost all his career
@@James_utd123 There are a million different reasons why a top class player might fail at a particular club. Perhaps if Sergio Ramos had gone to Juve he might have flopped. I’m not saying Ramos wasn’t a top class player, just that being good enough to play for Real for 15 years means that he was one of the best defenders in the world for a long time, not necessarily one of the greatest of all time. Gary Neville won eight league titles with Manchester United and was first choice right-back for about 15 years too. Over that period Man Utd we’re also one of the world’s top clubs, but I wouldn’t say Neville was anywhere close to being the greatest ever right-back.

Have to say , i appreciate the way you were pronouncing his name. It really was quite good. Not many people would attempt it once ,much less throughout the whole video
Team achievements and individual abilities are two separate things. Team achievements are contextual, individual ability is objective. Maldini is by far the best. Best left back for 15 years and then best centre back for the following 10. Great with the ball, great in the air, nearly impossible to get past, dominant on the pitch, no matter which other legends were on the pitch, with or against him. And he played (and dominated) in the best era of football, with the highest concentration of great players the sport has ever seen. Simply unmatchable

How does someone having seen someone play or not affect how good they were? Both Maldini and Beckenbauer were a league above Ramos.
Yh and another one that doesn’t get recognised is Bobby Moore. He captained England to there only World Cup and managed to captain West Ham to multiple trophies including the European cup winners cup which was a significant trophy at that time. He done all this with West Ham which were exactly the same back then as they are now. He also managed to come 3rd one year in the ballondor which (as both a defender and a West Ham player) is crazy. Players like Pele, George best and beckenbeaur all call him the greatest ever defender. I think because he didn’t play for any of the European giants (Manchester Utd, Real Madrid etc) he doesn’t get appreciated enough.
He won just 2 trophies with West Ham. Doesn't mean he wasn't one of the GOATs. Pele called him the best he had played against. His trophy cabinet had the Harry Kane syndrome.

@@vb2388 Baresi not playing 1994 final? lol he was the motm of the final -> ruclips.net/video/boPQNpPvJq0/видео.html
For me he's somewhere near top 10, but he will never be at the same level as Elías Figueroa and Daniel Passarella
He is the 5th best defender of all time behind
Beckanbaur
MALDINI
Baresi
And puyol
Puyol 😂
Good pronunciation Alfie!!
Even as a Madrid Fan, I don't think Ramos is the greatest defender of all time, but I do think he's definitely in the top 5 or 10 of all-time.

@@MATTHEWMYTHHAVEN The Rice and Curry news team. Come on bruh.
Maldini and Baresi and either Nesta or Cannavaro are top 3, the best ever in my and almost everyone's opinions i believe.
Great vid. Abso spot on analysis imo. The man has heart and skill in equal measure. PSG are getting exactly what they have needed for ever. This is the upgrade on Thiago Silva they have needed.
I've been saying Ramos is the best 🔥🔥💯
You should probably pick a different sport then. Or do you live in an alternate universe where Maldini never existed?
@@VishvendraSingh-go3zd He's one of the best, but the best? Nah, you're reaching way too far.
Would love to see a what on earth video on Real Madrid
Definitely in the discussion, but I’d say he’s behind Beckenbauer and maldini
He's definitely in the top 10 - 20.
@LEOMESHI you know there’s a thing called footage right?
@LEOMESHI no, there’s documented footage of entire matches, there’s also statistics which don’t lie, you don’t have to watch every single thing they do to make an informed decision
@LEOMESHI So you are going to discount the ability of EVERY single footballer and football era because you didn't see them play? That ridiculous
@LEOMESHI Imagine your kids talk about Messi like this lol
Clutchest defender of all time 🙌
Honestly I think the stats of how many Red and Yellow cards received actually makes a defender better, you have to do the dirty work and Sergio Ramos is king at that
So leaving your team with 10 men makes you a better defender? Seriously? And exactly what is the 'dirty work'? Having opponent players leave the pitch on stretcher? Just count how many times Madrid lost a match due to this criminal being sent off. Anybody can kick shins and ankles. It doesn't take much skill to do that.
@@piscesman54 dont know, dont care
For me the likes of Costacurta, Maldini, Nesta, Stam, Beckenbauer, Hierro, M. Sanchis, Beppe Bergomi, Walter Samuel, D Agger or R Ferdinand are that lil bit better buuut Ramos is among some of the all time greatest defenders yea :)
Nice Sergio Ramos pronunciation, mate
"Tendency to blur the line between aggression and down right recklessness"
Of course they wouldn't. They would all be in the hospital.
Ah, so that's why this is called the beautiful game!
But it cant those players where still modest when it came to it ramos get angry to the point where he let's it get to him and in his head a defender let alone captain should not be sent off almost 2x a season a defender and captain thats willing to risk losing 2 games a season for 15 years in the league alone for the sake of throwing a strop like ramos does is a shit defender
@@user-op6kt8pg9y The result achieved by his club and country prove your argument to be invalid. Nobody over the same time period has won more trophies.
@@jamesmccreery250 complete lie there's lots of players who have won more trophies since ramos debut boating another defender being one of them
For me beckenbauer, maldini and baresi are peak.Ramos is better of the rest debatible.Tbh can't decide between passarella,Figueroa, desailly and Ramos
The think about ramos is
He is a great defender
People just overrate him so much because of popularity it is getting annoying
Can make a case for him in top 10-15 though, just from his consistencies
Ramos often reminds me of Stefan Effenberg. Never any hesitation and very vocal leadership as well as you say Alfie a lot of cards
Not even top 10 but still the best of last decade.
Name me 10 better cos he's top 3 all time

Yes. The answer is yes
Simple answer: No, Sergio Ramos is not the best defender all time.
Recency bias.
Absolutely agreed
Agreed not even close
Agreed, Beckenbauer, Maldini, potentially Cannavaro, Baresi would be some of my best defenders but Ramos is still a legend
Ramos has won every single trophy available in football and he was captain of Madrid when they won 3 champions leagues in a row no defender is better than Ramos ever
Have anybody here saw Maldini or nesta or beckenbaur ramos is the greatest
Definitely not..
Maldini, Baresi, Beckenbauer etc are far better defenders..
100%
Its debateble
Beckenbauer was not that great defensively

Can I just say not even the most deluded Liverpool fan asked if Van Dijk was the ‘greatest’ PL cb, but the ‘best’ which you agreed is a different thing and is a fair thing to ask
Yes definitely #1
it has to be him, his achievements are astronomical
that's team's trophy
You HAVE to do a “what what’s going on” derby county edition!!
A story that involves:
- Candy crush owner nearly bankrupting himself
- An owner finding a loophole to sell a stadium to himself which might have saved the club
-The EFL trying their best to relegate us and take money off us (I swear this is more than Bias paranoia)
- Deals falling through with Sheik Mansours cousin
- Being conned by a Spanish anti vaxing, far right nationalist supporting and former boxing con artist who owes money to Indonesia
- The club being left with 13 actual players on the books
So so so much more if you want to go deeper including the drink driving sacking which we’ve had to pay out our former captain 2m
We’re almost bankrupt
Please look into it. I love the channel ❤️
