Interesting that they can’t seem to agree on what the song means. When I first heard it and read the lyrics, I got a distinct Morrissey-esque anti-immigration vibe but maybe I missed something. Pete and Carl have always admittedly had this idealized romanticized version of old Albion so I wonder if the modern England with it’s immigration crisis is somehow it odds with their vision. They’d never admit it because it would be bad PR and potentially get them canceled, but that was the initial vibe I got.
Gary is overstating it a bit. He's talking about the Aurelian Moors who were a troop of about 500 North African moors, but that's out of 18,000 strong of Romans on the wall. So to say that black people built Hadrian's wall is not okay. History aside - Gary is incredibly annoying. This entire panel he talks over people and answers one question by going off on such a long tangent that has nothing to do with the question and just talks and talks and talks. He reminds me of the energy vampire Colin in What We Do In the Shadows. He's such an annoying narcissist. I always think about how he was not part of the band but a hired gun brought in to record the demos to send to rough trade and then they just stuck with him. He is not reflective of the band at all. Though he's a good drummer he's not an artist. Can't look at him without thinking of the word "poser"
@theworstguy390 actually its personal beef with annoying ignorant people alert.. like you. But at least you KNOW you're annoying by labeling yourself "the worst guy" so can't fault you for that cause you actually come with a warning label. Keep calm and carry on being the worst guy

That's not true, it is generally recognised that 1% of London was black in the 1780s - that's about 10,000 people. That's a significant number, certainly not "no black". Before WW2 Liverpool especially had a significant black population too.
Very big admirer of how eloquent these guys are - young people of the country take note, you can do this.
thank you whoever you are "baby j" loved this interview as a whole and thanks for uploading it!
Excellent discussion of a great track. Thanks for recording and uploading.
beautiful and truthful song
Gary, well said
What did he say that was well said?
Shoutout to Gary! Thats exactly what I got from the song!
I agree with Carl with regards to looking at it from all angles, especially from watching the video. There is good and bad in everything.

The drummer is talking absolute nonsense here. There were basically no blacks in the UK before WW2.
Agreed. He probably watched Bridgerton and got confused.
