Alex played Speed metal before (almost) it was even born. Sure, you had stone cold crazy and others. But this is the blueprint for that. He deserves even more recognition.
actually you can trace almost everything he does here back to Carmine Appice in like '68/'69. Alex would probably be the first to say it, he's always had and shown respect to where he comes from musically
@@Brokenwreckrd surprised nobody said Billy Cobham or Simon Phillips, Leslie Binks, Louie Bellson, and about a dozen others! Keep listening and learning...
Ted Templeman, producer, said they never did any more than 3 takes of a song back then because studio time was expensive and they didn't want to lose the "feel" of a song.
Bleeding into different tracks was the rule rather than the exception in the 70s-early 80s, because bands like Van Halen, Ozzy, AC/DC, Priest, Maiden, Sabbath and Zeppelin mostly played live in the studio with very little overdubbing.
There are lots of comments on here about how this was the first speed metal song. It certainly is considering I never heard anyone do bass drumming like this before 1980 in a song. It's the power and the perfect timing that is impressive. However check out the fills at 1:57 and 2:19. Not only are they perfectly executed but there is so much power behind them. Today you've got people working for years to get up to that kind of speed and I don't think they have that kind of power.
Van Halen always played live in the studio and recorded all the instruments at the same time which is what gave their albums so much energy. So The drums in this video is when Eddie, Alex & Michael were all playing together and this is the take that ended up on the album. So Alex either came up with the idea for the cowbell part afterwards and/or the microphones could pick up the sound of the cowbell better if it was recorded separately. Drums are challenging to mic because there’s multiple drums and cymbals and it’s also an acoustic instrument.

Outshined by Eddie because he was up front but AVH could still play with any rock band to this day. I believe he is one of the most overlooked drummers ever. He has a deep swing groove unmatched by nearly everyone.
Metallica's Kill Em All has a lot of track bleeds as well, but by 1988 it was mostly gone in the newer era. They lost much of their appeal after that too.

Alex Van Halen is my favorite drummer of all time🤙🏽
Alex playing speedmetal/thrash metal before it was born

Alex and Billy were huge!
Alex and Billy were innovators!
dude is a monster on double bass
No other drummer played double bass drums with that power and intensity, Alex is one of a kind.
Plus he played with the biggest drum sticks too.

Dave Lombardo 🤔🤔🤔
Phil Taylor from Motorhead

Wow! The double bass drums are AMAZING!! SO powerful!
I always felt that the drums on this song were way too buried in the mix. Refreshing!!
I couldn't agree more, Paul! To be honest, *this* sounds wayyy better to me than the actual full studio recording with its weird vocals! 🙂
Genius, pure genius. The sound, the attack, the precision. Love ya Big Al.
Very underrated drummer . Akways liked Alex .
LOVE the drum only stuff, really get a deeper look into Al's ability! Rockin the double bass on this tune and not missing a beat !!!!!!!
Awww man you missed the awesome cowbell fill that precedes his tomfill after the solo!
Alex is so bad ass!!!
Insane
Alex is just a unique player with a very distinctive sound. The original Brown Sound.
Exactly!
Though I doubt he can play that fast now at age 69.
This is amazing. Alex’s power, speed, and precision are unparalleled in my opinion, and recording only cements that. Awesome.
Every little song Alex brings an MVP performance.
that first roto tom lick is so messy and so beautiful
I think it’s Octabans? Sounds great though for sure!
Crazy blitz BD speed. And legend says VH often got the song on the first takes.
Really? Damn he's an extraterrestrial
Ted Templeman, producer, said they never did any more than 3 takes of a song back then because studio time was expensive and they didn't want to lose the "feel" of a song.
Amazing. I always felt Alex’s drums were buried in the mix in all their albums up until 1984 where he finally got the attention he deserved.
Completely agree. He did sound pretty good on ‘Balance’
Wife: Whatcha listening to?
Me: It's complicated.
i always thought he had a attack like Keith moon, but better, Al has always been in my top 3 drummers
wow. amazing playing.
Killer chops
Amazing...The Mighty Alex Van Halen!
I got one word for this... BEAST! Long Live the Mighty Van Halen!
Hey Larsssss!!!! this is speed metal!!!!
Hahahaha! Lars was physically too small to play with this type of precision and power.
i can finally figure out what he's doing in the verses, its so buried on the album I couldn't figure out how to play this the right way
Needs more cowbell.

Mind = Blown 🤯 Absolutely freakin' amazing! 🤩 That looks more like Neil Peart's kit from the mid 70's in the thumbnail, though! 😉

Daaaaaaamn!
Holy flurking schnitt.
1:57...🤘🤘🤘🥁🥁🥁
Un...fuckin...real
Cowbell bruh, where'd it go? 😥
Cowbell was on the same track as the lead guitar, I didn't add that track to the mix.
I think Alex was just as Anton drums as Eddie was on guitar. These guys had a great gene 🧬 pool 🏊♀️.
Big Al rips! Ted and Donn didn’t do him any favors.
So they overdubbed the cow bell
1:43 where is the cowbell?! 🤔
Probably a percussion over-dub and therefore on a different sub mix.
Cowbell???

Amazing! In which program is this recorded? AUDACITY or ...?
Grtz Paul
I used Audacity only to mix drum tracks.
I use Audacity too, where can i find the tracks to upload them in my Audacity, if possible?

@@kiboko_drummer thanks a lot! I will surely examin. As a drummer it is also very nice pratice stuff. So i can practise, record that and judge it...
Locomotive style
No cowbell? 😁
Alex is so badass, why he doesn't get enough credit as a great drummer? Is it because he's not technical enough. Anybody can answer that question?
He is known as one of the best ever. What are you talking about?
He’s in the most bad ass band ever with his last name in the title.
Outshined by Eddie because he was up front but AVH could still play with any rock band to this day. I believe he is one of the most overlooked drummers ever. He has a deep swing groove unmatched by nearly everyone.

Bleeding me ... of all my talent.
Check out Live hammerfest fight fire with fire 1985 . Lars is a monster in that concert.
Very Good
🤘🤘
Can you do Deep six of marilyn Manson?
I beind telling my friends about your channel💪💪💪
Thanks for telling your friends. I have tracks from just one Marilyn Manson song - The Beautiful People. Unfortunately, there are no other tracks.
All due respect to Dave Lombardo, but he does not come close to this.
