  • I'm excited for next year's 3rd grade curriculum choices for my daughter! She has been loving The Good and The Beautiful and since it's been working really well for her, we will continue to use it for most of her curriculum. I'll be sharing her individual subjects for LA, handwriting, typing, a science unit and our math story for this year (it's kind of long so thanks for bearing with me!). And yes, I will be eating my words 🤦🏻‍♀️🙈 But overall, I think it will be a great year and am looking forward to it!

I love that you're listening to your gut and going back to what works better for her and what she enjoys more, regardless of what you've said in the past. I think we've all been there and done that, we just weren't recorded saying it. 🤷‍♀😂

I went back to TGTB LA for my 3rd grader this year. I was dreading it but we’re honestly loving it. The readers have been 10/10! My son already wants to buy the sequels to some of them. When I told him we’d be reselling these he asked me not to so he could read them again later. I think that speaks volumes. That’s all we use TGTB for though. BJU for math for him and my youngest. My oldest, rising 6th, will only use CLE and is thriving with that.

Here’s the thing, a program might not work for your at the moment you’re saying is not working for you but It might work for you as the seasons of life change or as younger students get older. The fact that you can bring a program back into circulation in your homeschool only shows how attuned you are with your kids and their needs, and that is the only thing that matters.

Please don’t ever apologize for doing what your children need. I will say TT lessons did move too fast for my daughter who needs a bit more assistance with math. Even with me sitting with her during the lesson she just looked up at me with tears in her eyes. We used Math with Confidence and I saw her thrive so much. She is getting bored with it now that we are towards the end, so I have been crossing out stuff that she knows well and I will have her finish. She asked for TGTB for next year.

Lol, no worries! That’s the beauty of homeschooling- we get to customize to our children’s needs as they come. I’m trying CLE math for my 2nd grader as TGAB was almost too colorful for my son, sooooo, we will see if we end up switching back 😅

So I never used simply good and beautiful math but we did use the original good and beautiful math. I loved it but it wasn’t clicking with my daughter. Math with confidence has been a game changer for us. As well as their math addition/subtraction facts that stick book. They also have a multiplication/division book for math facts.

I love that you find what works for your girls and not just what works for you or what you already have just to use it. It is encouraging. My son learns very different than my daughter so I have not been able to reuse very much curriculum. Helps to know that it’s not wasteful when trying to suit the right child with the right curriculum!❤😊

Definitely agree! Unfortunately factoring in curriculum loss is part of the process…not saying just be frivolous, but definitely realize that curriculum you buy might not work and replacement is needed

My daughter really clicked with Simply Good and Beautiful Math…until she didn’t. We took half a year to get through 1 unit of Level 3, and when we took the Unit 1 Review it became apparent that she wasn’t retaining the information. We have since started both my kids over in Math-U-See and I feel like it has been a great fit for them. I am hoping by laying the foundations again for my daughter, she will be more success in math in the future.

Math With Confidence is completely different in the way things are taught than TGATB, in MWC it’s a lot of hands on manipulatives until it clicks. It’s been a breath of fresh air for us and we absolutely love it! I really think your child will love MWC and all the little games. Plus it also holds the parents hand so you don’t have to “learn how to do it” you just read and do the lesson. It’s now my (math hating) child’s favorite subject

We were on the Math struggle bus this past "2nd grade" year, in the beginning of the year we switched from TGTB to Apologia 2 and it just wasn't working for my daughter although I liked it. She requested to go back to TGBG and so we did and we ended her year just finishing the 3rd unit so we'll be starting "3rd" grade with unit 4 before moving on. We also have some Kumon workbooks to practice addition and subtraction along with recently for summer fun math a sticker addition & subtraction book. I love that you are so transparent and share the struggles as well as the victories. It makes it so real compared to just only hearing that everything worked out and went smoothly all year long.

Girl, ain’t nobody rolling their eyes over here! I went back to TG&TB for my middle daughter after the gamification aspect of TT stressed her out! 😅
I have three daughters and all three use different math programs. My youngest is super wiggly but also good at math so Math With Confidence is a great fit for her. My middle daughter just kind of loves everything about TG&TB- we did LA level 3 last year and while some of the books make me roll my eyes, she was a fan! She’s technically in 5th grade but I’ve found TG&TB to be a little advanced, at least in comparison with TT.
I don’t know if a math program exists that will make my oldest daughter love math but she has been doing TT with some modifications and it’s what has worked the best so far.
Good for you for going with your gut and doing what was best for her!

We both really enjoy the shared readers so far.

I use MWC with my youngest daughter and it’s very similar to the old TGTB math. Only difference being you stick on one topic longer and don’t jump around. If you were going to try a different math I’d go with Apologia. I use that with my older kids after The Simply Math didn’t work for them and it’s been wonderful. And I hear you. I thought I’d never use TGTB LA again. My daughter and I were both so fried with it after she used it k-3! But life happened and my youngest daughter is doing their level k and the revised versions are so so well done. Completely different then the old. So all my kids will be using LA from TGTB this fall. Old math > simply math.
Old LA < new LA. lol that’s how it’s been for our family.

We are using TGTB math. My daughter especially likes it. The art really calls to her. My son is “ok” with it, but I think he could be a little more challenged (I may supplement a bit. We’ll see how next year goes). My older kids all used MUS. If I was looking for something else for 3rd grade I would look at Math with Confidence. It looks like a great program.

We've had a horrible time mwc. We had to pause so many times and every time we had a new concept introduced, it was tears. I had to teach her the concept from other resources and then going back to the mwc workbook for practice.
I decide to just get math u see betta to work through the summer and if that works out for her then we will move to gamma.

Girl, I can sooo relate! I will have a 3rd grader next year also!! So we started RightStart math last year and got through the whole book then started level C in the middle of this school year. After about 15 lessons we were done. She was crying every lesson. We both dreaded math. I thought it was the one and I did not want to admit it was the curriculum that wasn't working. I was blaming her. It was wayy too much for her. Too heavy and overwhelming. We technically didn't even Start RightStart's 2nd grade level until over halfway through her 2nd grade year so i already felt behind. I finally decided it was time to say goodbye and we went with my second choice which was Math With confidence. We are on week 8 and it has been an absolute game changer. I am kicking myself for not picking it sooner. Math is her fave subject now, it's insane. So we are barely on week 8 of second grade math and she has like 2 weeks of school left. I am not letting that bother me though because it is at her pace. So she will be in 3rd and still on a 2nd grade curriculum but I plan to do some lessons in the summer. My biggest lesson this year was having to accept the fact that the curriculum I thought would be " the one" was so not it. I kept pushing it so hard to make it work and it just did not. I'm so grateful there are options out there for us and we don't have to settle!! I hope y'alll find the one! Have a wonderful summer!

    This was so helpful!
It is a RELIEF to see you have been doing this for 7 years and still are looking to best custom fit curriculum to your children.
My daughter (my oldest going into 2nd) math has been a tough one. We started with Masterbooks 1 for K , that was too gentle and repetitive for her taste. I put her in ABEKA 1 this year, but found that the lack of instruction was tricky. So we landed on CLE (Christian light education) for fall. But we're using MWC this summer to and as a "fun Friday " math during the upcoming school year.
    It's been a journey.
This was extremely encouraging! Thank you for your transparency and thoughtful explanation! You're incredible!!!!!

My 3rd grader is my oldest for next year. Her curriculum for next year is similar to your older daughter's choices: TT for Math and BJU English. Im equally excited and intimidated because they are both new to us (coming from Abeka) hopefully its not as tough as I imagine! We are also going to do Beautiful Feet Book's Science Season's Field, it looks really sweet like the one your youngest enjoys!

I’m having similar issues with math with my 3rd child. We were doing the TGTB math, but we quit and moved to Saxon at the end of her Kindergarten year. We did Saxon all year for first grade, and it worked, because she seems to learn math very slowly and Saxon is methodical. Then I printed out TGTB Math 1 to review over the summer, and she loves it so much better. It might be because it’s first grade math which she just completed with Saxon, but it’s also because it’s so much prettier and full of games. Also, I despise teaching Saxon’s elementary grade curriculum. There are so many moving parts. I want to go back to TGTB next year, but I know it’ll start moving too fast after a few months 🤦‍♀️ Decisions, decisions….

  • @christinem9935
    @christinem9935 6 месяцев назад

I don't have the same specific issues but the general issue of what math curriculum to use for my kids is definitely a thing. My 3rd grader completed MWC Level 2 earlier in the year(she didn't like) and did Apologia Level 3(didn't like or dislike...neutral). She finished that early so we're limping to the end with the first Horizons Level 3 book that she does NOT like. I didn't even think of printing out some Simply Math...might try that to see what she thinks. I think she's a bit advanced and likes a challenge so I'm not sure what we'll do next year.
