Greetings from northen Sweden. That was a lot of cardboard and plastic containers in there. Here I must say we are good at taking cardboard and paper and plastics to a separate collecting station or the council transfer station. We also have separate bins for our organic waste like left over foods and things like that, it gets collected much the same way as this video.
As much as I love the ZR it MTM needs to redesign the hopper and packer. You can see how lightweight material just doesn’t cooperate with the current design
Well let’s start by saying that recycling material is harder to pack then regular trash. The designer created a slant flow design on the blade to keep material on downwards slide. I have noticed that we have not seen a video in which the crusher panel is dropped and a multi cycle is ran. This design is based off of a front loader pick which naturally can hold more and pack better
Packer extended proxy needs to be adjusted. Packer can go in about another foot and that will make a world of difference on a recycle route. We have these trucks regularly getting 6 to 7 ton of recycle on a 31 yard body. Hope this helps!
In my opinion I think the reason why your blade inside your truck bigots overstuffed of recyclables because people don't break down there cardboard and recyclables are too bulky
For some reason, my recycling truck won't allow glass. Does anyone else's recycling have this rule? 18:36 when you can empty a full recycling bin with a box on top that's also full...you are a *Smooth Operator*
why don't you use the second blade more often? only once has it been used at the end of the video. i think you could squish down on the materials and use the main blade to compact it in further.
Absolutely love the ZR but if MTM could redesign the hopper and packer to be less reliant on gravity to get material to pack that would greatly improve its efficiency on single stream routes
If there's a way to make it where crap doesn't get hung up on the blade it would be great that's the problem I had with a 31yd new way recycle would catch the blade and clog it all up
Great video! I love watching these trucks on recycle. Wow a new truck, these trucks sure are popular compared to several years back. Everyone seems to be buying them now. Especially Republic, my local hauler. I've seen them buy these trucks nationwide it's crazy. I've heard some good and bad things about these trucks here and there from drivers. I heard that the grabbers leak/lose pressure after a while. What is your experience with that? Despite some drivers I know saying these trucks are terrible on recycling this one seemed to fair well against the stream except for when everything starts getting full, but hey this is only 28 minutes of your work day and not the whole route so I'm sure you know the full story. Thank you for sharing, much appreciated!
Man I love your comments so much! Great base for dialogue! We do in fact have a 2017 that's starting to loose pressure; it's not able to pick up all of the yw totes anymore. That's not good, because then another truck has to go (sometimes far out) to get just a few totes. Also, I think the spec for new ZRs is only 500lbs lifting capacity, which is lower than a lot of competitors. All this to say I think there's room for improvement in that engineering. After seeing how other bodies pack recycling, I can say I'm thoroughly unimpressed with McNeilus' ability to do the same. The design relies too much on gravity to pull the refuse to the bottom of the hopper, and with light recycling, that just doesn't happen. So you either have to cycle the packer many times in hopes of dislodging the material, or you have to climb up there to smash it down. Noone wants to climb up there more than they have to, for both time and safety concerns. We just demo'ed a Currotto/Heil Half Pack in this subdivision that packed it without a problem. Much safer, MUCH more efficient. And yeah, unfortunately this video was started right at the beginning of the subdivision, and it was still already jamming :(
@@medicalgarbage3575 Wow thank you for the info. I also forgot to ask in my original comment if this new truck has the packer cycle twice feature? When the ZR first came out they had the packer cycle twice after each dump cycle. I wonder if they got rid of that feature since then.
@@medicalgarbage3575 Interesting, in the demo video for the McNeilus ZR they said the ZR packs twice after each dump. Could be just an option for haulers to choose i guess. I heard that feature had mixed opinions too. Some haulers liked it and some didn't.
@@Trashman702 Yes DaDee went out of business a year ago but got bought by BTE which now holds the rights for the Scorpion and Mantis, building is done by G&H though.
No one in any trash truck videos has shown or described how the pickup arm works or how they judge if the cans are empty before putting them down. Is that info you're not supposed to divulge?
@@wnytrashtrucks beg to differ with you about most people know, I operated a FEL back in 1975 for a short period and the equipment available then was certainly not what you have now, ie, no backup or hopper camera, no sliding top door, no joystick etc., hence my reason for asking.
Yep the hopper camera (if the manufacturer put it in a good place) kind of looks into the hopper and into the inside of the can, when the can is in the dumping position. So if a cardboard box is jammed in there there's a good chance you'll see it; if it's low down in the can, this isn't the case. If your camera is broken, you just have to shake the can, hope everything comes out, and look at it as best you can (no pun intended) when it comes back down. In terms of how the arm works, what were you looking for? :) On these, there are two hydraulic-driven motors attached to a large plastic toothed wheel. They spin the wheel, which in turn climbs up the large black "candy cane" track. One of the motors has a brake on it to prevent the can from falling, in case of hydraulic failure
@@medicalgarbage3575 reference the pickup arm, do you operate it manually, joystick etc, or is it automatic when you pull up to a can. Also do you only use your mirrors to line up with the cans? Another question, how far can the CNG trucks go before needing to refuel and are they more prone to repairs than the diesel trucks of the past?
That cardboard eats up a lot of room man and there is a ton of it out there. I drive a Heil Python and it’s the same thing with the cardboard, people don’t break it down and it eats up room. The most I got on recycle was 10 tons and that was packing every 2 lifts.
Some of the trucks I’ve used at work for residential recycling is between 3 and 5 ton of recycle but to put 5 ton on you’re fighting it like crazy hard.

Northern Sweden, very cool!! Thanks for your insight :)
I can see the value in 'breaking down your boxes' now 😅😅😅
The wear and tear these ASLs take is amazing. Over 1300-1500 times a day the Packer cycles and the arm goes up and down.
I'd love to see the same truck same view on a garbage route!! Thanks for the videos hope too see more!!

I just love McNeilus ZR trucks
There are the great trucks for refuse.
I'd agree they're good trucks for garbage, but I personally don't like them much for recycling :( packer design isn't sufficient to pack it in well

Actually I road in a McNeilus ZR garbage truck here in my county of Texas
Also the carts we have here in our county are 96-gallon carts here in our county Perry much it holds a lot of recyclables....
The ZRs run good on trash but mechanical maintenance on any McNeilus product is a pain
Another awesome video. We gotta get more at the dump though. lol

Can u do a video of it dumping !
Hey UPFan, I've got a vid of the same type of truck dumping yard waste at the end of my yard waste collection video :)
How can you tell that the truck is full?
It can't pack any more
That and there is a scale in the cab
Yeah, mostly when it stops packing. On recycling you rarely have to worry about weight restrictions, since it's so light
Medical Garbage With experience you generally start to get an idea for how heavy the truck is on recycling when it won’t pack anymore.
Ours take just over 13 (metric) tonnes (14.5 US tons), but we get about 7.5 tonnes (8.25 tons) on recycling.
I think your driver should have used the "push it down" panel more for the cardboard from 23:00 on....
Do they acually need to "break in"
How much could it hold???
This run was about 3 ton, and the truck wouldn't pack anymore
