    Good video. Good bag too. For anyone who is in doubt about this Mil-tec bag I'd like to give my 2 cents. I've had mine for approx 2 years and it has been fantastic for the duration. Used it for food shopping ( completely packed out every pocket) of about 25 kg once a week walking 4 miles and used it everyday with approx 10kg. I always have a heavy D-lock (kryptonite newyork) in the front bottom pocket and it's wearing the material very thin underneath but still holding up. Getting the whopping lock out of that pocket has also busted one zipper but other is ok. I nearly got a rush 72 but got this and was glad I did. I'm also gonna get another for prepping. It's basically a legendry Ruck Sack and the quality is amazing for 30 quid. Get one!

    I have this pack, the small one (regular ol' MOLLE version). Used for 2 or so years now - very decent! Been using it as my day-to-day pack and a lot for international travel. Comfortable, very adjustable, accommodates 15.6" laptops and tablets well. Plenty of space for a 2L water bladder and good anchor points for karabiners/misc crap. The drawstrings for the middle compartment's zip handles came off somewhat too easily on mine but it's no fuss. The other ones are holding well.
    Sexy in multicam!

    I just picked up one of these for £21 from Amazon in the UK. I think for the price you can't really go wrong!
    Thank you for the video review, it's clear that you've used this pack for an extended period of time and this makes this review one hundred times more useful than the other five or ten out there..! It's good to see that this pack can take some weight, but u think my first mod will be reinforcement of the shoulder straps, and thanks to your advice, the compression straps also..!
    I'll link you a video tutorial if I do mod the pack.
    All the best from sunny Wales!!

      I like it and still use it.
      The zipper I have not fixed and I try not to overload the pack so much these days...Weight is no problem I just try not to stuff it too much so that the zipper does not break!
      Have a great weekend

    repairing zip ties is the easiest thing in the world, you just cut both ties at the bottom so you can feed in the new lock mechanism (or the old one if you haven't lost it, if it is bent you can bend it back with pliers) front first. To prevent it from slipping out again make two holes, one left and one right slightly above where you made the cut and insert a cable tie to make a stopper, then the lock can't slip below. You can also sew the cut, but if you take regular strings they might tear if the zip lock cuts it and it might fall out again. Cable ties do the job, especially if you take large ones

      SpartanJohns Thx for the reply! :) Should be arriving in the mail today, ordered some cheap molle pouches from china at the same time, to get even more pockets :D my gopro stuff alone is a ton of bits and pieces, hoping ths bag will fit it nicely, along with everything else I need for a one day trip :)

      Hampus Lytz I have a cheap pouch like the Condor H2O form China. I really like it.
      When you get it and get a chance to put your gear in it and maybe test wear it, I would really appreciate your feedback. If you think I should have mentioned something in this video that maybe didn't come thru.
      I always appreciate feedback.

      SpartanJohns Will do! Hope you make more of these types of videos, as there are far too little to be found on the subject. A lot of people post vides on new stuff they have gotten, and I get that, it's fun :) What matters (to me personally) is how the specific product will do in the long run, nowadays when when everything that is not made in china costs an arm and a leg, this is more relevant than ever.

      +SpartanJohns ...blast from the past :) Had the Miltec Assault pack for 6 months now and it has followed me everywhere since the day I got it. Really happy with it, just the right size for my needs, only upgrades I made was adding some cheap pouches two on each side, and two on the back. Great for storing small stuff that would otherwise get lost in the bigger compartments (I'm a gopro addict, as an explanation to why I need all those small pouches ) :P Hope you're having a great weekend!

    Great videos, thanks. I tried that pack & you are right it is a great small/mid size pack. I do not have any complaints at all, it just did not do it for me. I use mine as a loaner now when a friend wants to join in the out of doors and he/she do not have a pack. Everyone that has used it and abused it has liked it. It cleans easy, takes a beating and keeps on. Hey thanks again for all the great videos.

    I have the same MilTec Backpack i brought from a Army Surplus Store here in New Zealand. I have the 25 Ltr MultiCam Recon and the 25 Ltr Black Recon pack. They retail for $69 New Zealand Dollars each. I use myn for daily use and carrying a bit of weight and have never had an issue with myn. It all comes down to how well you look after your gear as to it's lifespan. One of the main reasons why i bought it was that it was Made In Germany and not Made In China. It's a cheap option compared to something like the 5.11 versions for those on a tighter budget. I recommend this product.

    Good review man. I'm using the same pack for the last six or so years and finding it fantastic. I'm in the military and rather use this one for a one day pack than my issued pack simply for the various compartments, its easier to get my admin exactly where I need.. I've never hiked with it for more than an hour so I can't comment on comfort, but I can say the waist strap is totally useless and the shoulder straps need one of those little connector straps to take some weight off your shoulders and centralize the straps/pack. Other than that I haven't found it lacking, its totally worth the price.. I've probably been lucky because mine has remained more or less waterproof, but if the rain is very heavy I'll use plastic bag liners as a precaution. Plus my zips haven't broken, but my son who has the same pack has had problems with his zips.. I came back here to look for a review on the smaller 20l pack, I want one as a 'man bag' I guess, ie for packing the stuff I need walking around the base/barracks like note book, pens, phone charger and water bottle (stuff I want to get out of my pockets).. Good review, regards from Ireland.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  5 лет назад

      I have used mine for short hiking trips. 2-3-4 hours. It is not bad. Not the best by far. I removed the waist straps and now i still use it as a gym bag every day. and on weekends when i go at a cabin i pack it full of stuff...still going strong. I could not find another one. found the same model from other companies but they did not seem to be build as well
      I have been using this backpack now for over 7 years. that is not bad for the price i paid for it
      If you ever make a video about your loadout I think that would be interesting to see.

    thanks for that review. I just got one of these to check out for my employer (Military) and so far I am very impressed. The best bags we have had have been Berghaus but WOW are they expensive (and a little over-engineered). With regard to the wear/tear on the compression strap, I think this may be because you have loaded it vertically (putting a tripod on there for example). Looking at the stitching it is made to take a LOT of pressure pulled horizontally, but the webbing is too weak to take much strain vertically and is not designed to be load bearing. Thanks again, that is a VERY nice review (and I love your taste in cutlery)

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  9 лет назад

      +Peter Draper Thanks. Glad you liked it. The strap gave out, just like the zipper did, because every weekend when I go to a cabin I take this one and pack it full of gear and clothes. Way too much for this pack. I attached the strap back with needle and thread and the zipper is still as it was...no problems there...
      A friend of mine just told ma that he had a very disappointing experience with this pack...it came all undone after 3 months...
      Mine still works and as I did before, I still overload it every weekend, laptop, knives, clothes...still no problem.
      I was thinking about getting a new model(they call it laser cut or something like that) but I think I will wait a bit longer. For me this has been a good investment I hope it will also be one for you. If you find something I did not mention or that I think should have...I am always happy about feedbackHave a great dayDenis

    HI Denis, Wonderful review. I always like to see what packs everyone's packing and your always so thorough. Some folks like that clam shell style for the zips. If it was me though, I would sew them shut half way up. You can get the zipper fixed. I'd do it for you if we were closer. Loved seeing all the knives you were packing. Never can have enough right?

    I have the same model. i strip two pocket on the ( molly ) sides. And that alow me to distribute more weight. So I don't have the stress on the zipper/straps. I also put some straps on the front, over my chest, to to tighten so it sits better.
    I have had it for almost two year, and it`s still good..

    I've been running this pack design for years ,have tried others and the larger one of the same design , but keep coming back to the 20 lt ,getting a new one soon ,but the old one is still going strong ! I pack it way, way to heavy and drag it everywhere with me all the time 1000s of miles in cars and on motorcycles trips !
    I don't like the zipper placement on the larger outside pocket ( should not be between the pockets )or the strap attached to the larger outside pocket ( I relocated the buckles ) ,the straps are far to wide ( I like safety belt wide straps ) !
    great design great size must be good material or it would not have lasted ( it is still lasting ,just want a new pretty one ) !

      it's cool that you adjusted yours to fit your needs and likes. I was looking at getting something similar to this one but sturdier. This is still ok to this day. Nowadays it has emergency rain/cold gear in the trunk of my car.
      But TBH,for the money i paid for it and how long this one lasted....i can't complain!

    An older review, but still I bumped into the product and while I see it has a ton of practical features, the low price of it strikes me right in the face. The bottom line is that I can't really expect high quality and field robustness from a pack that costs € 30-40. Those more robust ones cost well over € 100 and typically still have less features. Thanks for reviewing the backpack!

      Kolo Polo I like to overload this one. Except for the busted zipper which I showed here it is still in working order.

    I bought one of these 2 years ago to use for work and initially I was concerned that the shoulder straps might part from the bag like your side strap has,but I don't put too much weight in it,so it has remained intact.
    The only real issue is that after 2 years of almost daily use,the waterproof plastic coating on the inside is now starting to crumble and part from the material,but the bag has not lost any of its integrity and I would recommend it to anyone on a tight budget! Be aware though;there are lots of copies of these bags but the miltec and red rock bags appear to be better quality?

    for the broken zip on the big compartment, any tailor can replace it in 10 mins, not sure if there are any in your area, but here in the uk, its not hard to find a tailor that fix clothings and sew up more complicated stuff in an average town. So yea try it out search online maybe, probably wont be able to find a paracord type that looks similar, but any regular black zip will stop the inconvenience I suppose.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  10 лет назад

      Unfortunately I could not find a tailor who would take care of this zipper without replacing it.
      That will probably be the next step.
      It still can be used and when I will have the time I will surely exchange the zipper...

      +SpartanJohns Hi John, thank you for your review, it was very thorough. I am planning a two week trip where I will be moving between cities often. This means that I will spend a lot of time walking, moving through airports & train stations, etc. I generally pack my things in an adidas sports bag. However, this must be carried by handle, or by strap that strains one side of your body and throws your weight off. I am searching for an alternative that I can carry on my back for these type of trips, but is durable and can be used for outdoor adventures. Would you recommend this back for packing enough clothes for two weeks, a spare set of shoes/boots, shower sandals and other items? Do you think the volume is abundant enough to the bag shown in the link below? I would love to purchase a large rucksack, but I need something that can fit into the overhead compartment on most airlines. I would love to hear your thoughts on this matter. Bis bald!

    excellent stuff. my small and large (large was edc for a long time) have great zippers and are generally fantastic packs. only thing that happened after a while was that the inside plastic lining and the pen-compartment in the front pouch ripped/peeled a bit.
    i'd rather buy one of these every 2-3 years, or multiples for different use than 5.11 or maxpedition stuff. only exception would be S.O.E. - i'd happily pay the price for their gear!

    Maybe you're a little over packed to get started, by the effort you take to put the backpack down at 7:00 I can tell there is a lot of weight in it. This I think makes it obvious for the backpack to start failing on some points..
    So here's a little hint to loosen weight: you don't need knifes and axes to go hiking !
    Thanks for the review it helped me out

    Den Rucksack habe ich auch und ich bin bisher sehr zufrieden. Einige bemängeln ja die Verarbeitung (ich habe den von MSH), aber ich hatte bisher keine Probleme. Bisher ist nur der Reisverschluss des Innenfachs im großen Hauptfach kaputt gegangen, der allerdings nach ein paar Tagen.
    Sonst bin ich sehr zufrieden, er lässt sich schön komprimieren und ich kann ihn auch mit in die Uni nehmen ohne zu 'taktisch' rüber zu kommen. Ich benutze den allerdings nur für den Alltag oder kurze Ausflüge.

    Ob die Qualität gut ist oder nicht. Daher finde ich es gut auch mal Deine kompetente Meinung zu hören. Zum Bushcraften ist er wirklich nicht schlecht für das Geld. Aber für größere Touren wo man kein Risiko eingehen möchte...ist dann ein TT oder Maxpedition sicherlich die bessere Wahl. Danke für das tolle Video und Deine Meinung. Lass es Dir gut gehen.

    I will try...but I will probably fail...in fixing the zipper that is...I could baton thru the zipper, or make plastic shavings to start a fire...but I probably will just make it worse :))
    Lately I really started t look for a "benchmark" knife for every grind, that is why so many knives..plus they add to the weight with little bulk...and I am trying to stay fit. :)

      Armatrack Cool! I love hearing that! Mine is also holding up. As you said...good for everything... have yet to run a marathon but I do take it to work and carry a lot of stuff around with it and, of course, I take it into the woods and also hunting.
      The only thing I don't like about it is the broken zipper but I can live with it.
      Maybe I will get another one in od green if I get around to it
      Thank you!

    The Maxped stuff seems to be allaround favorites. I understand that but the prices are also pretty spicy...
    This one is priced just right...I might just consider getting another one. I think that saving up for a Maxped would not wok in my case. I guess for me, the pack, is just something that has to work and I don't care much about it...it just has to carry stuff ;)

    Mil-Tec - sometimes it's worth the money. most times it isn't ;-)
    I once bought the Assault II and it went right back after unboxing. Advertised with 50l and I can put more stuff in my 18! liter Tatonka Daypack. A Joke! They seem to refer to the Deplacement as if it was a boat. I carried it once, was afraid it would rip right apart.
    I am surprised this worked so good for you. and how long it did!

    Salut Spartan.Keep up the good work.
    Iti propun sa faci niste review pt. ranita militara si sacul de merinde romanesc.Ar fi niste produse originale romanesti pe care le-am putea pune pe harta universala de bushcraft gear.Ranita si sacul sau geanta de merinde ar putea concura la egalitate fata de alte produse canvas renumite, ca rucsacul armatei italiene, germane, cehe samd.Romanian military canvas backpack/rucksack and Romanian haversack/shoulder bag/breadbag.
    Simple, rezistente, autentice.Din materiale organice, canvas si piele.
    Designul rucsacului si al sacului de merinde dateaza din 1939 si au fost pastrate neschimbate pana in anii 90.Cu acelasi model de rucsac si de sac de merinde s-a facut razboiul din est.Gasesti poze pe net cu coloanele de soldati romani prizonieri la stalingrad purtand in banduliera sacul de merinde.
    Le gasesti de cumparat pe okazii . ro , in stare foarte buna, la preturi modice.Ce spui, ar putea fi promovate ca marci simbol alaturi de alte rucsacuri si genti canvas din lumea bushcraft?

    salut si multumesc pentru prezentare! foarte articulat si la obiect.
    am un rucsac obisnuit de 25L pe care il folosesc de ceva vreme cand mai plec la munte. si am realizat de la o vreme ca vreau ceva mai mare. dar nu exagerat. asa ca am inceput sa caut pe internet. nu am gasit ceva deosebit.
    astazi am primit un newsletter pe mail de la military shop (nu fac reclama sau altceva) si la rucsac-uri mi a atras atentia acest model. am inceput sa ma documentez de brand ul MIL-TEC. am fost placut surprins de ce am gasit despre ei. asa ca am cautat si cateva filmulete. si iata ma aici. pot spune din nou ca iti multumesc.
    m am hotarat sa mi iau si eu unul. si sper sa aibe viata lunga in drumetiile mele. singurul lucru pe care trebuie sa l mai decid este daca il vreau in varianta neagra sau oliv.
    iti doresc o zi buna!

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  9 лет назад

      Stephen X Si eu as vrea sa mai imi cumpar unul in oliv. un prieten de-al meu si-a comandat de pe net si a platit in avans iar dupa ca nu i-a sosit a contactat firma..nu mai stiu de unde, iar acestia i-au spus ca nu mai e pe stoc. eu l-am cumparat pe acesta din intamplare de la un magazin. l-am vazut si l-am si luat la fata locului. inca il mai port desi acum, la padure, prefer gear slinger-ul. parca e mai practic. dar pentru drumetii de o zi la munte tot pe acesta il folosesc.
      anunta-ma daca ti-ai cumparat si daca it place si mai ales daca ai observat ceva ce iti place/nu iti place si nu am metionat.
      Denis

    So we are a year from this video any update on the pack. It seems over the years they have done some great quality control. I just ordered 2 and wanted to hear your updates on the pack. Still broken strap and Zipper? or were the easily repaired? I plan on using this as a Urban Search and Rescue pack. which means I'll move it at most 24 times a year potential deployments and live training. but when we do get out in the field it can take a good beating.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  10 лет назад

      A year...how time flies...
      The strap was fixed. Took it down and sewed it back with very resistant white thread...(had nothing black around)
      The zipper is still broken but it works well with just one zipper.
      I think that if you do not overpack it like I did you should be just fine.
      Wear and tear on it is negligible. Nothing else broke.
      If it should break or fail in any way you will see an update video.
      All the best
      Denis

    A question: Seeing that the backpack has exposed zippers does (heavy) rain fall eventually go trough the zippers or not?
    To compare my eastpak pineapple model usually holds fairly well against rain fall but eventually even with the covered zippers it falls through or soaks in the bag (wet papers and such).

    Is the external pocket nearest to your back ( the one you never use) isolated thermically? Is it thought to be carying a watter bag like a Camelbak? Couse Since I got a camelbak (initially for mountainbiking) I never hike with bottles anymore, it's just too practical. So It'd be interesing to know if I have that option.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  10 лет назад

      there is not thermical isolation like you would find in a themos can. I guess you could put a thermal shopping bag in there and that would do the trick.
      Fot me, that particular compartiment does not work for a water bladder.

    I have assault pack too.. not mil tec tho... and one thing that bothers me is that the back of it are pretty soft... nothing to support it... so when I put something in the pack it almost does not touch my back.... it just hang of it supported only by shoulder straps and lower back contact... I feel the pack dangeling left and right as I go... very bad... I suspect I bough some knock off or something... It sais in the back: Backpack Assault I, black MFH.IMT.COMP

  • @noscopesallowed8128

    This might be a silly question to ask here, but does anyone know if this pack fits well over a JPC plate carrier? I've been looking for a pack like this with molle webbing on the back so I could attach it straight to my vest, but haven't been able to find anything. I'm mainly worried about it either sliding off of my shoulders(i'm really skinny) or getting in the way of shouldering my rifle.

    Long video to tell us that your issues were all related to over stuffing the bag, causing stress points, and damaging zippers.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  9 лет назад

      Joe C That is the nice part about youtube: you can always check out another video if the one you just saw was not to your liking.
      Why not over stuff the bag? Isn't that how you test your gear? Do you always have just the minimal amount with you?
      If at one point you need to pack more things in your backpack and it breaks, what then? Are you going to say: "Well, it is obviously my fault" and move on or are you going to be annoyed because it failed and you didn't try it out more so you would know before you were at a cabin and now you have to find a way to make it stay closed?
      That is why I post reviews about gear after I use/abuse it. So others will know. And I do enjoy when someone comes along and just tells me that what I do "totally sucks"
      Thanks!
