The latter also has datalink, jamming pods, and a whole bunch of other shit the Israelis cooked up. Tiger IIIs have the capability to fire very modern Python missiles. Brazil operates F-5s with Grifo-F Radar, also capable of firing AMRAAMs (same as the F-5S), although Brazil does not operate the AMRAAM. In these upgraded forms, the F-5 is quite literally a competent BVR fighter, still better than a MiG-29. Unless your talking about the 1970s F-5E variant, which of course doesnt have AIM-120s, because silly goose the AIM-120 came out in the 90s (which is about 3 years after the F-5 was retired from USAF use, although still in USN and USMC use)

Ever since the F-15 incident the missile (who seems to have fully merged its consciousness with the raptor at this point) has been on a bit of a losing streak with the other planes
The thing nobody mentions is Gripen has a hybrid AESA/mechanical radar, so it can lock onto targets behind itself. Likewise, its ECM/detection profile suite is the only one in the world which can just be software updated while its being used in the air without requiring months of certification. As a result, it tends to spot things early, and confuse targets trying to lock onto it. Its weirdly good for its size and price.
I wish SAAB marketed it against other 4.5 Gen fighters rather than the F-35 Could have been a great fighter for countries that buy Western weapons but aren’t necessarily allied with the west

Because almost everyone (like the RAF and USAF) have gone back to centralised air bases to save on costs, those bases are prime targets. No air defence system is impenetrable. And if you've only got a few airfields, losing one even for a few hours is a significant loss of operational capacity. Not to mention damage to maintenance equipment in any destroyed hangars. Even if your aircraft are off the ground, they can't land, they can't be maintained. The Swedish kept with dispersed airfields though, which is smart. Saab's aircraft are designed to be operated from highway airbases. Any flat(ish) stretch of road longer than 800m and wider than 16m is a potential airbase. Literally operating from the side of the road with maybe a few small hardened aircraft shelters hidden in the trees, a few trucks and a much smaller staff number than a proper base. The turn around time for the Gripen is 10 minutes with 1 aircraft technician and 5 conscript mechanics. The entire engine can be replaced in 1 hour using simple tools and hoist to lift the engine, all of which can be done at a highway base. Can you do that with an F-22 Raptor? Or an F-35? Typhoon? I don't think so.
