inside is such an anomaly because given the context of how 2020 affected everyone on earth, its also the most accessible special he's ever released, and it serves as the absolute best jumping point for gathering info on how he views the world and himself which makes what. and make happy so much more impactful
Dude, I've literally shed tears to this multiple times over the past couple years. Because I have problems that aren't as high stakes as Bo Burnam's. But I have problems. Great breakdown of a breakdown, sir. 👍
this song is even sadder after Inside was released. Everything about this song makes me sob. Especially the last verse, the scream at the end and the "I hope your happy".
I've always kicked around the idea in my head that when he says "You can tell them anything if you just make it funny make it rhyme and if they still don't under stand you then you run it one more time" is being spoken from the perspective of someone who was trying to encourage Bo to write more "mainstream" material. He touched on this in the finale of What. where he voices the agent from LA that wants him to write a silly song about Facebook. He has no problem using "My" and "I" when referring to his own opinions and feelings, but he deliberately says "You" as if someone said this to him. When you couple it with the part of the performance where he is blacked out by the rear lights it creates the aura of the entertainer who has no identity and exists purely to make the transaction.
Totally. And also I think he is literally referring to this very song with that line. He repeated the metaphor of wanting to get what you think you want or trying to achieve something and then it being too much or not what you expected. He runs that metaphor 3 times in the song with the Pringles, burrito and then him directly saying it’s the fans/fame that was too much and he can’t handle it. And in case “you” the audience he says he runs it one more time and sings he wouldn’t “have gotten half of this if he knew he couldn’t handle it” to end the song. It’s so tragic, stark and beautiful all at once.
No industry insider would say you can tell the crowd anything, nor care if the crowd understands him. That's Bo talking himself into saying something too personal to use 1st person. He then repeats the chorus, deliberately--he is literally *running it one more time* to try to help us get it. Do we understand that he can't handle what the industry did to him, the pressure that the experts around him didn't warn him about? His LIFE is the messy burrito, stuffed far too full and falling apart. He thanks us and says he hopes we're happy at the end. It's very personal, an apology for leaving, subtle enough to take time to decipher precisely because it is phrased as it is.
I appreciate you putting twitch clips up on yt, I can't catch streams most of the time cause of work and kids but it's nice to not miss some moments, I appreciate it (especially when it's Bo content!)
That door shot from Inside that shows the door cracked with light coming through has to be a nod to when he did the same in Make Happy in the last song and walks out with his "wife and child". I left my thoughts about it in the comments before I saw this.
I've been watching people react to his videos for like the past hour and was literally typing in this request in on Patreon when I got this notification. Perfect timing!
19:33 Another perspective to consider is Bo's view of the audience. He just confessed to everyone that they are partly responsible for his declining mental health and then he tells himself to stop being a pussy and "put on a show". The new lighting illuminates the room which results in Bo seeing every individual member in the audience looking back at him. Bo is nothing but a caricature on stage while the audience is everything to Bo.
I too listen to this song frequently. However, people make way too much of the Pringle can and burrito.... Bo himself ghas said they were just funny situations and that people wrongfully think there's a deeper meaning to it. The breakdown is serious and the ending is heart breaking for sure, and the story he tells is relatable. But there are no metaphors hidden in the first half.
This hits me like it hits you bro. I performed for 6 years in front of crowds that were as small as whoever we brought to the venue to crowds of around 8 to 10,000. I'm OCD and my music was the main focus of my compulsions. Id record the same songs 50 times sometimes and still never release it. The smallest misplaced breath and I would scrap it and start over instead of punching in. The engineers loved me because I would hit every word of my verses like a robot over and over because of how much pressure I put on myself about not wasting their time or mine while in the studio. I eventually started having panic attacks at venues as well to the point I would shiver and my legs could no longer support me. I had one on stage opening for Yo Gotti at a day car show event in 2011 and couldn't remember one word of my song like straight out of a movie. That was my last performance on August 3rd, 2011. My son was born May 1st, 2012 and I haven't had a panic attack since.
I interpreted the Pringle can as him demonstrating that he has the same problems as everyone in the audience. The metaphor to me centers around his mental health. This was a neat way for him to say "I'm just like you guys.", even though he is obviously a celebrity.
To me the Pringle can represents a physical representation of happiness. Hence the reason he wants to have a daughter to fit her hands inside Pringle cans.
My brother met bo, was super kind and generous to him, love bo burnham- just wish him the best. He’s so intelligent, and it’s usually those that feel the most anxiety etc.
I've watched this special well over a hundred times also and its so satisfying seeing someone truly love the same content as you do. It gets me every time. Thank you for reacting to this man 🙌
out of all the reactions. bro you got it. i listen to this all the time since i first head it on his special back then, its sad that 1/20 reacters actually listen. even after the fact lol earned a sub fo sho
The "if they still don't understand it then run it one more time" is also a call back punchline to the song "Repeat Stuff" that was his lead lead single from this stand up special.
The crowd cheering doesn’t feel like they’re happy that Bo is “joking” again.. it feels like they’re acknowledging what he just said in the only way a crowd really can.
I feel like everything else in the video was super on-point, except possibly this. I got a sense that a portion of the crowd was hearing what he had to say about his state of mind, and once he wrapped up that heart-to-heart introspective, they proceeded to cheer him on in acknowledgement and encouragement. It's not a funnies moment, hence probably why (1) not everyone picked up on it, and (2) not everyone who picked up on it felt comfortable being vocal about a serious topic at a comedy show.
i think at that silhouette part, the crowd didn't know whether to applaud, cheer him on, cry, or sit in silence. I know the first time I watched this that "steadily declining mental health line" was my "oh shit" moment and I just sat dumbfounded in tears with deep feelings for him (and my relatable self) for the final minutes of the show (and beyond).
Ive got Make Happy tattooed on my arm. This special helped me just as much as my favorite hip hop artists have. So he earned a spot on my mental health/art sleeve with Mac and Juice and Kendrick.
I’m so glad Bo is finally getting major recognition. We share the same idea that this was never about issues for everyday people, that it’s all about his life and mental well-being. Keep up the great work E3!
Watching Bo Burnham's Happy for the 1st time was a life changing experience for me. I watched it a dozen more times that first week and told every person I spoke that it's a must watch.
I love Bo, I cry every single time I see this. His expression right before his "turkey gobble: and when he says "I hope you;re happy" just breaks me. So vulnerable and sad and such a broken man at this point in his life.... I hope Bo has been able to give himself what he gives us, with his break and time to learn to love himself
The final song he sings on this special after he goes back stage is so good. It’s very simple but actually very deep in its meaning. Touches just as much as can’t handle this, in my opinion.
I always loved him as a comedian. Then i watched the special and heard this song for the first time... I instantly felt guilt and went to check his Socials to see if he was doing okay... "We think we know you" was also one of the first ones that made me rethink his acts.
I listen to this song all the time and every now and then I come back and listen to your breakdown again. By far the best, most insightful breakdown of this song anywhere. Great work
Good breakdown. The lights though are pre-programmed for the entire special. However His vocals are definitely controlled by the board he’s fiddling with.
If I were in that audience I would absolutely not be surprised by something like this from Bo, and I would be cheering through tears because of the sheer artistry and vulnerability of it, not because the hook is catchy and I'm entertained. But he wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I remember how I felt the first time I watched this: the chills, the crying, the awe, respect, and fear for Bo.
This might be the best breakdown I’ve seen. I already knew all about the meaning and what he was saying, but I’d never considered how the production played into it all. Great job!
This is by far the best reaction I’ve seen you do yet. You gave it a Twenty One Pilot breakdown of lyrics. Such an emotional song that most people had no clue the true meaning behind it for him.
I’ve been following Bo since his Words, Words, Words special and man, I just never get sick of any of his stuff. It’s so well written and executed perfectly.
I've been an admirer of Bo's since day one, he's one year older than me so I grew up with his influence. I literally just made the connection from this show to his Inside special. I'm feeling so many emotions I'm actually shaking. Bo is so special for us
lights are really pretty, but i just thought about smth, maybe transitioning to spotlights converging on him or single light was a metaphor his tunneling vision of panic attacks, he literally shows us what he felt
Man, you should do words words words, country music or just more bo, loving this change up, came for rap breakdowns but will be all over every video like this lmao
Bro. Bro! I’ve prob watched this 50 times myself and feel the same way. So nice to hear someone else articulate the emotional impact that it still has on me as well
Yeah bro, I hate to admit that I'm super new to the Bo Burnham train. His most recent special crushed me - Inside was devastating. And honestly - I'm sure you felt this too - it was one of those works that made me recognize how damn high the ceiling on content creation can be. I'm not even jealous it's so good, you know? He's operating at Michael Jordan levels. Anyway, I immediately went back and just binged all his old stuff. This bit makes so much sense as the last singular work (obviously he's put out Eighth Grade since then, but I mean just Bo solo). The lead-in to who he is today is constructed so clearly here. Anyway, really appreciated this video - I'd love to see you do a reaction to his newest special (the last song, if my vote counts for anything). Just followed ya - see ya out there.
Also, I like that, after you react to something he just said, you rewind a little bit so we can see it through the lens you just offered. Makes it much more interesting and I don't see that often in reaction vids. Good move.
No, ALL of his specials are on RUclips for free in full. Aside from Inside which isn’t in it’s entirety due to Netflix stipulations, all of the songs are. He puts his specials on RUclips for free for the exact reason he wrote Art Is Dead. He doesn’t want people who work hard to earn money to spend it on him, he doesn’t feel worthy of it. He just wants to share his art.
Perhaps his intent was to be ridiculous.. but perhaps his subconscious had a different intent of its own? It's seems to be the case based on the events that followed.. and the recent special.. perhaps both work hand in hand?
@@travismunro7376 ruclips.net/video/eOABIabgRCg/видео.html here is the clip. The bit is at 11 minutes and 20 seconds. He seems to be quite dismissive of the statement but I guess you can read into it however you want.
Yo Ernest, would be cool to see twitch chat if you can edit it in so we can see other peoples reactions as well, I think it would help us on youtube to feel more .. integrated
You are still the GOAT when it comes to breakdowns. The line where he says "You can tell them anything if you just make it funny, make it rhyme, And if they still don't understand you, then you run it one more time" followed immediately by him saying "I don't think that I can handle this right now" is genius. He's saying "if you haven't got it yet, I can't handle this! I'm trying to tell you I can't handle this!"
The start with the Pringles is a highly relatable trivial inconvenience. Then he exaggerates how focus we can get on trivial issues. Next he moves into a metaphor discussing how we all seek the "perfect burrito" or a perfect life. We try so hard to achieve this that we chose everything & relies we missed out on the point of a burrito (life). Thus causing our own entangled depression. "I wouldn't have got the lettuce if I knew it would fit." The best part is that while a burrito can have experts, there is no experts of life. We still want to blame someone other than ourselves. Thigh color & lighting is just an extension of him still failing to relinquish control. The monologue to the crowd just drives home how we all make these same mistakes & celebrities make messy burritos too. With failing confidence in his own ability to respect the audiences focus, attention, money, or entrust. "And if they still don't understand you, then you run it 1 more time!" I cry every time I listen to this song. This rant is way more relatable than anything I've seen of Kanye (or most artist).
BROOOoo okay at first I scoffed at your hot take on making metaphor out of the pringles and burrito but dog.... Dog, I think yr fuckin right if i knew I was gonna be bursting at the seams and everything would come uncontrollably spilling out, yeah... Maybe I should've just chilled the fuck out
At 14:50 can we also appreciate the smoothness he has when switching mic hands?!? While also divulging some deeply personal shit??! Yo…the composure…blows my mind. Anyway, haha
I don't think people were cheering because he went back to telling the burrito joke. I think they understood what they were witnessing, and cheering was the only way they could really show their appreciation for it.
Woo i cry every time i hear this song. It breaks my heart. I saw it back when it first came out and was like why are ppl laughing and clapping when I’m fucking crying for this man
I remember the first time I watched this and generally enjoyed the whole special, and then it got this part and suddenly I was like 'oh shit. this dude isn't okay.' it's fantastic though
Man, the "come and watch the skinny kid with the steadily declining mental heath, as he attempts to give you what he can not give himself" line actually hurts my souls so hard. Every time I hear it my chest just squeezes down and I feel half dead.
I haven't seen anyone talk about the door imagery that flashes at the end of Inside. You see the door cracked and he exits. It's a parallel to this Make Happy special where he does the same except now the implications are opposite. He is walking out alone and being locked out instead of meeting a spouse and child.
Went to his first Yeezys tour in Chicago.... It was my birthday weekend and I was working as a travel nurse in Grand Rapids, Michigan ( was a second home from Alabama) that show was terrible y'all... I left before it was over just so I could, solo, find myself to an Uber and back to my hotel l. When I saw this special ending it was almost life changing and I can't help but chuckle knowing I saw Kanye's opening show, in his hometown, to this tour. Mixed emotions. Love Bo. I have such a hard time watching this without crying.
I’ve watched more reactions of this performance than I care to admit. Yours was the first and, honestly, his message had gone over my head just watching his performance. I watch all the other reactions hoping they pick up on the things you point out here and they never do, at least not to the same extent. Took me too long to find you again to rewatch this but, great job, you really opened my eyes to the (not so hidden) messages in his work.
I too watch this at least once a week. I think though now I'm listening to one of his songs specifically from Inside "That funny feeling". I've been a follower of his since right after he started RUclips. I think Bo was telling more than even we can understand. Even something as subtle as the scream is showing a cry for help. I love how you breakdown songs. Imagine getting two producers and musicians like Bo and Ronnie in a room. More importantly, I hope he (Bo) finds a meaning in his comedy for himself more than for the consumers. I felt his pain in all of his songs. I would love more Bo songs if you can break them down and would enjoy it. Always a pleasure watching you Ernest :] EDIT: I'm about to watch your Inside 1 hour review video. Please do more Bo though :)
I sent this original video to my entire family about a year ago telling them "This kid is the greatest comic genius of our time" and my siblings loved it, and my parents both said it was super weird and not funny at all. Killer thing to do a reaction video on man.
Please bro do a breakdown for "Are you happy?" , the ending song for the special. Imo the best thing out of the special, it still gets me even to this day. Keep up the great work, love people giving attention to this underated genious, plus it fits your breakdowns perfectly.
This is honestly the best reaction I have personally seen for this song. I have never thought about those metaphors as deep as that before. But yo that hits totally different knowing that. The ending already hit as it was, and once I rewatch honestly bo is a genius. Real shiz, last part of this song first time hearing brought me to tears cuz I knew that feeling he was describing.
I'm hella like you bruh, "this part is SO good Jeff", yes, i just legit be trying to show folks hella bo burnham shit like YO shut up listen, no seriously put your phone down listen
To those unfamiliar with the Kanye “rants” or “visionary streams of consciousness” from the 2013-2016 time frame, the instrumentation in the background is remade to resemble Kanye’s song Runaway. Kanye would usually stop mid show after Runaway to have these “streams” of thought or “rants.” Runaway is a “Greek Tragedy” of a song because how Kanye was able to build up the “d-bag” and even though he didn’t like it at times, he embraced it. Kanye worked long and hard on his career to make it. This is masterful art that Bo used Runaway to tell this story
20:43 I don’t think they were cheering because of his return to the funny burrito lines. I think many people shut up during his personal moments out of respect or something similar. And they then cheered and clapped because that’s just the curse of the performer; The only way for a crowd to give you supportive feedback, which is probably what many people wanted to signal to him, is through claps and cheers. But claps and cheers aren’t a meaningful hug, or an understanding gaze. They’re just simple sounds and they can’t really express anything profound. There’s so much to say about the de facto wall between a crowd and a performer. And considering it while watching this makes it more sad.
Ohhh cool I like your perspective! I also feel like it’s a “careful what you ask for because you just might get it” while also feeling betrayed by those in the industry who he felt should’ve warned him but didn’t. 😳
When I first saw Bo's Can't Handle This Video, the moment where the lights come in and he's breaking down the song for the real talk is where I started having alarm bells in my head. You can see the tenseness in the muscles around his forehead and brow, jaw, and neckline. As someone who has panic attacks due to a depressive disorder, I know those signs. My brain was screaming at me "get him off the stage." I'm pretty sure that was when the panic attack was starting, and the little silly nonsense sound he makes definitely seems like something done to get over the anxiety. It is from this point on that he's legitimately having a panic attack on stage. If I had been in the crowd, I would probably have been removed at that point because you can bet I would have approached the production crew on the sides and been begging and pleading that they stop and get him offstage for his own health. The monologue just emphasizes why he needed off the stage for 5 years.
Superb Job Ernest. Thanks for helping me see clearly the lengths Bo Burnham goes to entertain, fascinate, and humor us but after seeing this insightful review I would become very happy if I one day learn he were feeling well and was happy. Thank you for this @thethirdernest . Amazing stuff.
I feel like this hits so much harder now after he took a 5 year break to deal with his anxiety and ESPECIALLY after Inside.

lights are really pretty, but i just thought about smth, maybe transitioning to spotlights converging on him or single light was a metaphor his tunneling vision of panic attacks, he literally shows us what he felt
Good move.
Thank you for actually looking at this song at a deeper meaningful level than most other reaction channels. Well done! ❤
Bo has confirmed that the pringle can and burrito thing was not a metaphor for anything and was just meant to be ridiculous
😂 Cracks me up that Bo can do that to people though. Amazin
Art is open to interpretation, regardless if it was his intent or not the metaphor is still eerily powerful.
@@travismunro7376 lmao the man said it's nothing and you still reaching💀💀💀
Yo Ernest, would be cool to see twitch chat if you can edit it in so we can see other peoples reactions as well, I think it would help us on youtube to feel more .. integrated
You should hop on twitch and catch a stream! They’re great! 😄
@@TK5280. its usually my sleepy time when Ernest is streaming I've only been on like 5 times and miss so many cuz I'm asleep
Best breakdown I've seen of this song by far great job.
Yesss i love song from Bo Burnham and I'm glad you're a fan of him
The start with the Pringles is a highly relatable trivial inconvenience.
"And if they still don't understand you, then you run it 1 more time!"
I cry every time I listen to this song. This rant is way more relatable than anything I've seen of Kanye (or most artist).
bo already stated there is no meaning behind th efirst 2 bits they are just silly complaints to set up the 3rd verse
BROOOoo okay at first I scoffed at your hot take on making metaphor out of the pringles and burrito but dog.... Dog, I think yr fuckin right
if i knew I was gonna be bursting at the seams and everything would come uncontrollably spilling out, yeah...
I saw it back when it first came out and was like why are ppl laughing and clapping when I’m fucking crying for this man
Thank you for this masterpiece of breakdown
Finally found someone willing to look deeper into this, and who appreciates the layers.
Subbed to your Twitch! I've also watched this video 100+ times, and I've watched you 100+ times = Perfect combo. Moar Bo please!
Just discovered this recently by Bo (I know right where have i been) and for some reason every day since I've played the video...
This one out of all his songs, just breaks my heart for him. That "I hope you're happy" at the end gives me chills every time I hear it.
I haven't seen anyone talk about the door imagery that flashes at the end of Inside. You see the door cracked and he exits. It's a parallel to this Make Happy special where he does the same except now the implications are opposite. He is walking out alone and being locked out instead of meeting a spouse and child.
This was an insane breakdown. I’m glad you did this and posted it here.
MORE BO BURNHAM PLEASE. HE needs his appreciation man
Watched all his specials after watching your video.
All I can is - thank you, and why did I do this to myself?? 😭😂
Love to see someone nerd out and love Burnham for all the aspects of his performance. I love everything he makes.
This is my first time ever hearing this and your breakdown made me cry. Makes me want to give Bo a hug. Great video!
Always a pleasure watching you Ernest :]
EDIT: I'm about to watch your Inside 1 hour review video. Please do more Bo though :)
BRO YOU DONT KNOW HOW MUCH I WANTED THIS REACTION
I literally have a picture of my daughter with her entire arm in a Pringle’s can and I took the picture because of this special. 😂😂
I sent this original video to my entire family about a year ago telling them "This kid is the greatest comic genius of our time" and my siblings loved it, and my parents both said it was super weird and not funny at all. Killer thing to do a reaction video on man.
its crazy how this guy is a comic but there are some songs that have such deep meaning behind them.
I would love a reaction series to more of Bo Burnhams stuff.
Im.recently a new fan ....thanku so much wonderful reaction love this much love and god bless x
@TheThirdErnest Bruh, glad to hear I'm not the only loser who couldn't handle this song and had to listen to it 100+ times 😂😂
This reaction was amazing! Dude, this shit is surreal! You could tell he was done. This might be the best thing I’ve seen on RUclips in a while
Please bro do a breakdown for "Are you happy?" , the ending song for the special. Imo the best thing out of the special, it still gets me even to this day. Keep up the great work, love people giving attention to this underated genious, plus it fits your breakdowns perfectly.
Great reaction and review!
Crushed this analysis. Bo is an absolute genius and I’m with you on probably listening to this 100 times at this point.
I'm hella like you bruh, "this part is SO good Jeff", yes, i just legit be trying to show folks hella bo burnham shit like YO shut up listen, no seriously put your phone down listen
Great explanation of this genius at work.
Finally going the Bo route, I can't wait for you to see the songs he made and continues to make.

I don’t think they were cheering because of his return to the funny burrito lines.
And considering it while watching this makes it more sad.
love these dives into Bo's work. 💗
Dude is a genius! And sadly. Geniuses often suffer.
Mans is in a league of his own I've watched all of his specials at the end you always have a moment of self reflection
