    I personally really liked it. Just wish they gave the witches more individual personalities. You can see the redhead on the right has one, constantly smiling, but she never really gets the chance to do anything with it. Giant shame, if you ask me. Overall the movie looks really good, set-wise. It could've had some more subtle CGI here and there, but after a while I sorta got used to it, so you won't hear me complain too much.

    One of the things I prefer about this remake is that the GHW and the other witches have a rapport similar to a military general and her troops. In the 1990 film, the witches were cheering and fawning over the GHW like fans of a celebrity whereas here they walk/march in unison, they all dress in black and stand up when she enters the dining room, etc. It gives the impression that their habit of eradicating children is more of a soldier's mission rather than a hobby.

    • @whoanelly8403
      @whoanelly8403 3 года назад +2

      That's kind of what I dislike about this one to be honest... The fact that they don't act like normal women. In the original it was way more subtle and they really tried to blend in with normal human beings. In this one they feel so detached from that, making it way too obvious that they are not human.

    • @jaredliew998
      @jaredliew998 3 года назад +1

      @@whoanelly8403 true...though in my opinion, they acted more serious and stoic to show they took their 'job of preventing cruelty to children' seriously to any unassuming humans. They weren't incapable of acting nice and polite (i.e. when Saoirse and the GHW invited Bruno in and when the GHW gave chocolate to Alice), but rather only appeared nice when it counted. I thought the 1990 witches cheering and giggling over meeting the GHW seemed a bit weird given that they were supposedly RSPCC members greeting their superior. Sure, it may not be unusual if some of them were new witches/employees but all of them acting that way seemed off, given that at least some of them would have gotten used to meetings like this before.

    • @whoanelly8403
      @whoanelly8403 3 года назад +2

      @@jaredliew998 I agree, they weren't incapable of acting nice, but they didn't really try either. For example, the scene where the GHW (Anne) called mr. Stringer to her balcony and ordered him to remove all the children from the beach. That was weird to me, because why would she do that if she is the chairwoman of RSPCC? Her hate for children shines through a bit too much. It was different to me when the GHW (Anjelica) gagged at saying the word 'children'.
      Now, for the part where they idolize the GHW in the 1990 movie I think you just have to look at it differently. Anjelica once said, in an interview, that she was basically playing Hitler. So there's this hierarchy among the witches (High witches in every country with the GHW on top). The GHW is their ultimate leader and she demands that kind of respect. They are also not allowed to contact witches from other countries, so they're all part of a select group of witches that know each other. Once a year they have these meetings and that's the only time they get to meet their leader. So that's why I get that they are so excited to see her. They want approval and seek her guidance. That's how I see it anyway.
      That said, I love both movies. I think the 1990 one is superior, but both are fun to watch. The 2020 movie stays more true to the book (especially the ending), but had a bit too much CGI for my taste, while the 1990 movie had a better portrayal of the witches themselves, especially the way they portrayed the GHW (at least in my opinion).

    • @jaredliew998
      @jaredliew998 3 года назад +2

      @@whoanelly8403 I admit I didn't really think about that (witches not being allowed to contact each other.) Thanks for the clarification. Maybe that's why the GHW keeps the witch groups separate. She's just as classist and racist as Hitler.
      On a separate note, what I prefer about the 1990 witches were that they weren't hesitant about squishing and killing vermin, be it babies or children or mice. The 2020 witches were all scared and freaking out when trying to squish a mouse-ified Bruno which I thought was either out of character or why the GHW considers them, 'good-for-nothing VUUURRRMMMS!!!'
      I also agree that Anjelica Huston was the scarier GHW; I like Anne Hathaway but her GHW seemed to be a slapstick butt-monkey prone to amusing injuries (crushing her hand with a mallet, getting her fingers cut by the vent fan, etc.). I also felt that the only reason she had a single toe on each foot while the other witches had none was just so she could get hurt and transformed into a rat.

    • @whoanelly8403
      @whoanelly8403 3 года назад +1

      @@jaredliew998 The part of them not being allowed to contact others was in the book, I believe. But yeah, she really is a dictator in that regard. She wants to be the ultimate leader. She also uses her laser eyes at least once in every meeting to make sure the other witches fear her. The build up to this moment was way better in the 1990 movie. The witch that got killed had a legitimate reason to question the orders they were getting. Also, she really feared for her life while the GHW was casting her spell. In the 2020 movie this moment was so sudden, without anything leading up to it. I thought it was funny that the GHW came down to sit on the stage while saying that it was actually a good question, though.
      I get what you're saying and I agree, the 1990 witches really seemed to have fun in killing the innocent. Pure evil! When Bruno was about to turn into a mouse you could see how excited the GHW was. When it was happening all the witches had the best time of their lives. In the 2020 version Bruno was very rude and greedy by saying 'Gimme, gimme, gimme'. The old Bruno seemed a little shy at first and was waiting patiently for his chocolate, but got a bit suspicious in the end. I felt more sorry for him than for the new Bruno.
      I also agree that Anne's GHW had that slapstick factor. I was very disappointed that they made her this way. Anjelica had class and elegance as a human and seemed untouchable as the GHW, Anne was more like a cartoon character. I like Anne Hathaway and she did a great job, though! I also think you're right about her toes, they just put them there for the ending.
      I also found it strange that in the 2020 version the potion was all over the room in ice buckets, while in the 1990 version it was cleverly hidden inside a book.

But when she plays the real form of Grand High Witch, she makes a really hard to understand accent. Someone said that she thought the Grand High Witch said "bitch" instead of "witch". This Grand High Witch will scare children for sure, but for older people, it will be too silly.

      Because people want to watch a movie and be entertained rather than be virtue signaled to death.

      @@seaneinhorn4258 This ‘ only entertainment' has real world consequences like bullying, assaults and discrimination in housing. The group 'Changing Faces' in the UK has some great resources on the impact of this in the real world. I personally can't use public transport in my area because the majority of the time I'll have behavior towards me that no one else would put up with, and I'm not going to educate people on. If the only time people see scars is in the context of evil, then what follows is actually what happens, we get treated as if we are evil.

      @@jogsingumboots guess what? If people are going to watch a movie they're going to watch a movie. Education and resources exist. Incessant endless virtue signaling will do nothing but turn people off.
      Those who will seek to know we'll know. The information is out there. And if you are such a pea-brain that you can't discern between a fictitious witch and a person in real life than that is your cross to bear. But I'm not going to feel bad about it. Go complain about it on your Tumblr. Which I'm certain you have.

      @@seaneinhorn4258 It's not virtue signaling if our safety is at risk. I used to travel with bus passengers who didn’t 'wish to know'. Glad you don't find the need to plan your day around these issues. This type of storytelling is lazy... there are so many better more diverse stories to tell. PS I want to turn people off what is lazy and wrong, and turn them onto great stories that don't add to old bizarre and harmful stereotypes in the name of 'just entertainment' I wish I could just watch, but I'm reminded daily of the real life consequences.
