    Most children are self-centered. It's human nature. The idea is that you're supposed to grow out of it. Donald Drumpf clearly hasn't.
    You have to have self-esteem ("I can do this!"), but you also have to be self-aware ("I'm not so good at this; let's see how I can improve!"). And you also have to consider other people while you're at it.

They refuse to believe that they themselves might be the reason that they don't get everything they feel that they should be getting. Okay, Bill is about 75% right on this. Yes, many people today are extremely self-centered and arrogant, but not everybody. There are still people at the other end of the spectrum who are so humble that they doubt themselves often and have very low self-esteem that does harm them psychologically in the long-term. You wouldn't notice these people, but they do still exist. I can understand why Bill is upset at how arrogant people are, but we can't forget the other side of this as well.

      That's true. And what makes this segment somewhat unfair is that normal children are naturally selfish. The point is that you're supposed to grow out of it. Whether you grew up with strict parents or in a "no rules" household, it's still possible to become a well-adjusted adult. It's still possible to develop a strong sense of empathy and compassion for others, and to learn to act selflessly. Whst makes Donald Trump different from everyone else who grew up as the spoiled brat child of a New York millionaire, is that on top of growing up in a home where he was just given everything he could ever want, and allowed to do whatever he wanted, Donald Trump also at some point developed Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which made him incapable of outgrowing that childish attitude of selfishness, and which prevented him from developing that sense of empathy and compassion which every well-adjusted member of society has.

      +CardsNHorns04 No, you shouldn't "love" yourself, you should *accept" yourself. Being realistic about the areas you are skilled in and where you fall short will always lead to genuine humility and honesty. When you truly "love" yourself, you will constantly be looking for ways to validate your character which more often than not are built upon nothing valuable. However, I will say that, if you have a high opinion of yourself, it _IS_ possible to act humble around other people, but it'll almost never be genuine. For instance, you could be driven to act kind around someone else for the recognition it would give you from your peers.

    I love Bill, watch him all the time. I do agree with much of this but I disagree with "EVERY time a parent takes the side of the child and not the teacher, or shut up when adults talk." I am a 52 year old father of a 16 year old. My son is right sometimes and teachers wrong - I have experienced it. My son is thoughtful, kind and respectful all his life, he earned my loyalty and trust in his word. I also grew up in the era of kids are supposed to be seen not heard...that is bullshit. I find kids are people...some suck and some are very intelligent and intuitive. I treat them as I do all humans, listen and respect the ones that deserve it.

    When I was in college it was possible for less than 10% of the grades on any given piece of work to be "A's". If the curve at the top was steep enough (some smart guy scores an 87 and the next highest score is 39 and then it falls into the 20's) there could be two "A" grades out of a class of 234 people. I am not sure what has gone wrong since then. I passed classes by the narrowest of margins and am proud of it because I know that the people who inflicted the damage where that much better than I was at that particular topic. When they came to my department to take their mandatory beating (ahem, required classes) the roles were reversed. When did it become "OK" to give more than half the people who showed up "A's"? The course work is not challenging enough if the wheat can't be separated from the chaff.

Merely existing in his own body is an ongoing battle to avoid self-loathing. Like the bratty child, he craves attention to try to prove to himself that if he can get people to look at him, then maybe he is worth something.
    When two people are in a relationship and one of them feels the need to say, "By the way, I love you so very very very much. You're the most amazing thing in the world. You're just so awesome and amazing and I love you love you love you," every other minute, we all know that relationship isn't going to last. Or we're witnessing two people on a hormone kick about to hit the peak and come crashing down.
    It's one thing to affirm, it's another to exaggerate in crazed desperation. Just like people who are in deep, long-lasting, healthy relationships, a person who loves himself doesn't need to go around saying it all the time, especially to a camera. It's the same thing with confidence. Those who purport to be confident are often the least confident when put to the test. Real confidence, just like real love, is self-defeating if it needs constant affirmation.
    So in that sense, yes, the "self-esteem movement" is bogus, as you described it. People shouldn't be raised feeling like they need constant affirmation, whether from themselves or from others. The whole point of love is that it's a bond. I mean, do most of us go around telling our friends "hey friend, you're my best friend," all the time? I doubt it. Do two magnets sit there going, "Hey, we're still connected, right? Maybe I better buy you flowers just to be sure."
    I've got nothing against demonstrations of affectation, but I think the word we're looking for is self-obsession, fueled by deep-seated self-loathing. Not self-love. Just like the stalker is creepy because their object of affection is not returning the interest, the self-obsessed person is creepy because we know that on the inside their object of affection is not returning the interest. They are splintered and broken, and cannot convince themselves that they are worthy of the praise they try to shower on themselves.
    And the very idea of allowing a person like that to have power? It's like giving your stalker the keys to your house, or buying an alcoholic a brewery and putting it next to a schoolyard.

    This is a big part of why we can't have real debate in this country. Too many people don't understand that you can respectfully disagree. I can think that your opinion is stupid without calling you an idiot. We don't need to all agree on everything. We're not fragile snowflakes.

    It would be interesting to study the kids who didn't have parents that bought into this and see how they as a group responded to growing up around a majority of other kids raised this way. my parents weren't like that and the whole thing when i was at school felt weird and uncomfortable and condescending. although i didn't know what condescending was when i was six. it was also annoying to put up with the other kids who bought into it.

  • @Karpify
    @Karpify 8 лет назад +4

    Writing a note in your kid's lunch and telling them you love them is not the problem. Every child needs to feel loved. The problem is parents telling their kids that they are the best no matter what they do, or that any opinion they hold is reasonable, or that by "being good" they deserve the things they get, whereas people who don't "achieve" in life are there because they didn't try hard enough.

      +ekene paschal I don't know about ALL schools, but I really disagree with his assessment of grades at Yale. I posted another comment with citations and stuff that I'm too lazy to reproduce, but basically the incoming freshmen SAT scores in 1979 were lower than in 2015. It may even be the case that, although the number of applicants to Yale has increased, the number of students they admit hasn't, making it more competitive. If admission is harder, it would make sense that the grades at Yale would be higher, since a better caliber of student is admitted. That's not to deny that grade inflation happens, though.
      Also, why pick on college grads? They're not voting for Trump.
      You may be right about US schools overall, though. I don't know about those stats.

      10% in the 60s and 62% now? That's quite a leap, especially when the number of students they admit has remained stagnant over the years. Either there is a serious case of grade inflation, or students taking easy course for the sole purpose of boosting their GPA.

    The more I think about it the more backwards Bill seems to have got it. Trump doesn't have too much self esteem. He has too little. People with self esteem don't need to see their name in giant letters on a building, they don't rip others down to make themselves look better, they don't lash out at their critics, they don't brag about their sucess. Besides, Trump is older than the self-esteem movement which started in 1969 when Trump was already 23 years old.

    • @georgekatalinski4546
      @georgekatalinski4546 8 лет назад +4

      +mena3976 Trump's preacher as a kid was Norman Vincent Peale. He wasn't necessarily part of the self-esteem movement, per se, but he was big into a similar mode of thinking. He wrote a book called, "The Power of Positive Thinking". Trump grew up on a steady diet of this stuff. It's not that he naturally has low or high self-esteem, it's that he deliberately expels self-doubt from his thought processes. This could very well make you a good salesman, entertainer or self-promoter, as Trump no doubt is. However, it leaves much to be desired when working with details and trying to understand nuances, as Trump seems to struggle with a good deal.The "self-esteem movement" may have only appeared in public education under that name relatively recently, but the "new thought movement" has been around for over a century and preaches a very similar dogma in some places.

    My mom did everything he said not to do, but I somehow turned out OK. I never did it, but she would have never let me throw a tantrum over nothing or be rude to people.Even though she did all those things and it gave me good self esteem I never thought I was better than anyone. I don’t know why doing all those things worked on me but makes other kids brats and think that they’re entitled to have anything they want. I think the only reason I didn’t turn out like that what is that my mom is a kind woman who puts other people first. She may have done All those things he said not to do but she also taught me to treat other people as I would like to be treated. She showed me by example how to be a good person. She is a amazing mom. She also always treated me like my opinion mattered. She never would have told me to be quiet and that the grown-ups are talking. One of the best examples of her great parenting is that we were at a store and I asked the woman who works there a question and she at first ignored me and then was rude because I was just three years old. I asked my mom “Can’t she treat me like that?” And my mom said “No sweetheart, she can’t” Even kids are entitled to respect, especially if they are being respectful to the person.
