Thankyou so much for putting on this video, and for the compassion you show in your voice, my dad grew up in Holywood fostered by a family named Johnson, they maybe there also.

Hi Jenny. It's lovely to hear from you about my wee amateur video. Thank you so much for your kind words. There are two graveyards in Holywood. One is the old Priory graveyard down beside the Bangor dual carriageway. The other one is Redburn cemetery and it indeed likely that the Johnsons are buried there. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

Hi Paula. Thanks for taking the time to post in and say hello. Redburn is a very interesting graveyard full of history. It is always good to remember the folks that passed along the way before us. 'All that lie here loved, were loved and are remembered.' And very true too. These people had lives and loves. I hope you enjoyed and learnt from my efforts. thanks for your support. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

Hi, Tom. I love your cemetery videos. Exploring cemeteries and reading all the dates is one of my favourite hobbies. I'm particularly fond of the City Cemetery and the Shankill Graveyard because it's so old.

Hi PIMA, Thanks for posting me your encouraging comments. I need all the encouragement I can get! lol I find looking into the past fascinating and grave headstones often give hints of or tell a vey interesting story. I enjoy unearthing these kinds of stories and letting others know too. I have walked the length and breadth of both the City and the Shankhill Road cemeteries. I have made many videos in both. They hold many many amazing stories too that I believe we should not allow to die. Best wishes

Hi Michael, Graveyards or cemeteries are such sad but special places of family loss for us all. As said, many people come, everyday in life back, to where their wives or husbands were buried. I was ripping mad when our 'authorities' here took the drastic draconian, step, of locking up cemeteries, depriving people of this daily or weekly duty and connection. They did this to supposedly, 'safguard; us from this virus they said! Remarkably they allowed people to 'hit the bottle' though, by keeping the off- licences open! How ridiculous!
As a good Catholic you say a prayer for the dead souls there and as a good Prod I'll say a prayer for the living relatives. So we'll have them all covered! Best wishes Michael I hope you are in good health. My old hip is almost normal again. Praise God!

Fascinating stuff as ever Tom, you never know what you learn sonetimes. Have you ever been to Slans Graveyard near Kearney Bay National Trust fishing cottages (which in itself is well worth one of your videos)? This old grave has magnificent views and history and dates from an old 1st century ringfort and 14th century Church. In the area near Nendrum I would also recomend a visit to Cooey wells which dates back to and beyond the time of the vikings at Strangford.

Yes Scott we have been down that direction but I need to go again and film more! I knew about the village but not the graveyard. I knew of cooey wells but I'm afraid they need a video visit too! Thanks for this excellent information and future film ideas.

Totally agree that cemeteries are calm, contemplative spaces worth visiting. They separated the graves here in Antrim in the very recent past, though not sure if still do today, Always fascinating places to explore. Take care.

Hi Tom. Thank you for posting your walk around Redburn Cemetery. My father was born and raised in Holywood. He moved to Canada when he was in his late twenties (he passed 10 years ago). His parents, my grandparents, are buried in Redburn Cemetery. I met my grandmother briefly when I was very young. My grandfather had already passed away before I was born. I didn't know where my grandparents were buried until recently -- I found a blurry old photo of their grave with the name Redburn Cemetery written on the back. If you ever go for another walk around the cemetery, would you keep an eye out for their headstone? Their last name was ROBERTSON, and their first names were Eva Jane and John (Jock)...There is a brick wall in the background. Thanks! 😊

Hi TP. Great to hear from you and that you have strong links to Redburn Cemetery. I am very aware that people overseas have relatives buried in the cemeteries I film. This is one of the reasons I do these videos. So so many people emigrated to Canada, USA, S Africa, Australia, New Zealand, from these shores. I live about 6 miles from Holywood. So it's not far. Could you give me an approximate date as to when some of your folks died? If not no worries. The fact that there is a brick wall behind the grave is a huge help in locating the grave. I will make a point of looking the next time I'm there. PS I take it that you are living in Canada. What town or region? Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills of Northern Ireland

@@TomMcClean Hi Tom -- Thanks for your response! I think my grandmother died in the mid-70s. My dad moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada when he was in his late twenties. In the 60s, he and my mom settled along the Scarborough Bluffs, in a lovely suburb just outside of Toronto. When I was 8 my dad took us to Ireland to see our grandmother. He took us to where he lived as a child on Park Drive, and I also remember going to the Twisel "Kissing" Bridge (which I noticed you have a video about). My dad's longtime childhood friend owned the bakery Bell's of Holywood -- So we had a memorable visit there 😋 I'd love to send you the fuzzy photo that I have of my grandmother's grave in Redburn Cemetery. Is it possible for me to email it to you? Thanks! Tara

Very interesting info about some of the people buried there, I must go walk about next time I’m there, my mother and father are buried there interesting fact about my father is that he was a survivor of the sinking of HMS Prince of Wales during ww2 but couldn’t beat cancer and died aged 59.
    Thanks for the info .

It's a fascinating place Silverfox especially when you manage to get a wee bit deeper into the stories behind some of the few words or insignia on the grave headstones. That is interesting about your dad and his survival story from the HMS Prince of Wales in the south China sea. My father in law died of cancer in February past. It is a horrible thing. So much money emphasis and resources being put into covid while other folks tratment is sidelined. I can't understand it!
' In her final battle 1941, which was three days after the attack on Pearl Harbour, she was sunk alongside the battlecruiser HMS Repulse by Japanese bombers when they became the first capital ships to be sunk solely by air power on the open sea.'
Before that she fought against the Bismark. Wow!
I may go back to Redburn because I missed a lot of other graves. I love the old stories. People should know the folks that lie in front of them.

That looks like a peaceful place surrounded by all of those trees. I notice that some of the graves have what looks like a vault in front and are covered with rock while others have just grass. Can you tell me about that? Our vaults are lowered and the casket placed inside. Is that due to your rocky terrain? Also I’m with you on the wars. There hasn’t been one worth the blood shed since WW2 and even still, they are all a shame.

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean  4 года назад

There are no vaults in this cemetery Greg. Some of the older ones have vaults elsewhere though. The grave is simply dug out of the earth using a JCB now and then coverered over with soil until a headstone is made and enscribed. New graves are only alowed a headstone now in many cemeteries. The older ones were allowed granite surrounds.
You might be interested in the following video on mausolea I filmed in a local graveyadr at Knockbreda. ( knock means hill in the Irish )These graves have multiple bodies interred and are all below ground in decaying coffins in the vault. ( like a crypt ) this is not typical of Irish burial procedures. Mausola were coped form similar vaults in Calcutta India where this was common practice . Belfast merchandts would have traded with Cacutta bringing in tea. They saw these mausoleum graves and the rich people copiedd their style.

I might have to move another electric line though. Just looking forward to having this done and getting things put back where they belong. Then I'll have to do the duct work and some additional work in the basement, but that can be done in time.

Hi Tom,Other interesting cemetery walk and I looked up the Sydenham air display of 1956 when squadron leader Wally Runciman was killed.
His plane was a SHORT SB 6 SEAMEW MR2, it was owned by the Short Brothers apparently it entered a slow roll at 100 ft the nose fell and Runciman was trying to finish with a half loop, but he had no height and the nose struck the runway. There were rumours that it had been material failure but the Accident Investigation Board did not confirm this. John T Davis an irish film maker included actual film of the crash in his own film THE UNCLE JACK 1996.
This was a film about Jack McBride Neill who was John T Davis'is maternal uncle and he designed many of Northern Ireland's cinemas.Cheers C.

Hey TT no worries. The innocent peoples of these Middle Eastern countries have been blitzed literally by opposing forces from all sides and none. ( robber thieves etc ) They live a precarious life if you would call it living. I have read of whole families being wiped out/deliberately massacred leaving one or two survivors. Rapes etc etc How would you cope with such a living hell!
I understand where you are coming from as regards the saint wording on the headstone The saint on this guys tombstone actually has a particular meaning. I was intrigued by it too. So I dug a wee bit deeper. This guy was brought up in the Mormon faith. I understand saint is a general name they refer to all their people by like brother or pilgrim.
I'll try and get back over to Redburn and get the browning up of the leaves in a week or two when it will be outstanding. Take care.
