Learning all this Key/Position stuff has been challenging. Especially a beginner 5 months in. Can’t wait for the day my brain has the “Now I get it” moment.
I was trying to find what harmonica would be best for a song in C#m and stumbled across this. It coincides with other stuff I've found saying an A harp in 3rd or B harp in 5th would be best. But I'm curious... why are those recommended instead of an E harp, since its the relative major?
Yeah great question. It's just to do with style and bending ability. It might be easier to get the notes using the relative major harp, but you won't necessarily be able to make it sound as rich and emotional because of the layout of the notes. Definitely feel free to give it a go though!
goodness... i gad no idea.... I am sending another big lot of harmoncas to the Yezidi in the tentcamps in Kurdistan *I lived there last year) and had no no no idea.. TThis lot were very inexpensive and now I noticed they are in the key of G, so I thought: I better look up how and what, so I can leave instructions with the Math teacher in the camp who will distribute them.. @@Learntheharmonica
To funny Liam! I about lost it when I read that comment! lol 😂😂. I guess I better check out your music channel too and make sure you really play the harmonica and haven’t been duping us all! 😂😂. Anyway thanks for all the lesson videos! I’m a beginner and have learned a lot from them. Thanks again!
Hi Liam ! I've been subscribing to your RUclips channel for over four years ago . Each of the videos you post is watched with attention and interest by every member of my family . I’m listening to what you are saying but l’m completely confused what you are talking about. I just don’t understand/comprehend any of it. I just pick up a harmonica and play it. I know about getting the correct key to play along with whatever type of music is playing and just keep picking up different harmonicas to find the correct key to use. All of these “different positions” you are talking about makes no sense to me at all. 😩 I’ve been playing harmonicas for 63 years. Played in numerous bands, can play many different genres of music and have made 2 CD’s. I can’t read music, l just play by ear. For me trying to comprehend what you are talking about completely evades me. It is just too technical for me. I hear a tune, l pick up a harmonica and try each key, until l get the one that goes good with the music and that’s it for me, simple and easy. I wish l could grasp/understand your explanations of playing in “different keys/positions” but l can’t. 😊
Most people start with C... I would recommend looking at liams video for piano man (which requires a 'C' Harp) and maybe his tutorial for Mannish Boy... (that's how I started afew years ago) and then you can slowly expand your song library and Harmonica collection 👍 Good luck
Hi So I'm playing a Bob Dylan song from Blood on the Tracks in E but I cant seem to get the same tonality as the record ? could you help me with this please ? Thank's in advance , Peter
in modes for Your chart is confusing . The modes, if you read key of A in mode section you would get a E harp and if 2nd position for Key of A you would get a D harp. Confusing Why?
Wow, I have never been able to wrap my head around reading music in any regard, but your description and the pacing with which you explained this made sense to me. This is so eye-opening. Thank you!!!!
You could check out my latest series on rock harmonica riffs. These are all songs that have a specific part for harmonica (but the whole song isn't just harmonica)
I must be daft- so your chart dos not indicate if a band or in my case a backing track is paying in key of F ….what harmonicas should I have at the ready I’ve knowticed it’s hard to stay with a melody if I blow into a F harmonica playing along a F KEY backing track
It all depends on the position you want to play. If you want to play in 2nd position (the most likely), go down the '2nd position' column to F, then across to the harp key of Bb. I hope this makes sense!

Just bought a 10 hole in c is that a good start point?
Yep, a very good starting point and the exact type of harmonica I recommend for beginners. Welcome to the club!

Yes I had the same, it might be a little bit too advanced, as I am a beginner cheers
Hello, very good video and helpful for me! Thanks!
Omg I know nothing...
He said a lot without saying any of the important things. I fell asleep listening to him.
I picked up a B because the C is too high for me and my other instruments
Can we hear them? I clicked on your video to hear them.
Todo un reto, aprender toda esta teoría!!!!

Bro.....Is Ab key harmonica is also called A Flat harmonica ?
Yes, the 'b' represents a "flat" because it looks quite like a flat symbol. The actual symbol is ♭
Ok what about a song that has a part that uses a harmonica? I don’t want to do the whole song just the part that uses harmonica. 😜
You could check out my latest series on rock harmonica riffs. These are all songs that have a specific part for harmonica (but the whole song isn't just harmonica)
super confusing
What about minor keys? Say A minor? What harmonica would be used
Thanks Liam!! Always helpful!
No worries! 😎
Now I have charts for the notes for each key of harp so do I use that to figure out the root notes for each position for each key
Yes you can do 😎
You are assuming I know what it means to be at different positions 😂
Good point! You might like my video all about positions: ruclips.net/video/4qS_PecuehA/видео.htmlsi=t0Im_c7dX1MDACIt (includes a free pdf summary)
I picked up a Gm harmonica...not sure what key on my guitar to play in to use this harmonica. Any help?
If it's a Lee Oskar, they label them in the key you want to play them so you can play your guitar in Gm and use the Gm harp.
@@Learntheharmonica is Gm the only key I can play a Gm harp in?
All of them
Liam,
What did you do . . .
Just delete my long post from yesterday??
