Notes:
• I meant vacuum distillation at the end of the video and it sounds like I say sodium methoxide but I really say sodium ethoxide!
In case you don't know, DMAE is used in the synthesis of diphenhydramine (Benadryl). This will be used in a future video to make Benadryl so I can meet the hat man. This is the first step to finding out who he is!

Why didn't you go the ethanolamine+formaldehyde+formic acid route? It would have been both cheaper and more interesting.
What is the next step? If you intend to make dimethylchloroethylamine please be very careful, this stuff is extremely corrosive, toxic and volatile, it's basically mustard gas.
If I were making DPH I would do it by reacting N-acetyl/succinoyl/phtaloyl ethanolamine with benzhydryl bromide/chloride and a base, then hydrolysis and dimethylation with CH2O+HCOOH.

Ah now I see exactly what you meant! If you do this again, try using methanol. There’s a greater difference in boiling point, so you shouldn’t have the same issue. The product I obtained when using methanol was also a bit cleaner; it ended up being a clear, nearly colorless liquid instead of yellow. If there’s still alcohol leftover you can easily remove it with 4Å molecular sieves. That will definitely help. Can’t wait to see the rest of the synthesis!

You've got a lot of great videos. I see them in the list below this video. Maybe the actual physics of the breaking and creation of bonds is too advanced, but I would find that to be a valuable educational addition to your videos.

Any reason why you used ethoxide instead of something like hydroxide? Were you trying to keep it anhydrous? Personally I would have taken it up in hydroxide then extracted with solvent.

Maybe next time try to protect it a bit from air. Amines have the nice habit of instantly getting oxidized by air, (especially when heated )while turning piss yellow in the process.

You should melt the sodium in mineral oil with high sheer stiring, and then cut the heat. You will get sodium sand that would react a lot more quickly. Add an alcohol to help clean the sodium when its melted in the mineral oil.
PSA: Only do this if you are working on a really small scale, or are experienced as fuck.
The reaction is already exothermic enough with bulk passivated sodium. Adding a large amount of alcohol to sodium sand will cause small molten droplets, the exotherm will lead to boiling and the hydrogen will propel the hot ethanol/methoxide/molten/sodium droplets out the opening, likely igniting with moisture in the air and either exploding or spraying you with burning alkaline molten metal ethanol fire

You gotta get a short path vacuum distillation setup if you want to collect this compound efficiently and not oxidize the bloody hell out of it. There is a ton of used short path equipment out there thanks to the massive consolidation of the hemp and cannabis industry in the last 5 years.

Levo is the reverse enantiomer, and it's a pleasurable opioid. DXM makes you trip (TRIP does not ALWAYS = feeling GOOD)

Why wasn't it possible to simply dissolve it in water, freebase it with NaOH and then extract it with DCM or EtOAc? You could just boil off the solvent, be done with it and save previous sodium and synth grade ethanol, no? Seems like your yield wasn't that high regardless and like this took a whole lot of effort, simply for freebasing an amine.

You likely take DMAE bitartrate not DMAE freebase. DMAE freebase can be used in chemical synthesis. I plan to make Benadryl!

I saw that hat man.. scariest thing in my life. I almost died less than a week later. Some demonicl possed homeless person attacked me while I was at a gas station and sent me to the hospital with a fractured skull. What's crazy about my experience with the hat man is that we saw him on 2 consecutive nights and I had people over that shared the same experience seeing shadow people and their leader the hat man. I found out a few weeks after getting out of the hospital that I was going to be having my first kid and I think the reason he showed up was that he was trying to lead me and my wife down a path that would cause us to abort our first son.... a modern-day blood sacrifice

Basically he is a figure people see when they take a high dose of diphenhydramine (Benadryl). There was a lot of meme culture surrounding it as well.
Why would anyone purposely try to see the Hatman? Like I'm all for Psychedelics, and pushing the brain to its brink with them. But I've seen some shit stone cold sober, in a haunted house I lived in that I can only explain as close to how I've heard the Hatman explained, and it wasn't anything I would try to reproduce js.

I feel like this is a bit of an inefficient prep and seems to uncessarily complicate something as simple as liberation of a free base. The PKA of DMAE is 9.2, this is the pKa of the protonated species and is not super high. A saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate in water should have a pKa of 10.3. This means that you should be able to effectively freebase with addition of NaHCO3 (sat.) until a pH of around 10. At pH 10, all of your tartaric acid byproduct will also be fully deprotonated and be very soluble in the aqueous phase. This solution can be extracted with the non-miscible organic solvent of your choice (couldnt find data of solubility but only did a quick search) to pull out the free base. Now, I imagine the free base is still somewhat soluble in water, so you may need to do several back-extractions, or heavily salt the aqueous layer, or both. All thats left then is to dry (sat. brine, drying agent) and remove your solvent.
I just wanted to show another method! The way you described also works and likely better!. This way is just an extraction free method.
