I had this same problem. I fixed it by purchasing a pair of new keys from the dealer. They fit a brand new 2022 Rubicon. The keys cost me about $56,000 which seemed a little expensive, but it solved the problem as well as all of the rattles that my old Jeep had.
I had the same problem on my '89 YJ. The gears that are in the column are cheap and available at Auto zone. They wear and what happened , you put too much pressure on the key so the gears slipped past each other. It's a bit of a fiddley fix but it can be done. Good luck
I had the same problem and the rack and gear can be ordered online. It is easy to take off the plastic unit off of the steering column. Keep everything you have off off and unbolt the steering column from the underside of the dash and firewall. Then you will be able to feed the wires through and take the unit off to replace the gear and rack easily. I don’t know if there is an easier way but this is just what I had done.
Replacement columns are really expensive and junkyards all seem to know wrangler parts are premium. For instance, Deadjeep has tilt columns for $600. I would just go the kill switch route and save yourself roughly $595.
I'm currently having the same issue right now with my 88 Jeep Wrangler what I did was I went down to the junkyard and got a whole new steering column or used and I also put in a push button so the key has to be in the on position and then the button push it in and it starts I'm just now getting ready to put the new one in since when you tell him a YJ the price goes up about 300 bucks on those steering columns so I went and found an older model 80s GM steering column which was identical pretty much and it only cost me a hundred bucks
My jeep has a push start button! It’s a huge convenience. But that also means it’s a huge convenience for theft too so a kill switch is a must! Great vid Dale!
I would install a push button for the time being and give yourself time to decide or save up for a new column or fix that one. At least you'll still be able to drive the YJ. Personally, my 94 YJ is cherry and I try to keep it 100% stock but if I had one that was just a beater or one I just didn't take as serious I would put in the push button start ad be done.
I had a 90 wrangler. The plastic components in the column had stripped. I ended up bypassing the key with a power switch and a starting switch. I had to wire it up. But it worked great. Just flip on the power switch and hit the starter switch. Good luck
I have also noticed that wrangler and Cherokee have a lot of the same parts but at different prices. Check on a Cherokee the same year and motor. I needed an alternator for my 93 and it was close to $300 and a mechanic from Chrysler told me what to do. Cherokee alternator was $98. Same part number for both at auto zone. I asked why the price difference and the manager said because the idiots would pay for it.
You will find the gear and rack assembly in the Dorman Help! Section..Possible you may have look in a couple different part stores yet I know for a fact Dorman makes those parts in a package.
Pretty sure you're somewhat local to me (I'm near Portland Oregon). I have a non tilt column that has the parts you'll need to fix it. It's yours if you want it.
I have the same issue with my 91 Wrangler. I would love to see how you fixed it. I was also thinking about a switch myself but not sure how to install it. Do you have a video of how you fixed it?
is the rod going to the ignition switch broken ? It's on the steering column. I don't know how it interacts with the switch but you should see it move i would think
Depends on parts availability, and cost. If you want to get it back on the road and enjoy it go with a push button and separate kill switch. ( do i detect another "how to video"?)
I agree, a push start on the column and a kill switch just under the dash. This way you have the option to leave the under dash switch on always and just use the push start on the column or turn it off for added security. Save $ but make it practical
Same steering column is in Chevy s10 gmc s15 Buick skylark parts are still available due to the wide variety of vehicles that column is used in try carquest or napa auto parts
I think it’s better to fix it the right way it will hold the value if you ever decide to sell in the future and I do believe they have a steering column rebuilt kit that comes with the new gears and it also gives you peace of mind that nobody will figure out how to start your car when you’re parked at the supermarket or something in the driveway with your jeep after you did all that work to it
That's a broken ignition switch, probably sheared between the key drum and the electrical switch, it's a full switch replacement. Had it happen on a 92 dodge Dakota that used a lot of common wrangler parts.
I had posted some links to summit racing for the suspected bad parts and 4wp for the same parts, but now the Links are gone of the thread.. the parts were cheap though around $6 for the spur gear and spur gear rack made by dorman
Are you sure the key switch rod going down to the actual "Switch" isn't Jammed up on something, like wires or something else causing the gear to jump teeth because the key switch aligns the free end of the gear?... Long question reminiscent of oak Island narration...
I was thinking that myself that the rod was worn out you see the where the square rod goes but no square rod typically those rods are garbage. I think he should just move the key set to the dash and be done with that silly column ignition that's not serviceable without major tear down use dorman cj keyed ignition switch they are like 18.00 bucks at autozone
Guess what happened to his is a plastic and metal piece that was in the ignition piece in the what happens is that you overturned it and weaken the plastic best thing to do is replace the ignition switch which is the key ignition for placing the whole thing
I hope I can send you my jeep and you can help me to get it better, for some reason my suspension is bad I have a wrangler YJ and suck driving on bad roads I put new suspension and it’s not helpful

Haha! That's awesome! I was hoping for a fix a little less expensive
You can rebuild the whole column. They have videos on how to. Purchase parts
Custom start button is my vote! As others have noted, even a used column from a junkyard can cost. Keep us posted Dale!
I had the same problem on my '89 YJ. The gears that are in the column are cheap and available at Auto zone. They wear and what happened , you put too much pressure on the key so the gears slipped past each other. It's a bit of a fiddley fix but it can be done. Good luck
Bob do ypu know of a good video that shows how to replace the gear?

Yeah. Seems like jeeps at junkyards are rare or well picked over
I vote hidden push button start - I'm going that direction myself! Great videos Dale!
I'm in the same boat guys. The easy way for me it is the push button.
Thank you!

Pushbutton sounds Kool with a toggle switch as a kill switch.

That's an aftermarket wheel. It's nice to mention that.
What kind of hard top and half door uppers do you have? Thinking about getting a roof door combination similar to yours thanks 👍
I have the same issue with my 91 Wrangler. I would love to see how you fixed it. I was also thinking about a switch myself but not sure how to install it. Do you have a video of how you fixed it?
Sounds like the Rack and Sector gear.
After more research, I think there's a kit for this
@@JeepSolid should be Dorman 83221
Gotta get the rack and sector kit
They basically use GM columns, easy to get at a junkyard and most of them have tilt. I was lucky and have a yj tilt column but alot of them are not.
Yeah. Mine isn't tilt
is the rod going to the ignition switch broken ? It's on the steering column. I don't know how it interacts with the switch but you should see it move i would think
3 position toggle switch with push to start button or a in dash key switch with push to start
That would be cool!
Depends on parts availability, and cost. If you want to get it back on the road and enjoy it go with a push button and separate kill switch. ( do i detect another "how to video"?)
Haha! Yep. There'll be a follow up video at some point..
I agree, a push start on the column and a kill switch just under the dash. This way you have the option to leave the under dash switch on always and just use the push start on the column or turn it off for added security. Save $ but make it practical
would you like to review some rock light ?
Same steering column is in Chevy s10 gmc s15 Buick skylark parts are still available due to the wide variety of vehicles that column is used in try carquest or napa auto parts
Still researching, but I think there's a kit for the column.
looks like a DYI I wouldnt try!! Good luck Brother!
That's a GM collum, and I think the key has to be in the lock for the tab to release with a screwdriver
I was thinking that myself the cylinder was too far forward so it wouldn't unlock so the locking tabs were still locked out
Yeah. tried it multiple ways. Key in, Out, On, Off... nothing made a difference. Just wouldn't release
@@JeepSolid It's an S10 column.
I think it’s better to fix it the right way it will hold the value if you ever decide to sell in the future and I do believe they have a steering column rebuilt kit that comes with the new gears and it also gives you peace of mind that nobody will figure out how to start your car when you’re parked at the supermarket or something in the driveway with your jeep after you did all that work to it

yeah. What a pain. Ugh
Key in, turn, then depress to release
Tried that. and every other combination possible. Nothing made a difference. But I found a way to get it out. Haha!!
Push start! But I would probably swap it out.
Kinda depends on how original you want to keep it, a button would work not sure how much work it would be to convert it..
May be more work than replacing the gears... We'll see
@@JeepSolid most likely
I had posted some links to summit racing for the suspected bad parts and 4wp for the same parts, but now the Links are gone of the thread.. the parts were cheap though around $6 for the spur gear and spur gear rack made by dorman
Yeah. That is what I am thinking
Take it in to the shop.
I don't mess with the steering column.
The guy near my house is good, want his number?
Hahaha
Haha! I'll get it

I hope I can send you my jeep and you can help me to get it better, for some reason my suspension is bad I have a wrangler YJ and suck driving on bad roads I put new suspension and it’s not helpful
New shocks and springs? Some of these old jeeps just drive rough
The cheapest thing I can say is to go grab a Cherokee column. I put one in my yj and now my short ass has a tilt column
New gears
push button would be the cheapest but sounds like people are saying the column can be found at a junk yard
I actually think there's a kit. Pretty cheap
never understood why, when you have an electric. problem, just put a key switch on dash
and direct wire.
Yeah. Seems like that would be easy
Sorry I'm a year late you have to turn on the ignition to be able to push the locking pin
I would estimate I tried 100 times. Probably 7000 ways. Was still jammed. On off Off on.. back forth side..
we can send you some free rock light
You cursed me!!! This literally happened to me today!!!!!
An "I did it" replacement column.
Haha! Yep
Just get the correct parts weather new or used and repair it right you won’t be sorry.
Yeah. I think I will
Push button, but key would be keeping it original... Da know wat to tell you to do.
