If you want to hear the most black metal Aquilus song, listen to The Silent Passing off of the Bellum I album. Into The Earth is from Bellum II. Incredible riffs and acoustic passages. Horace Rosenqvist, the composer and lyricist of the band is one of the greatest composers of the 21st century for me probably along with Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth.
The melody and harmony, especially starting around 6:53, is so abstract and yet not simply random. Super creative. They put a lot of effort into the composition in this song.
The absolute cherry on top for Aquilus is that while you see the session musicians he uses for live performances in this video. On the albums proper he pretty much does everything except violin (which I believe he can play, just not to his exacting standards) and a few other bits and pieces. So it is essentially a one man band save one instrument and technical support.
This was great! Agreed - this is ambient music which sets a scene and a mood. For me it is perfect for when I'm concentrating on a project involving data and/or math. I don't know what it is about it, but other music can be distracting. This just flows, and it is long-running. Other good music like this is Sakis Tolis' "The Seven Seals of the Apocalypse."
I've mentioned a few times before, I was never really into Black metal until discovering your channel and going on my own journey of discovery with your reactions, and that has led me to continue searching for more of this type of sound. The more atmospheric/ folk influences the better for me. This was great, thanks Tommy! 🖤🤘
Hey man. You're so right about the crap we have to deal with on a daily basis. Music is my only real escape from it all. When I was a kid we used to go outside and play. Climbing trees, playing football, rugby, cricket etc. But nowadays it's all about the internet and gaming. It really worries me how kids are being educated by the media and not really being guided by their parents. I was a child of the 80s and musically, I would say my Dad inspired me massively. All the vinyl in the house was amazing. King Crimson, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull, Dire Straits etc etc. It was an actual thing that you bought and played it on something you had to actually physically operate. Not just shout Alexa play something now.. like fucking Caligula. Anyway.... Before I get bogged down in this nest of gay vipers. My point is that not a lot has changed regarding music. It's still one of the best treatments for mental illnesses with absolutely zero side effects. It saved my life and continues to do so every day. Aquilus are one of those life saving bands. There are no words that really convey the importance of bands like these doing what they do. They are the true musical genii. Every day I find an amazing band or artist and it warms my heart more than any anti depressant could ever hope to. Much love x Rob
Loved this band for over a decade and really hope they get more widely recognised, even though its unlikely they'll ever gain much mainstream attention. They are so good. Griseus is one of my favourite albums of all time.
The intro to this was beautiful and that melody continued throughout the first part of the song. Other than my usual dislike of the way drums are in black metal,I liked this. The creepy but sort of uplifting tone threw this was great.
