Muhammad is said to have begun spending time in the cave in the month of Ramadan, when he would go there to meditate and pray. It was during one of these visits, on the 21st night of Ramadan, that he received his first revelation. The angel Gabriel appeared to him and recited the first five verses of the Quran.
Muhammad was initially frightened by the experience, but he soon realized that he had been chosen to be a prophet. He began to receive revelations on a regular basis, and he would dictate them to his close companions. These revelations were eventually compiled into the Quran, the holy book of Islam.
