You're lucky you had an "old pro" who would teach you his trade. It's typical for a saw filer to lay down his tools when someone starts watching him. Young men who wanted to learn saw filing, would need to watch from afar. The old Armstrong book referred to this as "knot holing". Peek through the knot holes to learn from the filler while at work.
Thank you for sharing this video. I worked for Georgia Pacific from 1975 to 1998. This was in their Fort Bragg, CA sawmill. I did several jobs during my employment, but spent most of my years as a Saw Filer. We also had a planing mill, where I was a Planer Man in my early years. Unfortunately, I can’t find any videos showing our mill. I would love to share this part of our town's history with my grandkids, but I’ve not found any photos or videos of the Fort Bragg mill. I think GP (with our mill) was pretty strict regarding anyone taking video, or photos inside the mill property. Trade secrets I guess... Anyway, at least I could show my grandson your video, which shows what a saw filer does. Thanks!
Interesting to watch, I work at a sawmill in Canada with cutting edge technology (pun intended). There are many talented saw filers and benchpeople working hard to keep the operation running. It’s a damn shame to see that this trade is disappearing and replaced with automation.
I only recently got into this trade, by complete chance a year and a half ago. Such an awesome trade its a dam shame that next to no one even knows it exists.
@@paulmarcoux2728 Learn as much as you can and it will serve you well down the road. Having been through layoffs and closings I was always able to get a job being a filer.
I am confused I don’t know much about saw filing I just kinda soak up what I can from our filer and with me working on sash gang saws but how would you use a blade with teath on both sides would the back not have to change for one or other side to run half decent
Yup way to much tension for me. And that blade he was working on had heaps of tension knuckles. I think I'd run both tyres hard and then the front and back edges. Try and get it sitting flat on the anvil to start with. He doing ok tho. It is working. Just he making his life harder too. Thanks to the man for the video.
His mill is giving him big bulky gloves. I filed bare handed for a few months until my head filer brought in cut proof tight gloves. It's very important to wear gloves, but big bulky gloves are just as dangerous as no gloves.
@@LogHewer Today’s sawfiler is far removed from my career years. If he does wear gloves, the fingers are missing so that he is able to press buttons. Filing today is like the new sawyer. More of an operator than craftsman. 12-16 inch wide bandsaws were used in my time and today the bands are much narrower. Automatic levelers, tensioners, tippers etc are common. Gloves are not needed. However, if by chance your filers are still swedging and shaping or hammering, tensioning and checking back without gloves on large round and band saws, well it’s only a matter of time before an accident will occur.

Been filing for about 9 years. Your sawyer is fuckin HAMMERING that saw. You're a damn good saw doctor. Saving lives every day haha damn

I filed 30 years with IP and West Fraser. Consistently number one and there's no such thing as a lazy saw filer.

Always need an experienced filer to make sure the machine is doing its job right.

Most likely a low strain mill too
Carrying that much tension is just so much more work
Looks like around 30' tension ? Hard to level a saw properly. I love my simonds leveler. Would not trade it for anything.

One thing to remember is all mills are different. The machines are different. Depending on what wood you saw makes a difference too.
Crazy amount of tension. The front tire is way too close to the gullet and I can't even see a rear tire.

In the 30 yrs I filed saws (band and round) , I ALWAYS wore gloves. I would not hire this guy as a benchman. His technique is VERY unique.
Gloves aside, unique is a polite way to put it. I don't think he has very much experience.
