    The Kami Band East was as good as permanent for 9 years or more, but with the flexibility to swap members in and out depending on their own availability (and who's to say they won't be back some time), the Kami Band West have been as good as permanent members for nearly 5 years with just the bassist swapping out.
    It works. BABYMETAL seem perfectly happy with the arrangement, all the Kami Band members seem to enjoy what they are doing and none of them have gone off in a huff because they're "not getting enough attention" or not having every note they play filmed for the DVDs.
    It seems to me that even some really big fans still can't really accept BABYMETAL are not the same as virtually every other band, they don't follow the same conventions or "rules" about how they should be set up, how they "should" do things to conform.
    Changing their set up may make the people watching them feel more comfortable because they would become what they're used to watching with every other band - I don't see how it would improve anything.
    My thoughts ... If it ain't broke don't fix it.🦊

    • @DeePal072
      @DeePal072 5 месяцев назад +4

      Indeed, and it's weird as many probably enjoy a lot other projects that feature the same kind of flexibility.
      For example QOTSA.

      I understand but I would like to have a permanent band.the Eastern kamis are sooo much better than the west

    • @Grington300
      @Grington300 5 месяцев назад +9

      @@phillipgregory9671 I'll skip over the "sooo much better" - that is an opinion.
      If you get a permanent band it won't be the Eastern Kamis, they have their own things, so you could end up with a much worse set of musicians as all the really good ones may not want to be tied to a contract with Amuse to be recognised as a permanent band member (none of the Kamis are), then a couple of them will argue and there will be bad blood and hassle and people arguing about artistic control and musical direction, everybody will be unhappy and they'll split up .... and all because a lot of (mainly) Americans wanted BABYMETAL to conform and copy the same old format every other band follows because they are somehow uncomfortable with how BABYMETAL do things because it doesn't fit into the compartments in their minds and they don't know if they can call them a band and fans of other bands say "but they don't play their own instruments".
      As I said, if it ain't broke don't fix it - that's always when the problems start.
      Sorry, that turned into a rant lacking a lot of punctuation. I do understand people wanting a permanent band, I just don't think it would work out the way they think ... and it isn't necessary. What they have now (and have had since March 2014) works for them. Leave well alone.

    • @gaplauche
      @gaplauche 5 месяцев назад +8

      As for the East Kamis, few people stop to think that maybe they didn't want to tour overseas as much as Babymetal were planning to do. Most of them have families. They all have comfortable careers as session/live musicians in their home country as well as their own personal music projects. They're a good deal older than the girls. The West Kamis are closer to Su, Moa, and Momoko in age. BOH recently got married and has been experiencing some condition with his fingers that has led him to step down to a 5-string bass. Ohmura also has some condition with his fingers and has explained that he avoids long flights because they exacerbate it.
      Some other issues to consider with the idea of musicians joining Babymetal as full members:
      One is songwriting. With few exceptions, the Kamis haven't been involved in any of the songwriting. Would they be happy not having much of a hand in writing songs for a band they're a "full member" of? If Koba did involve them fully in the songwriting, would Babymetal's future music lose a lot of the variety they've been able to achieve by working with various outside songwriters?
      How would it affect Babymetal's image as a Japanese female group/band to have 4 male gaijins as an equal part of it?
      Even if they hire 4 Japanese musicians as full members, it still dramatically changes the band's image to have 7 members, some of them not women, 4 of whom don't dance, presented in promotional materials and available for interviews. They'll look a lot more like other bands, which as you point out Grington might make some people more comfortable with them, but it will come at the cost of uniqueness.
      And in the end, making them full members is no guarantee they'll stick around. Regular bands lose and replace members all the time. Casual fans of most bands don't know every band member's name. Usually they'll know the singer and maybe one other standout charismatic member, like the lead guitarist. There are people who enjoy Babymetal's music who only know Su's name and don't know Yui quit and Momoko is new. Those who do care to learn more about the musicians will do so regardless of whether the Kamis are "anonymous" session musicians or full members, as Alan has done. I think Alan makes the mistake of thinking his interests and preferences are typical of a "fan," when actually he's in the minority.

    Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。 I witnessed this artistic play at the venue (2 times in the two-day Fox_Fest). What a bliss!! Soothing and exquisite performance by 5 elegant figures in the center 😍. Classy incorporation by our West Kami Band on both sides (4 guitars in total) ❤ Various elements were mixed and sublimed into one beauty by means of something like alchemy. The actual applause at the end of the song was much much much bigger than that recorded in this video.

    In regards to your commentary about the band, let me ask you Alan, If you were a Omura type prodigy, who can play anything and didn't want to be constrained to a whole band concept? of course they would love to have a supergroup, but how long to supergroups last? not very long, and also with BABYMETAL, Koba is personal friends with many of the top songwriters in Japan as well as session musicians, he just needs a band capable of performing these songs, and in the beginning the allstar band he had to work with gave BM credibility, but it likely didn't challenge their skills completely.

      I think this tendency to focus so much on the Kami band is a product of rockist ideology that I think groups like Babymetal tries to push itself away from. I think even musicians need a space where they can do what they love and make money without having to be the star of the show or be a responsible party of the product being sold.

      Do people complain that Elton John doesn't have a permanent band, or Adele, Elvis, Heart, Ozzy, Black Pink etc. Like it or not BABYMETAL is more an Idol group that sings metal than a true band, and that is Ok, I still love them. The band touring with them now is excellent and does a great job, that is all we should expect.

    • @gaplauche
      @gaplauche 5 месяцев назад +2

      Even if Babymetal did hire 4 Japanese musicians as full time members, I doubt ISAO, Hideki, BOH, and Ohmura would be the ones. I think the West Kamis were hired because enough of the East Kamis didn't want to tour overseas as extensively as Babymetal wanted to. They're older than the West Kamis, who are closer in age to Su, Moa, and Momoko. ISAO and Hideki have families and now BOH is married too. They all have comfortable careers as session/live musicians in their home country as well as their own personal music projects. They don't need to work for Babymetal or tour extensively outside of Japan/East Asia. BOH has been experiencing some condition with his fingers that has led him to step down to a 5-string bass. Ohmura also has some condition with his fingers and has explained that he avoids long flights because they exacerbate it.
      There are also other issues: Would they be involved with songwriting? If so, Babymetal would probably lose a lot of the musical variety they've gotten from working with various outside songwriters. If not, would they be happy with that? Most "fans" don't learn more than one or two band member's name anyway. Those who do care to learn more about the musicians will do so regardless of whether they're "anonymous" session musicians or full members, as Alan has done. Is making some people more comfortable with enjoying Babymetal's music by looking more like a regular band worth the cost of dramatically changing the band's image, losing their uniqueness, etc?

    • @jimnusbaum3589
      @jimnusbaum3589 5 месяцев назад +2

      I love knowing there is the live band there and would have no problem seeing their faces but not as "members of the band", for all the reasons mentioned. I can barely remember even looking at the band when I have seen Babymetal live. They are great musicians and I love that Babymetal has their support in the live shows as it adds to the experience and authenticity. But all I remember watching are the ladies, mostly Su, but plenty of memories of Momo and Moa, none really of the band. Sorry but I think a lot (most) Babymetal fans are probably like that.

    The drummer is still Anthony Barone. It's the same line up since 2018, but all 4 of them are American and live in the US, so this is why they always remain masked and receive no public recognition and hardly any attention, because it would be a little strange for a Japanese Idol group to feature all American musicians. Koba needs to figure out the future of BM, because fans miss the unmasked intimacy with the Kami band. If he needs to replace them with Japanese musicians to "make sense of it", then he should do that. (I doubt the original members will ever return). If not, unmask the West Kami if they are going to remain the permanent Kami. I believe Koba even has some sort of "gag order" on the band because you won't find a single video or post from any of them talking or referring to ANYTHING Babymetal.

  • @gelkins2
    @gelkins2 5 месяцев назад +1

    Funny you mentioned the over-production. I comment about this on all the "Live" Videos. If people really want to experience Babymetal they need to check out fan videos or go see them. You might hear a bad note here or there but it's clearly live and it just hits so much harder. ie. Maya or Mirror Mirror on fan videos hit way harder than the version from the Blu-Ray. Those songs live are punishing. Great observation. I also agree with the band being permanent and ditching the masks. Although my hot take is I like the current band. Feels like it's in vogue to call for the Japanese members to come back, but I think the current band is more "Metal" and plays a modern sound better. If that makes any sense lol.

    100% like this, I'm sick of being shouted down in comments when I bring up the horrific use of pitch correction on their Blu-ray releases. You can even hear Suzuka swallowing just before a line near the end on this, whoever used to do their post prod would have been forced to do ritual seppuku in the past if he let that go. If they insist on the robot voicings for future releases, at least include the stems and I'll do my own damn mix.

    regarding the band idea - Hideki is a great drummer, but in my opinion Anthony Barone is even better. Even if you're making a superband from past members and outside members he's the best you can do I think. Bringing Boh and Ohmura back would be pretty awesome though. I think "over produced" is a subjective call on your part. The vocals on this song have always sounded raw because that is how Su sang it and what the song demands. Not saying they don't tweak the LIVE videos, and the Ratatata video was pretty heavily tweaked both visually and audio. But I think they tweak the bluray/dvd less (not that they don't tweak it at all but less than the OFFICIAL LIVE videos). But this song sounded more raw than almost any other Babymetal song on the bluray too. I think that is what they wanted for this song and that is how Su sang it.

    BABYMETALのライブ作品のオーバープロデュースの方針は変わっていないと思います。今回はたまたまPolyphiaとの打ち合わせでそうなっただけだと思います。本当の音が聴きたければライブへ来いということなのでしょう。これはいつも実感しています。バンドの扱いについては日本のレコード会社の契約慣例が西洋と異なるためかと思います。日本では欧米と違いプロデューサーの位置にレコード会社がいます。プロデュース=会社の方針なのです。これはBABYMETALに限らずレコード会社にいるどんなバンドでもそうです。ですからどんなアーティストでも会社を移籍すると音が瓦解します。ご存知かと思いますが神バンドはアミューズに所属していません。それが良いことなのか悪いことなのかここでは判断しません。日本人にとって他国を圧倒するだけの名曲が沢山生み出されて来たからです。日本で物理(CD,DVD)市場が未だに健在なのもレコード会社があるおかげです。ちなみにある噂ではPolyphiaのアルバムにBABYMETALが参加するらしいです。ものすごく楽しみですね。
    I don't think the policy of over-producing BABYMETAL's live productions has changed. I think it just happened to be the case this time in the meeting with Polyphia. If you want to hear the real sound, you should come to the live show. I always feel this. As for the treatment of bands, I think it is because the contractual practices of record companies in Japan are different from those in the West. In Japan, unlike in the West, the record company is in the position of producer. Producing = company policy. This is true not only for BABYMETAL, but for any band in a record company. Therefore, when any artist transfers to a new company, his/her sound is destroyed. As you may know, Kami Band is not affiliated with Amuse. I won't judge whether that is a good thing or a bad thing here. The reason is that many great songs have been produced in Japan, which are overwhelming to other countries. The physical (CD, DVD) market is still alive and well in Japan thanks to the record companies. By the way, there is a rumor that BABYMETAL will participate in Polyphia's album. I'm really looking forward to it.

      I think from the perspective of these artists and the social circles they are a part of, they live in a world where these business relationships border on friendship to a point that questions like this are hardly a concern. People like us have a tendency to look up to these artists and scrutinise their every move and moralize them. Not accusing you of moralizing but I grow tired of people commenting on music these days who atomically make “business” a moral issue instead of just accepting it as a lifestyle for people involved in this sphere while people like us who waste our time writing comments on social media aren’t doing anything nearly as productive with our lives to equate to what they do.
      But like you, I am just speculating on what I see, it’s just these are my thoughts. When I look at collaborations like this, my thoughts don’t go down this route like yours are, so I find it funny that people fixate so much on it like it’s an issue.

    I think thisvtrain has left the Station, they only tried to attack the lead vocal artist. I think with Su alone they wouldn't had any problems to discuss about problems, but they put all their junk together and tried to attack Su with this also she was relativ innocent about the situation, this was more Kobas Business. But their Stage Director had totally different issues and this Attack against their lead vocallist Su Metal was not the taste of the Stage Director Suzuka Nakamura.
