Sorry but you're wrong about the 32x not being compatible with the Sega CDX (Multi Mega) - it was never "officially" compatible but it most certainly does work, I've got mine hooked up at the moment!
Terminator for the Sega CD is actually a completely different game than the Sega Genesis version. They are both the same "type" of game, but it is definitely NOT the same game. Entirely different graphics and levels.
Great review. I just picked up a CDX yesterday, I got fed up with all of the problems with my AtGames Genesis and went with real hardware. So glad I did and now I can do Sega CD games too.
I know this video has been out for a while, but the CDX has always been my favorite Sega console. I wanted a Sega CD for Christmas, and my dad kept saying "no, you want the CDX". I had no idea what he was talking about, but that's what I ended up getting that year. It was the most amazing console I ever had, and yes I did put batteries in it and use it as a Discman to listen to music at school. The biggest thing you didn't include in this video was the pack in games for the CDX. We had the Sonic CD, Sega Classics, and Ecco the Dolphin CD games. Those versions were packed in a cardboard jewel case that is a bit harder to find than the standard versions of those games, and to have all those games packed in was an awesome buy at the time. I remember playing Streets of Rage on the CDX with my friends and having a great time!
I was one of those few people that had both the 32X and the Sega CD. The only 32X CD game I had was Corpse Killer. The footage of Night Trap in this video was from the 32X CD version.
I have one of these. I bought it when it first came out and I've kept it in mint condition with all of the bags and wire-ties, packing material, the included games etc.. The only drawback is while the 32X does work with it, it's not really designed to. I liked the idea that you could play cds in the car with the batteries with one of those cassette converters that has the earphone wire. Back in 1994 or 5 when I got it, most car stereos were stuck with Cassette players and portable CD players were in the $90 range.
A huge game to have for this system would be 'Pier Solar' with the bonus soundtrack disc. play the soundtrack and cartridge at the same time and you'll get really cool background music !!
I love this version of the Sega Genesis + Sega CD. I bought one 2 years ago for the sole purpose of playing Pier Solar along with the additional CD with it to enhance the audio. Since then I've picked up a couple more games for it. I certainly enjoy it.
I don't have a CDX, but I do have a fully functional Sega Genesis/CD/32X system which is the best ever! Add them all up and they equaled about close to $700.. Great systems, great memories and the games are timeless, thanks for the video!!!
My cousin had a Sega CD. He didn't have a lot of games for it but one of the games he had was Batman Returns. We never got passed the first level but we still had a lot of fun with it. Wire Head was another game he had that was a lot of fun which is saying something because it was a FMV game.
I almost traded a "special edition Optimus-Prime" for a CDX from my buddy , , I brought forth the OP but SEAN could never provide the "CDX" , that I knew he still had , , , afterwhile I gave up on it , , , ,a year later I went to a PAWN SHOP in 2002 and saw a JVC. I always wanted a Sega CD. I bought my Genesis for $20 (great deal. Still works) a few years ago and really wanted to get the Sega CD attachment, but goodness they are hard to find working for a good price. My budget for game collecting is a lot smaller and the CDX always intrigued me, but the CDX was a lot more expensive than a Sega CD Model 2. I ultimately bought a Sega Saturn because it was cheaper, and it had a lot of the same games I wanted to play on the Sega CD like Corpse Killer. I still look for a Sega CD and if I ever find one for at least $50 I will probably pick it up. Great video, Jon! Love your hardware reviews.
My most beautiful Sega Cd model has to be the model 1 with it's flashing red and green lights. With a Sega Genesis model 1 on the bottom and a 32x on the top, it's a work of art. I have that "Tower of Power" on display in my game cabinet and just use my Model 2 Genesis with the model 2 cd for actually playing.
Love my CDX! Such a awesome console, I never had it back in the day as I could not afford it but glad I picked one up a few years ago. I use my 32X on it no problems.
This is why I enjoy your channel. Sonic cd Final fight. Earthworm jim Eternal Champions. Fatal fury special. Lunar. Nba jam. Slipheed. Snatcher. Great games. I just wish it would have had a port of street fighter, teenage mutant ninja turtles and a few others but it still provided good memories.
John, you're wrong when you said the Terminator CD was a port of the SEGA Genesis game, just w/redbook audio. It's an entirely different game than the SEGA Genesis version, in fact. Play both & you'll see for yourself.
Dang Sega sure did make a lot of systems in a short time period Sega Gen model 1, then model 2 then cd cdx Saturn. Man if the systems of today did that it would be crazy. The Sega Cd for me I never had one but I remember wanting one so bad back in the day when they first came out. Great Vid
The Sega CDX does support the 32x. In fact I called the Sega tech support line to confirm back in the 90's. Officially however, it is not supported. The reason is because the FCC felt that connecting the 32x to the sega cdx would put too many processors in close proximity to one another, and create radio interference. (Seems silly today considering that many Intel processors contain many processing cores.) anyhow, if you're brave you can connect the two systems together, and you will not damage either unit.
Hay gamester been a fan since last year I've caught a few of your videos on RUclips and i really enjoy the show the reviews are vary well presented and vary informative hope to see lots more
If I wanted a Sega Genesis, a Sega CD and Sega 32X, here is what I would get: 1. I would get a Genesis model 1 or model 2 as a standalone with no Sega CD and Sega 32X add-ons attached for Genesis gaming. 2. I would get a Sega CD-X because it is a standalone Sega CD. Plus, I would plug the Sega CD memory cartridge into the CD-X's cartridge slot for saving game data and get some Sega CD games for the Sega CD-X itself. And 3. I would get another Genesis model 1 or model 2 for the 32X add-on and some 32X games for the 32X because sadly, the Sega Neptune (Standalone 32X) was cancelled because the Sega Saturn was on it's way. It sure beats attaching both add-ons to the Genesis at once that way you don't have to fool around with a clutter of cords and bricky power supplies. Plus, there is also a Sega power strip with the sockets rotated and spaced out for the bricky power supplies that come with the Genesis, Sega CD/CD-X and the 32X. Makes sense, right?
So Quick note on compatibility, it has the same capability as the Genesis 3. Which means many unlicensed titles like Star Control and Turrican (not to be confused with Mega Turrican) don't work. I haven't tested Busby but I am pretty sure it doesn't work, and Gargoyles might not work because of some glitch in the Hardware that was corrected after the Genesis 2.
Personally love the Sega CD. Great video! NBA Jam on Sega CD is fun, Snatcher as well! I'm suprised you didn't mention Snatcher. Also a homebrew game, Sonic Megamix, is on the CD and it's fantastic.
There is a site called GameDude and on their SEGA CD list they have said that some games aren't CD-X compatible. That's strange, because you couldn't fins any games that weren't compatible.
Great vid John. The batteries life during cd playback was about 2 hours or less. Not too good for road trips if your car didnt have a cd player. My favorite games were Soul Star and AH Thunderstrike. Oh and Eternal Champs Challenge from the DS.
Hey John, another great video! I actually had the Genesis, 32X and Sega CD back in the day. I think there was a pretty good Star Wars game for it that I played a lot. Also, could you tell me what model camera you are using for your green screen shots? They look really great!
I had that version. However the only Sega CD games I had was Sega Classics Arcade Collection, Ecco The Dolphin, Rise of the Dragon, Masked Rider, and Sonic CD.
mattnova18 in the instruction manual it shows the adapter that was going to be available by mail order. What it really was is just spacer that was contoured to fit the shape of the cdx and hold the 32x appropriately. You can still use the 32x without that adapter. It works perfectly fine. The whole reason of sega saying do not use that combo was due to the shape but not anything related to functionality.
Stevaside No, it's just loose inside so it moves around. But if you on a stable surface it should be ok. I don't have a 32X or a Sega CD-X to confirm it. I have encountered them both in the wild but the game store I found them at want over $200 for each.
Yea, I saw that mentioned as I scrolled through the comments. I was positive it was compatible but remembered there being some minor issue...I've been wanting a CDX for the longest time, but finally just picked up a Genesis 3 to use in the meantime after I came to the realization that at the price it's going for, it's not gonna happen anytime soon lol...
I was lucky to find Multi Mega for £50, that was about $75-$80 at the time. I have seen a photo of some one who got one for £2.50 $3-4 from a junk shop. The main issue for these are the PSU. The are 9.5v 1.3a here in the Uk. People use the mega drive mk2 psu which 9v 850ma. Although it does seem to work it will slowly damage the system and cause it to crash or act strange when under heavy load.
I was a big mega CD fan, people always talk about the system as if it was a flop but as a gamer I had just played the mega drive for many years, the mega CD was around for a good time with some very good games, I don't remember anyone saying anything bad about the system at the time because nothing was better until I seen a 3DO in a shop and I asked the shop owner if I could swap my Mega Drive and CD for it :) you want to have ago at the 3D0? I remember everyone playing mega drive games when I first started playing 3DO games and the games on the 3DO was amazing, I will make a list of games I liked for each system on my next post tomorrow. Most people get to play these systems at the wrong time and rate the systems without playing them at the time of release
It looks more handy then the Sega genesis + cd-rom attachment. Still old times right it was a first step forward. It took a while before cd really was grown up
I was going to pick up this system. I did, however, run across this website called retrorgb and they have an interesting article about the CDX. Apparently, it has very terrible audio when playing Genesis games. They have a comparison demo of Sonic 3's opening intro and the audio was definitely under par. It sounded like really bad emulation, like one of those clone systems. I'm not too sure if the same applies to the CD games but the bad Genesis audio was a deal breaker for me.
I actually know someone who used this as a CD Player...and ONLY a CD player. It was given to them when their Walkman died and I didn't know what it was at the time. If I knew, I would have offered to buy it off of him cause clearly he didn't know what it was either. LOL
It was so overpriced! I only saw it in one store and it was like 2x more expensive than the best portable CD player. And the only sega cd games I saw back then were terrible! Final fight cd, sonic cd, etc were never put in displays. Sega really dropped the ball.
Thank you! I hope to finally have one by tomorrow for $110. On eBay they go for $300-500+. I remember Toys R Us clearance sold these for $20-30. And I missed out! I own the original and second version. The problem is they take up a lot of space and need 2 power supplies. For me $110 for CDX is a dream. You mentioned Lunar (amazing- Lunar 2 even better). It had great RPGs thanks mostly to Working Designs (Lunar 1/2, Vay, and Popfull Mail). Sonic CD is the best in the series. Final Fight is better than arcade, as is Samurai Showdown. Silpheed was my first real polygonal experience and lots of fun! Thank you for your review- I appreciate you sticking to what matters on 12 minutes vs. 30-40 minute reviews mostly full of crap I don't care about! Keep at it!
I think one of the better Genesis to SegaCD ports was Earth Worm Jim. They took advantage of the larger "canvas" that CD media offers to make a better game.
The only games I own for the _MegaCD_ are SonicCD and Road Avenger. Other than that, there are still some good ones for sure, GameSack showed some earlier I believe. Sure the system wasn't on par with the regular cartridge MegaDrive or SNES and especially not with the PlayStation but it still had some good games. Only downside is, it's still expensive today... so... not something I'd recommend to everyone right away.
Do you have a copy of Snatcher for the Sega CD? If you don't, I would highly recommend hunting down a copy. Super expensive, but very much worth it. Because that game.... wow. Not only the best game for the system, but an incredible game all around. For some reason I always thought the CDX could play 32X games. Does the actual 32X attachment work on the CDX? It seems like it would not work
Even with my vast knowledge of video games and consoles, I NEVER heard of this console's existence. It's tempting to get one but the load times will probably make me stick with emulation.
Funny you're mentioning Final Fight CD, I bought it on ebay a week ago and it arrived today. :D Omg, the voice acting though is terrible, but the 2 Player option and Guy included makes it kinda the infinitive version.
I always liked the Sega CD, Saturn and Dreamcast better then the Genesis. I never could get into the games for some reason, maybe I need to go back and play them now.
Yeah your wrong about the 32x. I have my 32x hooked up to my CDX and it works just fine. Did you even try before you did the review, or did you just guess?
No one has ever answered this question for me before, can you play Japanese mega CD games on this? Also can you play Japanese mega Siri games on the JVC X Eye i'm curious because I have the Japanese version of sonic CD. And I want something to play it on that isn't an actual mega CD because I don't want to put up with all the hook ups.
It looks to be a nice compact unit. I don't think they were released over here, unfortunately as they would be a nice unit to have. Very expensive though, so don't think I will ever get one. Great thorough review.
The 32X is compatible with the CD-X and it will work with those 32X Sega CD games. I have seen videos of people on youtube who have used the 32X on the Sega CD-X. The way it sits in the cart slot makes it so you can't open the CD door though, so if you want to play 32X Sega CD games you have to put the CD in first then put the 32X adapter in.
It wasn't, like ABlackFalcon said, most of the concept was put into PSIV. The title is interesting tho, It translated Phantasy Star IV: The Return of Alis, which make me think that Alis might had a bigger part in the SegaCD version of the game. I would love to play PSIV with animation and voice acting, even if it was horrible like most early sega cd games.
SinisterSally I know the concept was supposedly reused in PSIV, but I do wonder about that; the SCD game was supposed to have first-person dungeons, like the original game, and Alis was supposed to be in it. Of course, PSIV doesn't have either of those things. But perhaps many other things from the SCD game ended up in PSIV. Anyway, it's really too bad that Sega of Japan supported the Sega CD so poorly... they only released a decent game library for it in '93 and '94, even though it had released in Japan in '91, and canned multiple major game projects for it in favor of Genesis versions, such as Phantasy Star CD and Outrun 2019, which also started out as a Sega CD game.
The CDX wasn't marketed like the 32X, it got mensions here and there in game magzines at the time but was overshadowed by whatever Nintendo was doing at the time.
All that the unreleased adapter would have done was stabilize the 32X, which wobbles around more on the narrower CDX than on the Model 1 or Model 2. It was just going to be a chunk of plastic, no electronics. A 32X can be connected to a CDX, no problem. You just have to be careful not to bump it or something while you're playing.
I found mine at a garage sale for $5.Im having to piece everything else together like its weird 9.5 ac adapter and ill need a s video to rca cable since it uses s-video and not "av".
While I'm not crazy about embedded ads (part of the video) and I don't want to encourage you, but if I go to stoneagegamer and buy something, how do I let them know it was *you* that sent me? If you are going to have a sponsor, you might as well get credit for customers they get from your videos.
I read about compatabiltiy issues with Jurassic Park. Also, the Team Play and other 4-player adapters. My official. SEGA wireless 6-button controllers can't connect either (receiver needs to fit between both controller ports). Also, Megabits are not the same as Megabytes. ;) 8 Megabytes is 64 Megabits and there were no 64 Megabit Genesis games that I know of!
IIRC (it's been a while since I used it), the video out is much better than a standard Genesis. Sega Genesis carts are about 8-16Mbits, not mega bytes. The largest rom is 4MB (sonic 3d blast 32Mb). It's NOT true that you can't use a 32x. The reason for the instructions saying you can't is because without the spacer, it didn't pass the FCC regulations of computer devices, but I can assure you it works fine and I've never had it interfere with nearby tvs or radios. Final Fight for the Sega cd is REALLY good. The Sega CD added ram and an additional 68000 processor and I believe Final Fight was a Sega-16 or 18 arcade game and they were able to take advantage of the CD's extra computing power and it has much bigger sprites and it pretty good, one of the best arcade ports to the Genesis and definitely the best arcade port to the CD. The last time I checked, these things go for a lot of money though (with box and docs). They were going for like $300 several years ago on ebay. One other thing... While it does work with a genesis power supply, it's not recommended because the Genesis power supply has lower power output and the CDX uses more power so if you don't have the power adapter, it might burn out your power adapter. Thanks for the review.
I really like the Sega CDX. But I think when they announced it I already had a model 2 genesis and Sega CD attachment. I wasnt going to buy the same system I already had. I think I ended up seeing one in a pawn shop for about $50 when I already had the playstation and Nintendo 64. By then it was 1996 and I was done with Sega Genesis and Sega CD stuff.
Sorry but you're wrong about the 32x not being compatible with the Sega CDX (Multi Mega) - it was never "officially" compatible but it most certainly does work, I've got mine hooked up at the moment!
Same here! I've got the UK version and it's called the Sega Multi Mega not CDX
Yup. It’s able to play 32x
I got the PAL version, it's called the "Multi Mega" here.
Possibly as "CDX" was a import adaptor for the Mega CD here.
CDX is the one I always have hooked up, little badass tank it is
Terminator for the Sega CD is actually a completely different game than the Sega Genesis version.
Finally, actually reviewing rare and old systems. It's been a while.
the 32x works with the sega CDX
Yes, I was the dork that used this as a CD player back in the day: )

Yeah I thought the room switching part looked a little too nice for just sega cd.
I have one of these. I bought it when it first came out and I've kept it in mint condition with all of the bags and wire-ties, packing material, the included games etc.. The only drawback is while the 32X does work with it, it's not really designed to. The CD version of The Terminator was completely different to the Megadrive version.
The cartridge games weren't 8-16 megabytes, they were 8-16 megaBITs. That would be 1-2 megabytes.
I've wanted one of these things ever since I was a kid, but have never actually seen one in person
I played the hell out of sewer shark....I loved that game, spent countless hours on it...I miss them days..

Whoa now.. I had this & the 32X & it worked. It was a bit wobbly but I balanced it out with a ruler.
Currently run Sega CD on my Wii homebrew but have been looking into getting a flash cart for my Genesis.
I'm sure someone like Keith Apicary would use the CD-X as a portable discman. I know he used a Sega Genesis with the Sega CD add-on once.
Personally love the Sega CD. Great video! NBA Jam on Sega CD is fun, Snatcher as well! I'm suprised you didn't mention Snatcher. Also a homebrew game, Sonic Megamix, is on the CD and it's fantastic.
there is a CD player by the company AIWA that plays sega cd and sega genesis cartidges.....

It took a while before cd really was grown up
Your audio sounds better and I like your new video editing
Sega really dropped the ball.
mattnova18 lol omg i forgot about anti skip technology, i remember when that first came out, it blew my mind.
Keep at it!
I have the model 2 sega CD but virtually no games for it ide love to have ur Sega CD games nice stack of games
i love my sega cdx, also didnt you do a review for this years ago
Why do you have 2 copies of Rise of the Dragon. It's a great game, but why 2?
I think one of the better Genesis to SegaCD ports was Earth Worm Jim. They took advantage of the larger "canvas" that CD media offers to make a better game.
That game system looks like it should be a year 2014, modern compacting of an older system. !994....way ahead of its time.
I doubt people put it in their pocket but this is reminiscent of the beloved Discman people put in their cars.
3:35 They never made a Phantasy Star game for the Sega CD did they? I don't recall that. If they did what was it called?
The Sega CD and the 3DO are my 2 all time favorite Retro Systems. Awesome review man.
sega cd games that i love that arent ports....WILLY BEAMISH,RISE OF THE DRAGON,SNATCHERS,BOTH LUNARS,NIGHT TRAP,HEART OF THE ALIEN,POPFUL MAIL,
Nice, those CDx's are crazy expensive now.
Why do you have doubles in that pile? For example, two copies of Rise of the Dragon.
Sega mess up, they should of made the Saturn as small and backwards compatible like that, but with more power, like a 42 bit
Another great video! I always wanted a CDX!
Dark wizard for the sega cd game was awesome
Cool system, a 2 + 1 in one system that plays Genesis, Sega CD and Sega 32X (you still need to buy the crappy add on separately)
I always wanted to learn about this system :)
I don't think phantasy star came out on the sega cd.i think your thinking of Shining Force cd or the Lunar games
He's wrong! The 32x is attached to my CDX and is working perfectly. It's not as good fit as it should be but it works fine
You can open it up with the 32x already on it
Here my must have for Sega CD:
Android Assault - Revenge of Bari-Arm
Keio's Flying Squadron
Lords of Thunder
Robo Aleste
Snatcher
Sonic CD
my 32X works on my sega cdx, whatchu talkin bout....
Phantasy Star on Sega CD? wasn't that cancelled?
I figured that was the case. I did spend like 40 minutes searching online to see if it was released or leaked tho'
***** Phantasy Star for Sega CD was significantly altered and they made Phantasy Star IV for Genesis instead.
SinisterSally
I know the concept was supposedly reused in PSIV, but I do wonder about that; the SCD game was supposed to have first-person dungeons, like the original game, and Alis was supposed to be in it.
If Phantasy Star IV had been made for the Sega CD, it would have been a really big adventure.
The CDX wasn't marketed like the 32X, it got mensions here and there in game magzines at the time but was overshadowed by whatever Nintendo was doing at the time.
I think it will be best if SDXC cards replace blu-rays & DVDs & game-CDs in the future.
I remember wanting a sega cd so badly to play shining force three. Can't belIeve i still haven't played it....
I found mine at a garage sale for $5.Im having to piece everything else together like its weird 9.5 ac adapter and ill need a s video to rca cable since it uses s-video and not "av".
Image if they had come out with that instead of the add on, it looks really compact.
I don't think terminator cd was a port, I think it was a different game!
That Terminator game on Sega CD is actually an original game, rather than a port of the Genesis version.
Looking for a new cable for my SegaCD portable, would the Sega Saturn cable fit?
While I'm not crazy about embedded ads (part of the video) and I don't want to encourage you, but if I go to stoneagegamer and buy something, how do I let them know it was *you* that sent me? If you are going to have a sponsor, you might as well get credit for customers they get from your videos.
Favorite Sega CD games are..
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Time Gal
..and that's pretty much it. Oh and there's Sonic CD but I have the PS2 version.
You can use the wireless controllers of you buy extension cables for the receiver.
Cool video man never knew about that system
Been wanting one for awhile but out of my price range
lol is that a vintage verbatim cd-r from the late 90's?
Does the PowerBase Mini work with the RetroGen adapter?
Yes my 32x is in my CDX as we speak. Its the best way to play a 32x period.
Nice Sega CD collection! There were some overlooked gems on the system, but the price tag and all the gimmicky FMV games pretty much doomed it...
