I love how this song so beautifully and dramatically evokes and pinpoints - PINPOINTS - the moment where the character realises he's going to die, and his death's inevitable, and nobody really cares. And there's that despair, the wonderful despair in the music that I think only Coulton can really capture in this way, where an old trope becomes something more, something you didn't really think about from both sides before now.
This was one of my brother's favorite songs. Every time you mentioned Jonathan Coulton to him, this song came on. I still can't believe he's gone. He died of a broken heart on the early morning of February 7th. he loved making music, too, and i think jonathan coulton was a big inspiration. miss you keenan.
You hold up one hand Everyone waits Until we can move again The burden of command Stands you up straight Something to prove again Blood in your eyes Screams on the radio They say, "Get out of there!" We aren't finished yet You tell them to grow a pair They said this air would be breathable Get in, get out again, and no one gets hurt Something is pulling me up the hill I look down in my red shirt I look down in my red shirt This familiar place Sun in my eyes Right where I'm supposed to be I can read your face I'm not surprised You move in close to me Then you decide Now I'm remembering I've seen this one before I can't stop watching it So what am I running for? They said this air would be breathable Get in, get out again, and no one gets hurt You nod to me and point up the hill I look down in my red shirt I look down in my red shirt In my red shirt I don't hear the sound Everything slows All of it falls away They don't turn around Everyone knows It won't be them today Instead it was me Go down dramatically Stretching it out a bit Still no one notices When they write me out of it They said this air would be breathable I see the naked sky and I taste the dirt Dark at the edges and closing in I look down in my red shirt I look down in my red shirt
Still his saddest song. Before anyone mentions a dog, the weight of my humanity precludes a pet being valued more than a human, expendable as we all are.

The stars! The last Great Unknown! These are the journeys of the space vessel Intrepid, it's 6 year mission, to discover new planets and meet the weird and interesting things that live there, to venture onward as man's first steps in a bold new world. Starring: Bill Ham as Captain Abernathy, Johnathan Minow as Commander Q'eeng, and Kirk Forrester as Dr. Hartnell.
A perfect song for the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, even though it's from a book parodying the "Redshirts keep dying" trope/ clichè... Still love the song!
I wonder how you'd react if you'd been there with my group at Otakon 2011. One of my friends insisted on being a ST09 Redshirt, so I decided to go ahead and buy him a uniform, Phaser pistol and holster. Then I proceeded to mercilessly get the poor sap "killed" by more than ten different cosplayers who were dressed up as everybody from Ash from Army of Darkness to Captain America. Later, at another 'con, we took another picture where he's lying "dead" and I'm scanning away obliviously. =P

I love how he plays on the "red shirt" concept- red both with the uniform, and 'blood' (as someone who hasn't yet read the book, I envision a bloody death)
Lyrics: You hold up one hand; Everyone waits, until we can move again. The burden of command, stand you up straight. Something to prove again. No, that actually makes sense. RUclips supports different maximum audio bit-rates at different video qualities, 240p for example only supports up to a 60kbps mp3 track which sounds pretty godawful if you've got decent headphones.
Funny thing about that, if you listen to genuine 8-bit recordings of old Gameboy games (or similar creations), 240p lowers the audio quality to more... authentic levels ;)
Maybe this song will get more people to read this AMAZING book. It's more than just a parody of redshirts on Star Trek, but I won't spoil it. READ IT YOURSELF.

Scalzi did a Hugo-winning mind-screwing deconstruction/reconstruction of the classic Star Trek trope. It is announced that it will be made into a TV series. Now read the book and try unraveling all the layers of meta involved in that last sentence.
No, I'm trying to drive home a point. For a community that preaches to love and tolerate, brash behavior like what was displayed is hardly what I would consider toleration. Not saying "shut up and take it" or any of that sort of nonsense, but there are much better ways of handling a disagreement with a fellow fan. Especially in a community that gets so talked down about. Bronies and pegasisters have enough enemies out there without making them with each other.
You know that's utter bull. The FLV is 124Kbps AAC, the mp4 is 144 vbr AAC. RUclips converts audio to lower bitrate no matter what you encode it with when uploading.
