‘Extinguish the whole thing’: Douglas Murray calls for Israel to ‘destroy’ Hamas

- Author Douglas Murray has called for Israel to “extinguish” the war in Gaza by completely destroying Hamas and making sure they are never operationally capable again.
Mr Murray warned that there are consequences for starting a war, and Hamas can’t now put their hands up and “call it a draw”.
“As one of the members of the war cabinet in Israel the other day said, Benny Gantz, there is no point in putting out three-quarters of a fire,” he told Sky News Australia.
“You either put the fire out or you don’t. You don’t put out a bit of the fire and then leave it burning.
“Extinguish the whole thing, or there’s no point, and in the case of Gaza, extinguishing the whole thing is destroying Hamas completely, making sure they are never again operationally capable.”

There's a very big difference and it shows the level of your ignorance and/or level of education.
First off, ISIS formed in the Syria/Iraq region, so geographically there is not the same geopolitical ideology. Second, ISIS wanted to establish an Islamic caliphate which neither Iraq nor Syria have in modern times, even though both are Muslim majority countries. Thirdly, the countries that participated to fight ISIS formed a much broader coalition and or participant base. Even Iraqis and Syrians fought against ISIS in parallel with Westerners.
As for Hamas, they might be seen burning the Israeli and American flags, but never will they strike against the United States or any Western nation directly whereas lone wolf attacks from ISIS can and will still occur across the Western world even today as we speak. So, get your facts straight. ISIS can be of various nationalities, whereas Hamas is pretty much 100 % Palestinian.
Also, although both groups are Sunni, the worldview of Hamas is not such that the whole world should be Muslim. That is an ISIS ideology. Does Hamas want to obliterate Israel? That's not news but is no different than nuking Gaza and killing all people there.
Why is nuking Gaza right? Why would that solve a single problem? Just because the US did it, twice, does not mean it's effective or a way to solve any political problems.
As for the flip side of the coin, who supports ISIS now? You have a very small minority of Muslims, hard to identify the scope and magnitude exactly, but a greatly diminished number of people that would support ISIS at this very moment.
On the other hand, unpopular Hamas before 10/7 (by Palestinians that is) now have more and more support as civilians die in Gaza in the hundreds - some times 100s per day and you can see for yourself mass graves being uncovered left and right in Gaza - NOT killed by Hamas.
Just answer me one question: If you happen to have family in Gaza and you are an American citizen but you learn the Israelis killed them, what would your reaction be? Would it be like these idiots that say - then don't travel to Gaza? Do you realize how insensitive that is? And then we turn around and say that it's ok for Israeli and Israeli-American mothers to invoke emotion when it's their families being affected - hypocrisy at its finest.
What about the Israeli-Americans who purposely go to Israel to fight against Hamas and die? Why are they heroes now all of a sudden? What would you say if the Palestinians in Jordan who are PALESTINIANS or for that matter all of the PALESTINIANS in Syria and Lebanon too all go to fight Israel now? Would that be acceptable to you?

The world today is sick. I was in Malmö, Sweden, in the early 1990s; the city was lovely and booming, and it reminded me of the novels I read as a youngster. When I returned to the city for work six years ago, it resembled a dangerous Middle Eastern area, with threatening people on the streets and a sense of unease. The terrible part is that when I spoke with Swedes about it, they admitted the situation had worsened, but they couldn't say it was due to the Muslim influx. Political correctness and the education-based assumption that certain classes are victims have become common property. In contrast, anti-Semitism against the Jewish population in the city of a few hundred quiet people became something legitimate among Swedes who were happy to join the hatred together with the Muslim population.
Hi from Sweden. Native, born here 50-odd years ago and I live a stones throw away from Malmö. I can sign off on the broad strokes about both the demographic and cultural direction, as well as the unyielding collective cowardice and obedience of the Swedish collective psyche, making top-down political manipulation easier than it otherwise would be. But I'd like to put some of your reflections into context.
The first thing I'll note, is that while antisemitism has risen here like for so many other places, so has support for Israel, by the average resident. Just weeks before October 7, a Linné University study showed a 66% increase in Swedish popular support for Israel, over the past 14 years. The country is polarizing on this question like on so many others, and while the antisemites and antizionists receive their share of the headlines, that's not by far the full story. It's also been mentioned in NYT's "The uncomfortable truth about Swedish antisemitism", that right-wing extremism takes a back seat to both Islamism as well as "progressivism" as a source.
For another silver lining, the political spell has been finally broken, beginning about when you came here last, on taboo after taboo regarding migration, integration, crime and even some excessive lgbtq stuff. It doesn't mean that the entire population changed opinion over night. And it most certainly doesn't mean that we now have a way out of the deep hole. But a threshold was reached when enough people "stopped whispering and started shouting" as the lyrics almost goes.
The party-political implications of this have been substantial. The Swedish parliamentary system has been a sound mix of 7-8 parties clustered around two coalitions, assuring that there's something for everyone. On paper. In reality, we've had a black sheep third rail party that once originated in Naz-word-friendly waters. It was getting gradually more mainstreamed in its views, but was shunned by all other parties, creating successive weak governments aimed at keeping them out. The worst part is, for every common sense policy the black sheep party SD proposed, ALL other parties would refuse, on principle.
This created a system where politics got decoupled from prudent common sense, which pushed one voter after another to abandon their classical range of options, and considering the unthinkable, not to mention unspeakable. A massive loss of political trust has followed, as one party after another has gradually started supporting today, one former SD proposal after another. SD for their part, gave unequivocal support for Israel after October 7, which is more than certain other parties have found it easy to do.
The current era disconnect between the mainstream finger wagging rhetoric of yesterday, and the Johnny come lately policies of the 2020:s is getting increasingly bizarre. The Social Dems, founding party of the Swedish "people's home" and the main block of the left wing coalition, have in 2024 engaged in rhetoric suggesting that open borders policies of recent decades, was mainly a right wing policy. Their plan for stopping the bleeding to SD is thus to completely rewrite history and hope that voters have no memory. But they seem to be forgetting that their main voter base today are the immigrants themselves - a voter block who may prefer not to be discussed as an ailment caused by others, by the party they plan to vote for next time. I have a complex and not purely adversarial history with the Social Dems myself, and seeing the party descend into a maze of erratic and conflicting poses doesn't give me universal glee.
As a side note, for those of you who like following Murray and are interested in Swedish politics, I'll mention that he appears twice in recent time on the "En rak höger" podcast on Substack. You'll find an Ayan Hirsi Ali and Matthew Goodwin there too etc, these all in English of course.
