  • Mexico is commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Spanish conquest of the Aztec empire.
Many are choosing to honour those who defended their land, and celebrate the ancient Aztec city of Tenochtitlan that is believed to have been founded 200 years before Europeans arrived.
Al Jazeera's Manuel Rapalo reports from the Mexican capital.

The Mexica (their actual name) were wiped out by war and/or diseases brought by the Europeans. The Mexica empire was said to have been about 80,000 sq miles, but not all the people within those borders were Mexica. The were people from various other groups who were subjugated by the Mexica. The Iberian peninsula was once part of the Roman empire, but the people there weren't actually Romans. The vast majority of Mexicans do have indigenous DNA, but just not Aztec/Mexica.
