    RMSP instructor Jeff McLain gives his thoughts about the Air Direct wireless tethering device from Tether Tools. Overall the Air Direct gives you the freedom of wireless tethering at the expense of having a slower download speed to the computer. Watch the video to learn more!

    Hi Jeff. Thanks for taking the time to review the Air Direct. We just wanted to clarify a few points so there is no confusion.
    1) The Air Direct Arca Clamp is not included with the Air Direct. It is sold separate and will mount the Air Direct to an L Bracket.
    2) Canon cRAW is a good option to speed up the transfer rate of RAW files. cRAW will dramatically increase transfer speeds and not effect the quality of the RAW file. Other camera manufacturers offer a similar Compressed RAW that will reduce file size and are lossless. An additional bonus is the files will use about 50% less hard drive storage space.
    3) Saving files to the camera card - There are options to save RAW, JPEG or both to the camera card and also transfer the specified file type(s) to the computer. This feature is tethering software specific. Smart Shooter is a good option to check out for this feature.
    4) Air Direct works with any camera that has compatible tethering software.
    5) You can access the internet while using Air Direct. The Air Direct Utility has a feature called Bridge Mode that allows for continued internet access.
    We are happy to answer any additional question if needed. Thanks.

      Tether Tools it should be written in big letters everywhere - doesn’t work on any modern Mac except with proprietary Tether Tools software.

      Hello! How long would a 5 second 720p video take to transfer ?

    • @Tethertools
      @Tethertools 3 года назад

      @@crazyphotobooth video files transfer faster then RAW files so it shouldn't be more then a few seconds. But that will also depend on wifi connection and computer processing specifications.

    • @crazyphotobooth

      @@Tethertools the wifi would be from your product correct?

    • @Tethertools
      @Tethertools 3 года назад +1

      @@crazyphotobooth yes, the Air Direct broadcasts a WiFi signal. It can broadcast on both 5Ghz (faster, closer range) or 2.4Ghz (slower, farther range) frequencies and this will have an affect on transfer speed. Some computers can only work on 2.4Ghz networks so that can be a determining factor as well.

    Thanks for another great RMSP video Jeff! I am a Tether Tools user now and their products are excellent. This product has some great potential, and is attractive in that I am a studio photographer that works in low light sets quite a lot. Having cables that get underfoot or hitch up gear in the dark is a problem I'd like to eliminate. While Canon does have the integrated wifi transfer capability the transfer time is a problem for me that TT Air Direct doesn't really mitigate either, plus it adds more weight to the camera that will increase fatigue during extended handheld shoots. So for the time being, I'll have to continue happily shooting with the TT cables, which solved 100% of the problems I was having with the cables I was using before. Keep up the good work Tether Tools!

    I've been using case Air for a long time and am pretty happy with it. I'm struggling to work out whether this would be a useful "upgrade".

    When shooting with the FujiX-t3 can I shoot with my iPad Pro? And maybe get a live view. Can you do a video with a Fujifilm camera and you wireless system and a iPad please?

    Great review, thank you Jeff
    Can you tell me if it is possible to link this to an iPad and store RAW files on the memory card in the camera (Canon R6) at the same time whilst shooting? It would be really useful to us for outdoor styled shoots to show our clients how the images are looking without setting up a digital station on location, and just simply show the live images on an ipad. Thanks for your time :)

    Been looking at this. Bought the Case Air some time ago and it's never been a good system, to glitchy and complex. This looks better for me since I want to shoot to my iPad on location since I move around constantly and that's difficult with the MacBook. Shooting Jpgs and RAW is not a big deal. I wonder if you could have the camera designate one card for raw and one for jpgs and that way save to the card? I know tethered to C1 all shots are stored on the laptop. The unit looks too big. By the time I put a light trigger on the hotshot and this on the side it looks like some sort of transformer. I think I'll stick with my cable. Maybe TetherTools will improve it or Canon will bypass it.

    Hi Jeff. Thumbs up. Wanted to know if you can use the Live View feature in Capture 1 with Air Direct? And if so is the latency more delayed?

    • @forestchaput
      @forestchaput  4 года назад

      Hi Bill, as far as what Tether Tools tells us, if your software program supports LiveView, then it's possible to use that with the Air Direct. I imagine if you reach out to Tether Tools, they'd have their latency info! Thanks!

    HI! I use Air Direct on Windows 10 with Capture One 21, in the Raw+Jpeg shooting mode, it does not send Jpeg first , it sends both files at the same time, because of which I have to wait a long time. Please tell me what to do for the jpeg to be sent first . Thanks

    • @forestchaput
      @forestchaput  3 года назад

      Perhaps since Oct 2019 they have made some updates and it sends both files simultaneously now - we recommend you reach out to Tether Tools directly for your issue.

      Depends on the camera. Some can shoot to card and computer, some can only shoot to one or the other.

  • @amdenis

    Useful video. Just wanted to note two things. First, it DOES save to your card AND to the remote Capture-one define primary and optionally backup location(s) at the same time--- same as a cable does. Second, you CAN still connect over the Internet at the same time, and use your browser, or pretty much any software or other utility. In fact, you can support remote grep, rsync or other modes of TCP or UDP access simultaneous with the local shoot and supporting applications (e.g. CaptureOne, camera controls, CO Pilot, etc), which can be really useful in training, not just in professional situations-- especially given the CoVID-19 pandemic underway currently.

      Werner Himmelbauer - I don’t know how/if that works with a Nikon... I don’t have my D850 anymore, as I replaced it with an A9II. Kind of moved over 80% to SONY, 20% Blackmagic over the past year. I only use lightroom for limited areas of creative workflow, where ACR-LR-Photoshop are useful, such as with Lumenzia, and LR Timelapse. I do almost everything else with Capture One-20.

    Hi Jeff, you almost motivated me enough to buy this product and test my use case, but!! It is more sad that it is not widely available and also after 3 years, there is no update of this product. TetherTools does not even sell this in their website anymore. As a wedding photographer my goal is to deliver pictures as fast as possible or at least to wedding guest for marketing. I want at least a larger JPEG file sent to a Mac machine via wifi router so someone sitting there can edit and upload the edited picture. But you said the device does not allow the jpeg/raw to be saved in the memory card as well. I will lose my client right over there. Do you know if there is a similar product like Canon WFT-E8A Wireless File Transmitter that will work with most lower end cameras? Like 6D R6 R5, because the transmitter only work with 1DX.

    Your commentary is similar to what I got from several Tether Tools ambassadors, plus Capture Integration. I use a Phase One XF / Phase One IQ160 combo, and had hopes that this tool would help my remote workflow. While I have not gotten an enthusiastic "thumbs up" from anyone, I did not get a "thumbs down" either. Would help with the 30-foot, or 10-meter limitation while on location? ...mehhhhhhhh. A good idea, just not "up-to-speed" yet.

    Bought the case relay + couper + power bank from Adorama. Case relay lights red and my powerbank lights green when seperated from the camera and case relay. When I've everything connected case relay is red and powerbank lights green. However my camera doesn't turn on. The couper fits right in, but nothing happens. This is NOT FUNNY ANYMORE!

    If you on Mac - don't buy the device. It doesn't work as advertised. You are limited to Tether Tools proprietary software for tethering. On top of that, if you are Sony user - mobile app is not available (and noone knows when it will be).

      @@forestchaput ah ok. I watched about 3 minutes and started skipping around to see it in use, so i didn't see those 15 seconds showing the screen grab.
