3 suggestions after following along and realizing there is a better way. 1st: I don't need to take off the screws that hold the memory so that was a waste. 2nd: There are little holes that allow one to push the keyboard and the palm rest up instead of almost breaking the little thin plastic by pulling up too hard. 3rd: I don't need to remove the wiring that connects the fingerprint reader etc. It is pointless to do this and is easily damaged so it's best to leave it clipped in and just move it out of the way a little. I hope this helps others from wasting time and effort and maybe breaking things. Peace!
Many laptops (and monoblocks and even desctops) had an mSata slot in 2012. X220 and all the x20th generation is a legend because x30 was the first generation with an new keyboard, so it was the end of the IBM spirit. The end of 20 year history professional laptop production by proffessionals for professionals. For today, Lenovo totally killed Thinkpad, but we have one shitty shiny mac more.
My old Acer Aspire 5112 from winter 2006 has an un-spec MSATA slot. It's not compatable with storage devices tho.. but you can put other expansions like the Broadcom Chrystal HD in it. Shaves about 80% of cpu load running 1080p h264 material.
In the BIOS you can set the SSD as the first boot drive .... or once you re-format the original hard drive the SSD will become the only "bootable" device and it will load straight from the SSD. Hope this helps!
Do you have the same laptop model? Cables on the wireless card are the antennas, should have either 1, 2 or 3 of them. You need them if you want your laptop to have wireless access. If your laptop supports mSATA drives, it should go in the Wwan slot.
Ok you can install the mSATA SSD in the Y480 (check first to make sure it's supported!) and if one of the drives is a Western Digital you can download Acronis True Image Western Digital version. Install and once it's open, use the Clone feature, source HDD, destination SSD and proportional since your destination is smaller than your source. Otherwise you are stuck bying Acronis True Image unless you want to resize your partition and clone it using something like clonezilla.
Great video, very helpful and informative. Just a tip though - it might be better to leave out the music in future. The audio levels were fine imo, but I like to watch tutorial videos at higher speeds (1.25 or 1.5 generally) and so the music tends to start to sound bad. Or perhaps you could upload another version of the video with the music slowed down. :P
thank you for the quick response. the manual for my laptop does not provide any notes on adding Intel Turbo Memory and from reading notes online, it memory might not increase performance. i've ordered an SSD and plan on cloning my current drive over to that one. i'm also considering upgrading from 4gb ram to 8gb since the cost of memory upgrade is about $40 on crucial. thank you again
Did a quick search and I'd have to say no. The PCI-E slot on laptops does not always supports mSATA also, so it's important to double check before spending some money on an mSATA SSD.
A hybrid drive would be slightly useless with a SSD as your main drive as it wouldn't have much to cache and wouldn't make full use of it. I'd go mSATA SSD + HDD for max performance. A regular Hybrid HDD only would be a great second solution, but the X220 only takes low profile HDDs so be careful, as far as I know, no Hybrid drive is low-profile (1.8" vs 2.5")
For those of you wondering if your Thinkpad has a slot for mSATA HD, you should check out thinkwiki.com, cover old and new Thinkpads.. I think that the mSATA only go up to X240, and the newest model X250 uses a different type of connector that only allows you to use it as a cache and not a 2nd HD.
Thorough step-by-step video, followed for Thinkpad X230T to install Crucial M500 240GB mSATA solid state drive. To release the palm rest, it's only 5 screws, not 6.
Head's up for anyone with an X220t that is having issues with seeing their drive, you may need to update your bios to the latest revision. I just put in a 480GB M500 Crucial and it required upgrading to the 1.31 firmware before it could be detected.
Hmm apparently I should proof read myself lol. All this is assuming that you are using the mSATA SSD as a boot disc and the other HDD as a storage disc. Then you can decide after how long to shut off the hard drive (stop spinning) or keep it always spinning. Please note that the HDD needs to be a slim 2.5" laptop drive to fit, not just regular height.
Great video! I guess I have to see if my x220 has an mSata drive slot. I already have a Crucial SSD and it does boot faster than a HDD. Lenovo's modular design is great and is simple to replace components. The HDD just slides out after unscrewing a screw and don't have to remove the whole back like HP.
Hello, I have an HP DV6-1355DX notebook. I've recently discovered that my laptop has a port for Intel Turbo Memory right next processor. I believe the port is some sort of PCI-E that resembles the mSata port. is Intel Turbo memory the same as the msata SSD? can I use either or?
the system will offer me then a way to move my operating system to this new disk from HDD ? Or do I need to find a third party tool which will do the trick ?
Cheers! Thank for the Video. I want a SSD fpr the OS in my laptop, but the old HDD should still storage my data. I remove the stuff and then i found i think a Wlan modul in the slot you show. Can i remove the Wlan modul and put in the Wwan Slot? Whats with the cabels? Thanks for a answer.
I can see that you have already an mSATA drive and you just replaced it, can I change my regular 2.5 inch HDD with an mSATA? Or Does it depend on my laptop hardware?
Hello, thanks for the great vid. I've been confused by the ssd I see here inside and the hard drive (that can be upgraded to a ssd) that I've seen slide out on plastic rails from the side of the laptop. Can you explain the difference and which would be better to upgrade on a cheap used x220 that I'm hunting?
the X220 X230 and related T series can have both an MSATA and 2.5 Storage device. MSATA is Sata 2 3Gbps, 2.5 bay is Sata 3 6Gbps. In actual use, there's little difference - the top speed of the device is around 3Gbps and the CPU is the bottleneck. I shifted to MSATA to keep the 2.5bay free , for weight reduction and for use when needed.
I find this confusing. he's not touching the normal hard drive at all and only messing with msata SSD so does this mean that if I buy an msata I don't need an original 2.5inch hard drive? wanting to update my Thinkpad x220's 320gb Hitachi drive with something faster and better.
Basically you can run this laptop with a msata SSD, a 2.5" HDD/SSD or using both at the same time (a good setup for both would be windows installed to the msata drive, the 2.5" drive used for extra storage space) So yes, you need a drive in one of the bays at least, but it doesn't really matter witch one. You could run with just a msata drive if you wanted.
I have an Acer Aspire 7740 Is mine compatible with mSATA? Mine has a wireless adapter like the one you have but I dont recall it having another slot for mSATA. Mine doesnt come with SSD so I'm not sure if that answers the question there.
Hey. How to install the windows on it? I have windows on my 1tb hdd. I want to add 120 or 240 gb of msata. And how to migrate os from the hdd to the msata? I almost there when I watched this tutorial. But you're not including how to install windows. Please help and feedback thanks
I have a Lenovo y480 but it does not have an msata but I could have bought the same model with an msata but I chose not to so I was just wondering if there is there anyway I can install one know?
Yes, you can put a new bigger capacity SSD in place of the installed 320GB HDD. I installed a mSATA SSD 256BG with the Windows 10 system and change the installed 320 HDD with a new 1TB WD HDD for storage on my X220 and it works perfectly.
that is not msata, it's sata. mSATA looks more like a wifi card than a hard drive and actually uses the same connector as the wifi card, but not all wifi card connectors, called mPCIe support mSATA, and in reverse most mSATA ports cannot use a wifi card if installed
guys is MSATA one size fits all....I just want to upgrade my 80gb into 120 but I'm worriying for the physical it may not be compatible :(....any response will I'll be appreciated : ) cheers
***** Samsung's SSD generally offer the best reliability and performance for the price, so I'd say - go for it. I have 840 EVO 120 GB SATA and its working great in my PC, rock solid and fast for two months already.

NOTE: Nice Job Sir: But Next Time If you don't want to go through so much hassle use a HP or DELL Machine! They have much easier access to the Mainboard. CHEERS!
Hi , I have installed an mSATA ssd like you did , HOwever, It's heating to 65 C constantly, because there's no ventilation for the slot. Should I worry about it?

This is why the X220 is a legend. A 2011 that has an MSATA Slot

Whats the max I can upgrade to?
The largest available works i.e. 1TB. I'm using a Samsung EVO, but any brand will do.

Those additional taped-up antenna wires on top of the mSata bay are provided for optional 3G WWAN cards that can fit in that space.
this laptop is among the easiest to open and service compared to laptops at its time. Brilliant design by Lenovo
Man. Your tutorial is perfect, even you said six screws for removing the palmrest when actually are five :)
This was helpful. Used this to install mSATA on an X230 - very similar to X220. Thank you.
Do you have the same laptop model? Cables on the wireless card are the antennas, should have either 1, 2 or 3 of them. You need them if you want your laptop to have wireless access. If your laptop supports mSATA drives, it should go in the Wwan slot.

Hi, is the Lenovo X220 accepting only half-size (mini) msata ssd or does it accept full size msata ssd?
Hybrid drives are awesome, don't get me wrong. If money is not an issue and you can have an awesome deal go for it!
It is a great demo. Can u display the msata read & write speed result?
Perfect...doing this at this exact moment. Thank you.

Gives you a fast drive for your operating system and most applications and leaves room in the 2.5" bay for a large regular HDD for storage!

I am planning to upgrade my x220t hdd to msata because it boots up so slow. how to do I make my system boot from the msata?
hai... i have dell 5460 without msata drive.. if i want to install msata as cache drive..
any setup need to done or just plug and play...

Wow, this was back in 2012? I'm just about to upgrade the main drive to SSD SATA III. I'm am so behind with the times.

really nice video. can some one tell me what battery this is? 7:51

i have that same exact laptop and we have tons of msata drives at work just sitting around!

would you like to send one my way?! I'll take one off your hands for an x220 i am tryin to fix up.

guys is MSATA one size fits all....I just want to upgrade my 80gb into 120 but I'm worriying for the physical it may not be compatible :(....any response will I'll be appreciated : ) cheers
I have an i5, X220i so I might do this upgrade. Do you need to clone the OS first before doing this?
If you want the OS to load from the SSD yes you will need to clone the boot drive to the new one.
noob question: is the Msata that replaceable? i was thinking of buying a stronger Msata in the near future...
