Thank You for schooling us expats in a lil Portugese history on an important holiday! And I agree, if one plans to live here, knowing the language is of course important, but also it’s history & culture. I personally look forward to more videos broadening out from tours of Algarve towns and whether or not they have a hospital or international school lol.

When visiting Europe I often wonder what events I am probably missing out on experiencing because I'm just not there the right day of the year. It might be a national holiday, a food festival, a religious festival or maybe some other type of local community gathering or celebration.
On the occasions they are happening when I'm visiting, I am thrilled. Thanks for sharing this occasion!

Thank you Nick for sharing this recent albeit important date in PT history. I’m showing my age but I recall hearing about the raise of Portuguese democracy on TV news while I was a student in Italy. It was a big deal at the time with Spain soon to follow. I didn’t recall the exact date until we saw the 25 April Bridge in Lisbon late last year-so it connected a lot of dots for me. Appreciate your work. Cheers. 👍🏻 🇵🇹

Hello Nick, I have enjoyed your video. Strange that you are from Cape Town. I was married to the Portuguese Consul General located in Cape Town during the time of the (revolucao dos cravos). Do you remember the statue of Bartolomeu Dias, on the entrance of main road in Cape Town? Our embassy commemorated the 25 de Abril laying flowers at that specific location. Remembering our revolution. Now, the time has gone by, and I am leaving in Pretoria, my husband passed few years ago and I so much missing Portugal. Love your videos. Carry on your good work! Love. When Salazar came to power was not by a coup de
'etat. He was invited to do that job. Twice. He only acceptwd on the second time. Our economy was such in bad shape that he said he could not have opposition. That is why he was a dictator. But he was very much loved by People. Taxes were very very low and he didn't take us to the WWII. Bridges, hospitals, roads, universities that we steel have today were made by a man from Loulé called Duarte Pacheco, during Salazar govern time. When Salazar was in power, our country had no foreing debt. Hope you don't mind me adding this information. But for me doesn't feel right when i hear that we became a better country when we entered European Union. We were really a stable and almost self suficient country. Now we have to buy everything and we almost don't produce anything. And our foreing debt is huge. And 25 de Abril was a revolution caused by differente kinds of Generals. Some of them were Generals that had College degree and the others were "life created" Generals. And Marcelo Caetano decided to "level" them all. And the one that went for College to become Generals didn't like it. Our 25 de Abril is kind of a narrative that is being taught in some shady way. Famillies lost their private properties those days for People who Just came inside their houses and farms and simply took posetion.

It's all wonders in the Salazar's regime...by the way when he left power what was minimum wage at that time? How was the child death rate? Percentage of poor people and illiterate? How much time you needed to get from Lisbon to Faro by car? And how many people could afford a car? And yes Portuguese people adored to be tortured by the pide? All wonders in Salazar's Portugal we were so ahead of those backward countries like England, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, USA, Italy, Holland, Japan, South Africa etc and etc. That's why millions had to run illegally from here in 50's, 60's and 70's! Pide already existe when Salazar was invited to govern. He might not have been a Saint but he was not a demon like People like to say. We always have to know from whom does the information comes from. And we can be polight to each other on our differente point of views. Try to talk to older People and hear what they have to say abiut those times. Don't let your hears hear Just what the narrativa tells you. I cordially wish you a good Day.
