Ken Burns is perhaps the greatest documentary historian living in the US; his work on the Civil War, the Dust Bowl years, even the history of Jazz, have been widely, and highly, praised... each project he undertakes takes years in research and developed even before filming ...
... and yes, I am fan-boying ... but I have yet to see any documentaries that comes even close to the shere grasp of history he and his team puts together ...

Gratitude is great, but more than anything, those who serve want to see us expressing the liberty and humanity they fought to secure.
In most case they don't want to discuss their time in conflict. They want to thrive with you.

An maternal uncle (by marrage) served in a Scottish Regiment during the Korean War ... in all the years I knew him, he never uttered a single word about it ... but I can but only imagine the horrors he saw ... hardly surprising he was an alcoholic... but after the death of his wife, he moved to Burma, became a Buddhist, and sobered up ... last time I saw him as at another of my mother's sisters funeral ... and looked pretty well ...
Sadly, he passed away a few years after that, and was cremated there ... but my memory of him is still pretty clear ...
So I agree ... whether it be here in the UK, or in the US, we need to allow those veterans, whether we agree with the war they fought in, or not, to return home, and live amongst us, quietly and with dignity, both in life, and death ...

I was heartbroken and outraged when in the news years ago was mentioned that a veteran actually froze to death at his own home in the States because he couldn't pay the electricity bill and he was cut off. It still enrages me that something like that could ever happen.

I don't understand. How can citizens be deported? And being veterans means they joined the army which mandate you are a citizen to begin with. There is something I'm not understanding here and this is the first I hear about that website.
You don't have to be a citizen, many are not and are "promised" citizenship by their recruiters. A lot of times this doesn't happen. Mario Martinez defended the Berlin Wall against the Soviets, he is now on trial to be deported. Lauri Törni fought in the Vietnam War as he was promised citizenship but died in combat. There is a long history of this. A lot happens that no one talks about and the news doesn't cover and people just make assumptions to fill in the rest. According to the US Army more than 8000 join each year (4%). MAVNI has also recruited thousands into the armed forces. As of December 2016, MAVNI is under review and closed indefinitely.

Ken Burns, ladies and gentlemen, a true scholar of history. ...What a great approach to try to gather-up all the different viewpoints, from the Vietnamese to Gold Star mothers so that all the different perspectives and voices can be heard. That takes hard work, but maybe, just maybe, with an approach like that we can learn to have some empathy.
Ken Burns is a rare breed of truth telling filmmaker. The main victim in the Vietnam war was not the US but ordinary Vietnamese.

I've been watching the series, I'm starting episode 8. It is absolutely heartbreaking. I strongly urge anyone who cares about America, regardless of political stripe, to watch the films. As a nation we really struggle with self-identity. We're in the midst of another moment of history that is almost as monumental to 1968, where we as a nation are trying to define who and what we are. The Vietnam War is an unaddressed psychological wound, America has so many of them in our history, I wish we could find a way to take an unblinking look at our past. We will see our present and our future in there.

His documentaries are true works of art. They will survive long after we are gone, just like the music of Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach (who all wore wigs at times).
I've seen The Civil War and Prohibition both. They're great documentaries that taught me much about the U.S. Ken Burns and his team are great ambassadors of American culture and history.

A lot of comments on kens hair. As long as he can put together docs like vietnam I don't care if he starts wearing a cinnabon with extra frosting as his hair. If anyone is remotely interested in that part of our history I strongly recommend checking out his work. There is something refreshing about historical works especially in our current political climate, they don't need to take a side, but merely faithfully display the sides and circumstances of days gone by.

Now more than ever, we need to LEARN from our history.. It'd be nice to do so once.

It would be nice to see an actual Vietnam documentary that talked about the 2.5 million Vietnamese killed (murdered) by the USA. Also, about the same number of US veterans killed in Vietnam, committed suicide back home. But Burns' documentary just repeats propaganda: "The Vietnam War was begun by well intentioned men..." Yes, well-intentioned men like Kissinger who said, "kill everything that moves."
The anti-war movement is dead. The US has destroyed Iraq, Libya, Syria and it will destroy Lebanon and Iran too. And nobody in the US cares. They only care about themselves.
Some people care, but they're a tiny minority. Most people are intoxicated with social networks and their mobiles. They have less and less connection to the real world, to other nations, to other peoples, to the ecosystem.
Served in the Army '71-'74, was lucky to get stationed in Germany. This documentary is excellent.
Love Colbert's Late Show, he has such a great diverse range of guests. I can't imagine this discussion on Fallon.

Sadly, T.V documentaries are not an Oscar category, although his work on the Civil War ought have won a honorary Oscar for its shere breadth and depth... it should be shown in every classroom studying American History...
... that saying, he won both an Emmy and a Peabody at least once, perhaps more ... a rare feat to win each ... so in a way, he has already won the accolades he deserves, although another Peabody & Emmy wouldn't hurt ...

If you read this, read it to the end, because I don't want it to come off as a rude correction.
"History never repeats itself, but it rhymes" has been attributed to Twain for decades despite the fact that it doesn't appear in any of his published works, but it's definitely an excellent quote. However, the cool thing I learned while finding that out was a quote he DID publish in 1874: "History never repeats itself, but the Kaleidoscopic combinations of the pictured present often seem to be constructed out of the broken fragments of antique legends."
Obviously, that is nowhere near as short, nor does it roll off the tongue as nicely, but DAMN. Is it just me? o_o

Thank you. Sometimes I think Twain is just as useful as a mythical figure, our homegrown prophet, as he is for what he might actually have said or written. Between him and Ben Franklin were covered for American aphorisms. If one didn't say it, attribute it to the other!
Been watching the Vietnam doc, great to see both sides of the story. Many families in my Provence are descendants from Dodgers. These families have been a driving force in many communities, and we're lucky to have them.
I've been watching this with my wife who grew up in Hanoi. We're both in our 20's so it's been very interesting for both of us and we've learned a lot.

Amazing work done for this documentary and the parallels are striking to today. It drove me to thank a veteran this past weekend only to discover he was a WWII vet and metal of honor winner. My grandfathers both served in WWII and have past over 10 years ago or more, I was so happy to have the opportunity to let "mi abelos" know through this mans service my appreciation.
This is the most excited that I've ever seen Ken, during an interview. It's like he did some speed and drank a couple of pots of coffee. He is one of the most relaxed, soft spoken people that I've ever seen. (IMHO) he is also the greatest documentary film maker, *_ever._*. He doesn't rush to production, telling half of the story, while hoping that the info in his film is correct. I always wish that he would do a documentary on Lynyrd Skynyrd, because no one else could tell their story and get it right. But then, I'm a big fan of both, Ken Burns, and pre-crash Skynyrd.

just watched the whole documentary... holy hell this was an eye opening, in depth look on what seems to be a turning point in American society and whole generation of people. The dedication and time it took to make this documentary was absolutely worth it, this is no doubt a masterpiece and everyone who is interested in modern history should watch it
Burns is probably the greatest documentary style director ever, this captured all sides in all ways, finishing up on this series, it is masterful masterful masterful bravo to him & his team

My opinion of Ken Burns went up ten notches after watching this interview. I'm a veteran of the Vietnam War and was never sent to Vietnam, but was assigned to supporting B-52 missions flying out of Guam during the early 1970's. I had a low draft number and decided to join the U.S.A.F. to avoid being drafted. My dad flew missions in the Army Air Force over Europe during WWII and I was the son of a war hero. I was conflicted about what I should do because I had a brother who was against the Vietnam War. I took the easy route and joined the U.S.A.F. hoping not to go to Vietnam and I also loved airplanes.
Ken Burn's documentary help's bring it full circle and sheds light on our current state of world affairs.

I'm not an american and I've watched two episodes of this documentary so far. In this interview , this guy is talking about the the hard learned lessons from decades of war and all people can talk about in the comments is his hair style. No wonder america is going downhill so fast.
Zafar abbas I totally understand what you're saying. It breaks my heart when a folks can't have a mature and enlightened conversation about the real issues without focusing on unrelated details. I believe for many its because dealing with such heavy subjects are is too stark and unpleasant for them. Well in life, everything can't be sanitized and molded for ones personal comfort. I'm an American but I'm not about small mindedness or what I call, " swatting at gnats" . I'm can only hope that you know that not all Americans fall into that group. It's just that there are folks enough in key spots that are influencing & painting really bad pictures.

I love the way Ken Burns speaks, it's didactic but has a clear and compelling narrative impact. I could listen to him all day and remain intrigued. Love that he quoted Twain: "History does not repeat itself but it does rhyme." It sure is rhyming now, right??
That haircut is a travesty but Ken is awesome, very interested in seeing this new documentary. He had an excellent appearance on Sam Harris' podcast a few weeks back.

I like Ken Burns but don't care for Sam Harris because Harris is a war mongering chicken hawk pretending to be a liberal. Harris mention doing a nuclear weapon strike in the Middle East. Harris is dangerous like Trump.
All in all, Ken Burns is a treasure for PBS. I support PBS and I'm continuing watching Ken Burns films.

Ken Burns is incapable of making a bad or even mediocre documentary. I have watched several of his documentaries - Vietnam, baseball, Civil War and the Roosevelts and every one of them is excellent. The man could make a documentary about the history of toilets and I would watch all 10 episodes!

It is an excellent and informative documentary indeed. I liked that they interviewed and addressed all sides of the war and got their perspective as it really fleshed out a lot of the ambiguity about the Vietnam War.
I studied history and even had class dedicated to the Vietnam war, and I still learned something new from this documentary. I knew there were similarities but had no idea about some of the specific events that are nearly identical as Ken succinctly put it.

My father was born on March 21st, 1955. He was terrified of being drafted from what he saw on TV and what his maimed friends said when they came back. The draft ended just a few months before he would’ve been sent off.
The terror and misplaced hate, and the complete lack of help given to those that fought...Yes, I would agree we don’t learn from our past and some of us don’t care if we keep ‘rhyming’ it.

The documentary is the BEST!!! The power of multiple perspectives makes the show a new standard in reporting.
Here is something I would like to suggest, which is an issue that is a common possible misconception: was the Vietnam tragedy really a “war” or an established form of supposed preventative (against the spread of communism) “invasion”?
I thought one of the more powerful bits was with the veteran who couldn't believe he was "in [his] prime doing something as terrible as war" or words to that effect

I really like these historic/more academic interviews. I would love if Colbert would do more of this like he did back on the Colbert Report.
I hope he lives long enough to make all the documentaries required to teach american history through viewing his documentaries. His work is a lasting contribution to education.
I'm following the series....it's like we are re-living the same exact scenarios today.

When he said "hearing the story from all sides" he mentioned the different Vietnamese factions and obviously Americans but nothing about Australia or New Zealand! who entered the war to help America, even the British (who were very tactically astute up until the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan) said no to the war as did canada and when the UK adviced their colleagues in Australia and New Zealand not to get involved they still chose to send troops!, nearly 500 ANZUS troops died in Vietnam
and many thousands were injured but no mention?, I haven't seen the documentary but I hope he at least mentions there contribution!.
They mentioned it in the documentary, but the series isn't over yet I'm sure we will see more of the ANZUS

I would hope so, I don't live in the US so will have to wait to watch the series, also (and I don't meet to be a dick here) I think anytime after 1951 they are referred to as ANZUS but the same thing as ANZACS!.

I don't think Colbert is a great interviewer, but he's a brilliant guy. I love the way he just shook Ken Burns hand at the end. He let him have the last word. That's a wise and poignant move by very smart guy.

I watched the vietnam war on the news as a kid. I remembered I was following up especially the events during that time. I followed as closely as I could. The U.S. were fighting for South Vietnam againt the north vietnamese communist.
I have yet to talk to a Vietnam veteran who likes your Documentary.
I love ken burns but have not seen his Vietnam documentary cause I know It would put me in a very bad mood for days, but can't wait for his country music documentary to come out
