  • This steep area of the yard was making it difficult to get up to another section where we planned on building a garden area so my wife thought it would be cool to make some stairs out rocks we already had on the property. I filmed the good, the bad, and the ugly and learned what I would do again next time to improve the design. It was fun digging and after two years (when I filmed this) the staircase is still holding strong!

I have been looking for a video like this for sometime! I love that you were resourceful and didn’t spend any money to create the staircase! Great job!

I had the same idea, but realized my land is only full of shale, and the quarries in my area want to charge a arm and a leg for some small stones... welp ill just make a gravel staircase then!
    Great video!

I started this project and now nervous the ground will eventually wash away. How is your holding up?

@@amberpalmer2042 zero issues 2 years later for me. If you aren't sure if your soil is "strong enough" to withstand rain then you may want to consider a good base layer under your stepping stones like road crush aggregate or bedding sand (looks nicer). You can typically buy a 40 pound bag of bedding sand for $10 at home depot or if you have a local gravel/dirt company you can get a truck full (yard) for $20-30. I fill up the back of my Van at a place like that and will never buy bagged dirt again!

What was the consensus on the sand! Was it helpful? Did you find the steps that were stabilized with sand/smaller rocks held up any differently than the steps packed with just dirt?

Honestly they all ended up working about the same! The only on I had to replace was a step that was too small. Thanks for watching!
