    Advice for first track day, get that instruction early in the day. Do your sighting laps, go out, do 10 or so laps, then get a professional to sit by you. I bet you feel like you wasted a chunk of the day driving too slowly. Accept you will be useless. You will have never driven the car so fast and you will not know what it is capable of. It takes , I’d say, 5 track days to even appreciate what you need to start working on. Trust the instructor. Maybe have another driving session with the same one in the afternoon. They are in another driving world to you. Forget what you think you know and listen hard. You’ll realise this if they steer a few corners for you from the passenger seat, or if they yank the steering to where they want the car when you thought you were on the limit of grip. You will hopefully get a debrief after the sessions, this is when you’ll learn the most. Try and get one corner right each track day. Do not set your goals higher than this.

    There is no BS on this channel, and I love it. You are very down to earth person - just an ordinary bloke. You are not ashamed of admiting that you are not pro. Kudos for that!
    I've been waiting for you to make a video about your track day experience. The fears that you mentioned - they all ocurred to me. Good that you pointed that out. Although I had different struggles as well (fear of destroying the gearbox in particular).
    The oversteer moment that you experienced is called brake oversteer. That and lift-off oversteer are (to my knowledge) the only oversteer types that can occur in FWD. Can be really scary when that rear end starts to dance 😁
    But man, that feeling of achievement when you tame the beast - it's intoxicating!
    You also had a very good instructor that kept adding new things (such as trail braking) as you did more and more laps.
    I'm only not sure about the helmet. Idk if it's required on that track, but modern cars have all kinds of airbags (including air curtains), so you would be safer without helmet than with it.
    Using helmet in a car with front airbag can only cause whiplash (due to increased weight on the head and being closer to the airbag when it pops). Helmets are recommended though when you don't have airbags, have a rollcage and 4 or more point harness.
    Keep the videos coming!

      Thank you so much mate! So many kind words!
      I do recon having a manual car would add another dimension of difficulty and I was very thankful for the dual clutch box.
      It's funny, I had fully come off the brakes (and was actually on maintenance throttle) so I recon it had more to do with the way the corner falls down towards the outside. Scary but very fun!
      I would agree with the helmet! Seemed pointless to me. Plus I had the added issue of wearing a motorcycle helmet which meant I had to tilt my seat further back than usual as it kept hitting the headrest.
      Overall a cracking time though!

    • @dsitum
      @dsitum 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@MickDrivesCars IMO, manuals are amazing for the road. But with automatic on track, you can focus more on corner entry and braking, making you faster. I know that we're not racing car drivers, but I would rather master oversteer control than some heel-toe witchcraft. Therefore, I ordered myself a car with DCT, just like you. Also, it's worth mentioning that track work makes us safer on the road (as long as we're not lunatics lol)

Love the raw reactions of genuine joy :) Weren't there any moments at which you were worried some more careless driver would cause a collision with your car? No, the same rules do not apply. Road insurance does not cover track days. You break your car, you pay, someone else breaks your car, you pay. You break the Armco, you pay. Other drivers are not too much of a problem though. Overtaking is by consent and racing/poor attitude with get you kicked off. If this is a concern, joint a club specific to you vehicle and do a track day with them. Less hot head teenagers in modified, stripped out wrecks.

  • @Trophy_R
    @Trophy_R 9 месяцев назад +1

    The brake fade if you experienced it is probably down to your brake fluid so it’s a good idea to upgrade that to something like I use, Castrol SRF but yes a standard set of pads will do a day but you would be better off swapping them over for the track day to a better set more track focused.

    • @MickDrivesCars

    Can I ask if you need to change your tires after a track day? I have had this from other people before and one of my mates took his Porsche GT down to the track didn’t change the ties afterwards and ended up writing up off his car very soon after due to lack of grip. For context I drive a IBMW G20 330i
