I've been wanting to read Waste and Dream of the Bat for a while now. The latter seems to be out of print, unfortunately, but hopefully I can find it somewhere second hand or from the library.

Rains is enrolled in a CA tribe but a hometown girl to Billings MT & is covering how early photography was used to create false narratives about native people. We’ve been lucky enough to help her with research & cross pollinate each others work, we are covering the perspective of a Métis photog from that group. It’s going to be an incredible documentary!!!

I very much respect your thoughtful analysis of Dworkin, and I certainly never knew her, but she was the architect of much of her own reputation. I think she very much understood that she wouldn’t win her fight but would be able to make more moderate theorists look mainstream. I think she 100% believed what she said, but knew she would not win hearts & minds, so essentially made herself the “toughest” bully. She was notoriously prickly & even as a sex-positive activist, I never actually disagreed with her analysis, but she was very unlikeable and, like many of the Silent Gen/Boomer feminists, worked hard to keep us Lesbian Avengers & Riot Grrrls away from any positions of power or voice-amplifying opportunities. Further, her rhetoric is now often used by right wingers who, in smaller cities like mine, are now shaming women who don’t consider porn cheating or assault. Dworkin had excellent points, but chose to ignore nuance & block sex positive feminism while using her terrible personality to make a name. She’ll not be forgotten in feminism, and her work will eventually be appreciated, but when you are extra mean in order to get more attention, baby you get what you get!

I think a big part of why I throw these more obscure titles into my channel is precisely for comments like this, summoning people who are bigger experts on these topics. I talked a little about Riot Grrrls in a video I did on Bataille, and how humor and nuance are the most monumental transgressive forms of critique. It may be very simplistic of me to say, but I think Dworkin lacked a lot of essential humor/satirizing in some of her takes.

90s feminist here, I cannot describe the spit take I did seeing Dworkin on this channel. I’m not a big fan but fascinated by a new perspective on the woman who created the “angry man hater” trope. No one can deny she was one of the most influential feminists of the late 20th century, and certainly aged better than Camille Paglia, who is disturbing but in a boring way.
