Hey Mark - we'd hit the wall trying to get our Smoke Bush uprooted, but your video gave us the confidence and tooltips to get the job done. Out with faffing about with a pruning saw to get at the roots and in with a Lopper from Argos that did the job in about 20 mins :)
I’m wondering how many hours it took to remove this conifer and how long you will wait before removing the second one. Personally, I’d have to wait at least a week after lots of pain relievers, hot soaking baths and working up my courage to do that hard work all over again. Don’t you have a third one along a pathway as well? Congratulations on getting this one gone. 👏
Haha. Ingrid, your message made me giggle. I have almost finished the 2nd one already. It takes about 1 full day each. But i did it over 3 separate dates. Yes you are correct about the third very very large one. I intend tackling that next week. Watch this space for a 'fast forward' /timelapse video. Best wishes. Mark
I did it in summer and took a half hour in the morning and like the same in the evening to get one out. So i ended up taking 3 out. spitzhacke was useful and some massive long ironstake.. This was past summer but i just cleared one 3 m tall conifer out and planted Eibe, which is a local native Plant. More suited for this Enviroment.
Hopefully not a stupid question here! But do i need to remove all the roots out of the ground or once they've been cut there ok to just cover with top soil? Thanks
Hi neil. I left several roots in the ground. I am confident that they will just rot away and be taken by worms and microorganisms. They haven't regrown. 18 months later. Mark
I started mine with pruners 😂😂after two branches I couldn’t move my fingers so I need tree loppers obvs . Are ratchet ones the best in your opinion? It’s like archeology haha. Thanks for the great video
Handy tips, I have a row of large conifers which are staying purely because they would just be impractical to remove, especially alone. There is one about half the size of the one you removed here along my back wall which I intend to remove so this was good advice :)
I av been doing this today digging out a conifer stump we avent got it out yet as I have a lot of roots to get rid ov first use in pickaxe it’s really hard work as these conifers av been in over 30 years n just need 1 ov them out !! Very good info n video good job 😊😊👍👏👏xx
Thank you we succeed & got it out !!! Wiv help ov neighbour aswell wiv a reciprocating saw really good tool I would recommend as cuts through wood I am deffo goin to purchase 1 ov these I also removed a Xmas tree took me few hours ov hard graft but got there in the end the result is amazing !! So much bigger in my garden after removing these tree stumps so glad I came across ur video thank you very much 😃😃👌xx
Oh best of luck. But take your time. I saw mine as a kind of archaeological dig. Patiently scraping away the earth with a grubbing hoe. Then cutting the roots. Eventually it wobbled. Don't strain yourself
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK thank you, yes thanks to your video I know how to tackle it now, cut the preriferal roots then wobble, there's no rush for me, will take my time, as I say the only trouble is it's been cut level with the floor. 👍🏼
I got myself a mini chainsaw, it's my favourite toy in the garden. I used it to get the thicker branches of a huge dead conifer off. I'm left with the stump now though 😔
Hi anna. I have a big chainsaw, but i did see someone using a little one earlier today on the end of an extendable handle. It made me think about buying one. Did you see how i got the stump out of this one in the video?
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK yes, I tried to get mine out, scraped soil and cut some roots, but I couldn't budge it, im only a 5' 1 weakling. I might have another go though after seeing this, bit by bit ☺
@@sid111sid111sid111 yes I have one and used it for the thicker parts, it's a great tool but the vibration hurts after a while doesn't it. I've bought a pulling manual winch, and might give that a go when I work out how ☺
@@annashiegl yes the vibrations can get too much, I had cheaper blades at first, but bought Bosch blades they are so much better, I still get vibrations but it’s a fair bit less.
This upsets me to see such beautiful beautiful green large conifers killed and removed, Im sure you could have made a dining area which incorporated them..
These trees are an absolute nuisance. People plant them because they are cheaper than erecting a proper boundary fence. Within a few years they become difficult to manage, acidify the ground, block out light, and impinge on the amenity of others.
I didn't want to use a saw on the roots. It was perfectly easy with the loppers. Also there are water pipes and electrics near the roots. Thanks for your input though Marty, i always welcome i different perspective. Both conifers and their roots now long gone. Mark
Thank you for this video, I female have been wanting to get rid of conifers in my garden for a while, now I have the confidence to try
Well firstly thank you! And I wish you good luck with your conifers. Do take care, take your time and just chip away at it. Best wishes. Mark

I'll look up Eibe I haven't heard of it. Maybe 'hebe'? Thank you for this comment, very interesting. Mark
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK eibe is the German Word .. btw it is a tree used for making bows since it is very flexible

Was intimidated by a big conifer tree in the garden that professional gardeners just wanted to stump grind. Going to give it a shot.
Well do take care and good luck. Did you see my video where we pulled the stump out using a vintage tractor? Mark
Great video 😊

Hi there the ratchet ones are more heavy duty. So it is easier. But they are heavy so take take care. Mark

Brilliant work Mark. Have my own demon conifers to face. Got 14 down to stumps. Hard work to follow now I know how to tackle the roots...

Great job, patience is a virtue. I've got to tackle one already cut at ground height, no leverage, wish me luck.

A chipper would make great wood mulch from those removed trees! Good ground cover.
I might try this because i now have huge piles of it! Lol
Thank you, really helpful!
Thank you Helen 😊
Mark - would you be able to plant something in it's place or would the old root choke it?
An admirable job! I'm really not a fan of conifers. Especially in my own garden.
Thank you. This was the very first thing I did when I moved here. A lot has happened since lol

I thought conifer mulch was toxic to other plants?
Hi Ray. I'm not sure if it is toxic, but i have heard that it is acidic and can alter the ph of the soil.

No. I wanted it out. And so i took it out. They are a nuisance in the wrong place. It's gone
