    Okay, let me break this down for those people who don't understand what HBCU dance teams do. The Southern University Dancing Dolls do a style of dance that incorporates jazz and hip hop with a Louisiana flair. With that said, the series of steps that you are referring to are called "CATCH-ONS" or stand counts which are supposed to be used while dancing in the STANDS of a stadium on a game day. The battle is supposed to resemble a STAND battle at a game and 8 -16 counts are created to go with every song due to the ability of the captain to time each count correctly. There is no twerking ,booty popping , shaking or anything going on in this video and a lyrical routine would not have been appropriate for this event considering it is a STAND BATTLE, which does not occur in other college bands culture. The Dance steps is not meant to "Match" but it is meant to adapt. These dance steps are a true test of the captains ability to adapt to songs on a fly because she has to "throw" counts on the go, this is not pre made up choreography, this is HBCU DANCE. To all those people who are trying to throw shade or discredit the Dancing Dolls for not being lyrical enough or matching the song to the "T" do not not and will never understand the passion and tradition of HBCU's , especially dance teams. They are meant to add a little individuality and distinction to a rather predicable thought of lyrical dance being done at a battle. How about you do your homework and look them up as well as the tradition of dance at HBCU'S.

    • @ZackryPaul
      @ZackryPaul 8 лет назад +19

      +Ulyber Mangune they are watching. They're called catch ons for a reason. Captain does it then the team catches on. If they weren't watching, this would be a mess.

    The Southern University Dancing Dolls are a class act and always have been! I can't stand when people "outside" try to critique a style they have no clue about! Soon as fine, talented, black women who are trained dancers gets some recognition with this band, those other people start with the "twerking, touching, or poppin' accusations! None of that is going on here.

      Tee V. Do people watch Alabama's or LSU or Mississippi States or USC's band and say where are the Black people? Really? Or better yet I watch JSU, PVU, GSU and ask where are the White People? People please Clear your mind of Race. Sexual preference Gender. Color. What ever. When I marched in SU band we were ALL male no Whites. Looking back I now know how terrible that was. And how it alienated a portion of people intentionally or unintentionally. Possibly very gifted. When is Society going to ever Embrace the worlds gifts of talent without bias. I had the pleasure of knowing and meeting thru my brother in law one of the greatest loving presidents ever. And I can tell my grand kids he was the 1st Black man to become president. But why did it take so long? When will we have a woman, Latin, Asian, president? Growing up I loved to listen to Tom Tom Club, B52s. Michael Frank's. Wham. ABC Heatwave Madonna. Eminem Duran Duran. Pat Matheny Kraftwerk Falco Simply Red.Lisa Stansfield Swing our Sister Eurythmics. The Police. George Collins. And 1 of my all time favorites Ms Lady T. Teena Marie. Not to say I didnt listen to MJ Prince Cameo Isley Bros Parliment 2live crew LL Nas Charlie Parker Wu tang Scarface Miles Davis Incognito Sarah Vaughn Bob Marley. Chaka Khan Aaliyah James Brown En Vouge CC Penniston Tupac Sade .I could go on listing ARTIST for hours. But Not 1nce as inner city kid from the D. Did I ask myself or for that matter care, can I like to or is it ok to listen to White Artist. And should I hold them to an acceptable standard(do they sound black enough) inforced by my peers. Who GAF. Thats a talented diverse list of ARTIST excellence. Good music is good music. Put yourself in a box you miss out. Idiots. Intelligence is intelligence. Athletic ability is Athletic ability. You cant categorize it. Its old its sickening and it will unfortunately be the downfall of society. Again I respect Drum an Bugle Corp style but I Also respect and love my HBCU style at SU but I be dammed im going to go on some Drum and Bugle Corp style Band like I believe SU played at University of San Antoinio or University of Lafayette a few years back and invest my time precious time to spew hate or negativity. People please love and enjoy people. Or you leave this world ignorant on your own accord.

    As a drummer of 15 + years, who's marched in DCI and corps style bands and with siblings who marched at HBCU style programs, I have to say this is incredibly pleasant and entertaining. They captured their signature style and turned an already powerful song into something gargantuan. The first hit was passionate and you knew everyone was feeling what they played. It's like marching band with electronic distortion. The heavy metal of marching music. Corps style performers far too often criticize this style because its loud and pushes the instruments' pitches because of that volume, but when its done right, THIS is the result! #replay #hellur #workmeout

    • @marvil_sf
      @marvil_sf 8 лет назад +10

      +Tyrone Adams I 100% agree with you. I'm a huge fan of DCI, having marched corps style in High School. But I was also always drawn to the High School bands that marched "traditional" (i.e., the show bands), which ultimately led me to the world of HBCU bands. In my opinion, having watched a handful of HBCU bands both via RUclips and in person, Southern University has consistently shown to have the total package over the years --- they have great arrangements, a signature controlled "electronic distortion" sound (not highly obnoxious/overdone yet still loud and in-your-face), clean marching formations, and are very entertaining. I remember my band directors criticizing the show bands, like what you've mentioned. But I never gave-in to their opinions. The two marching styles and playing styles are apples and oranges.

    • @danielowens3457
      @danielowens3457 8 лет назад +3

      I totally agree especially having marched at an HBCU for 4 years myself. We work very hard and like you said when its done right this is the end result. I totally respect the core style though and know you guys put in a lot of work as well..but you are right our style does get criticized a lot..but the folks who know HBCUs knows what's up. lol

    I find it appalling how all these white come on a video that has received accolades from all around the world and say "omg this is terrible," "the dancers look like strippers," and "how come this band is all black, if it was all white it would cause a problem." They don't understand the culture of HBCUs or black people in general. But I can guarantee you if Ohio State or LSU would have performed it first they would have been all for it saying things like "this was amazing" or "the musicality of this is outstanding."

    The Dolls are literally Black Girl Magic. They take what the world gives them and gives us poetry in motion. These all white dance teams can't hang. On any given day these 8 to 11 girls are inspiring the world and even moguls like Beyoncé have to pay tribute to them. Keep shining the light dolls. Dr. Greg was a pure genius who knew what he wanted out of his dancing dolls from its conception. He set the tone for what it would look like to have have young ladies represent what black females could be. It's all his mighty works and vision that we see as legacy. So the haters can just fall back and dance as mechanical as they can to feel good about themselves.

      I'm impressed by the speed with which this arrangement was done. This must have required many hours at the CD deck listening for all the parts. However, the performance is good but has me wishing for some stagger breathing during the chorus.

    Love everything about this Wow! The heavy metal of marching music. Corps style performers far too often criticize this style because its loud and pushes the instruments' pitches because of that volume, but when its done right, THIS is the result! Style of dance that incorporates jazz and hip hop, there is no twerking ,booty popping , shaking or anything going on in this video but greatness! Love the collaboration it works! Great Work Marvin Price! Band! and Dancers!

    Mr. Price, just a suggestion...you should incorporate more behind the scenes videos of the Dolls during the 2016-2017 season. I really liked the Battle of the Bands walk-in video which showed a different side of the Dolls when they were not performing. And the highlight clips that you added to Kayla's spotlight video was awesome as well.

    While most of the comments are positive, for those that are negative all I can say is there is definitely a "clash of cultures." HBCU Bands and Dance teams are different, not wrong, but again DIFFERENT. Before you start insulting the style of the band or dance team, do some research about the culture of HBCU bands and dance teams, the school, state, traditions, etc. you may find some information that will help you understand what you are hearing and seeing. Well done Jukebox and Dolls! 💙💛💙💛 #proudalumnus

    I honestly thought that SU was great overall and deserve the publicity they got. Im just sick of all the people criticizing them for their volume, their style, their image including the Dancing Dolls. Well guess what? Get the fuck over it and find another trend to pathetically criticize because SU is who they are, their own style of playing, and i believe that they handles those dynamics well. They are not Adele and wont just adjust to exactly her voice and music. I love HBCU bands and their style and if you do not like them you can just leave and not even comment or criticize them knowing you'll make people irritated. This band is marvelous in their volume and size and capability to learn and memorize an arrangement like this in merely a couple days. The Dancing Dolls are basically how all dancers from all HBCU bands are and they're not off, its just the way they coordinate their different routines. If you don't know much about HBCU please back off and keep your comments to yourself.
