Yeah some people have said I look too serious and should smile more. I was part of some Work programme and the tutor constantly told me to smile and relax. This just made me uncomfortable and self conscious, it didn't make me smile more. It also made me feel like the person disregards how I truly feel.
Everything you said is so on point! Every single person who gets told to smile always feels uncomfortable. Who actually thinks that they will make me feel better by just telling me to smile? You might as well just tell me "Hey! Feel happy!" People who tell you to smile don't care about how you feel, they just want to feel like you like them without putting in any effort. My dad died and I guess feel sad about it is getting old and annoying for my uncle because my he keeps telling me to smile and be more cheerful.
I know right :) WE really dont need to be happy all the time.Being thankful is more important.Love your videos and glad your brave enough to share you feelings.
Yes 👏 I get this a lot and I’m usually going through something I’ve lost my brother three years ago and me finding him at home put a lot on me and I don’t smile all the time and the people that tell this are not smiling at all it frustrates me to no end my blood boils and I try not to be mean about it but it bothers me a lot
I agree with you. I had a obnoxious woman tell me I should smile while I was waited in line for War for the Planet of the Apes. I asked her how am I suppose to look and she said I want you to smile. I just told her it doesn't matter and then she turned around never to speak to me again. I wish I had said something better but I wanted to end the conversation as quick as possible. I don't understand people sometimes. I hate when people judge me when they don't know shit about me. Now I understand how females feel when dudes they don't know come up to them and say that shit. People think that if they don't see you doing something that you must never do it.
I came across your video because people telling me to smile all the time when I'm concentrating at work has affected my mental health so much that I sometimes feel suicidal. It's like they can't accept my face the way it is naturally. No wonder girls ruin their faces with cosmetic injections to freeze their frown lines and lip injections to make their lips have a smile shape.. Argh.. Why can't people just let people be as they are!? Great video..
Yelp, like why should they be concerned about others' well-being? As individuals, we have enough to worry about, and taking on someone else's issues is too much
I also think it's ironic that it usually comes from people that aren't even smiling themselves. Too many people don't understand that humans don't always walk around with a big old smile on their face. Having a neutral expression is normal. It doesn't mean anything is wrong. However, if you see someone that you think looks sad or angry, best thing to do might be to say "hello" and introduce yourself or to tell a joke. You're much more likely to see them smile if you do that.
I've gotten this myself and like you said all it does is make you want to smile even less and piss you off even more. It's like someone's saying, "I can't accept the way you look, it's offensive to me so please change it so I'll feel more comfortable about myself." But I think the people who say it are too ignorant to realize they're being offensive and presumptuous. The thing is, the people who say it are the ones who will likely never watch videos on the subject, only those who have been told to smile will.
To me it's like "Looks like you're struggling, I have no fkn idea how to help you and that makes me feel SO guilty (I don't see why since my health is NOT your responsibility) so I'm just going to tell you to smile so YOU make ME feel better about this guilt, am I right or what? ;)
You should move to another culture like south east Asia or to any Buddhist country .. People live respecting others, if you serious they will respect it, if you feel not talking they will respect you, they will always say that everyone has the feeling to do something when they feel to do. No one can persuade or insist you to do so. I live in Bangkok and my gf has shown me this very well.
I've had a couple of people tell me I'd look a lot prettier if I smiled and it's just flat out rude and pretty patronizing to say the least. You shouldn't make happiness your main goal because life is very complicated so if someone isn't smiling then who knows, maybe they're dealing with the loss of a loved one or something so instead of saying you should smile, maybe ask them how they're doing. Also, I'm not here to entertain your ass ffs lmao.
I just don't naturally smile. I can be perfectly happy but my normal facial expression isn't a smile, it's a scowl. It takes a lot to get me actually smiling and simply being content and happy isn't enough to do that but it doesn't mean I'm actually unhappy. So keep your "you must smile" to yourselves. Thanks.
Facts... I appreciate the video .. 👍🏼 happiness is Finite it comes and it goes you can’t have that feeling 100% of the time doesn’t matter who tells you that you can. People that do this or try to Portray that they are happy all the time it’s called mental illness or they have some type of agenda and it suits them to make people think they have some deep Secret to life.. it’s bullshit like I said happiness and sadness is finite it’s called emotions but people want to put labels on things to fit whatever agenda or ideology they subscribe to... it’s cool to just be yourself and be content with that there’s nothing wrong with you and theirs no secret to be learned or taught .
I'm one of those people who if someone tells me to "Smile!", I rebut with "Die and I will." and have no problem with it. You don't know what I'm (or anyone else, for that matter) going thru at a particular time, and furthermore, what does my face have to do with you doing what you have to do in your life!?! They get angry when I say that and then I feel better because now I was able to make them feel as angry as they did me when they didn't mind their fuckin business. I remember one time I had literally just received a phone call that my grandfather passed away and on my way to my vehicle, some ass nugget stranger stopped in my tracks and told me that I should "Smile! It ain't that bad, whatever it is." Then it's always some bleeding heart coming to their defense, "Wow, was that necessary? They didn't mean any harm. Why would you say something like that?" Screw that, people need to start thinking about what they say before their mouths start menstruating shit that they should have no concern about. There's a difference between being genuinely concerned for something you notice about someone who seems like they aren't in a good place and someone who commands you to please their aesthetic standards. #NotSorry
I hate is so much i was told to smile many times by strangers om the street. And its like why the fuck are you trying to control my Emotions im not sad or mad i am breathing damn.
Thank you!!! Always thinking of what to say when I’m at work and people say this...I’m just focused not in a bad mood. So manipulative when people demand an emotional display from another
Glad you said it Telling some random person "Smile more" does more harm than good. It doesn't matter if they "meant well" because intentions don't always matter. The end result is that they end up being a Karen. Period.
My landlord just told me this after he fixed the security cameras & now I'm just really irritated. If i'm not smiling it's because I'm either tired as shit, hungry, I'm in pain (back, sides, legs), there's nothing for me to smile about, or there's nothing happening in the moment to make me smile. I'm 20. I have a mom that tells me what to do. I don't need the landlord telling me what to do. She's the only person who gets to tell me what to do 'cause she birthed me & raised me.
I was in an American Highschool and I am an international student from China. The teachers at my high schools did this exact thing to me when I was struggling through depression. It got so worse that I left that school.

Last week a random lady walked up to me and told me I looked “sad and concerned” when in fact… I WAS HAPPY. My whole life people approach me out of the crowd and ask me if I’m crying when I’m literally not. They keep asking me to smile. I can’t handle it anymore they’re making me self conscious

If you want to see someone smile, give them a reason to smile. Don't just say you should smile or hey smile or something? You're not going to win me over saying that.
I can't stand it when people jump out at me and tell me to smile. Or they tell me "I'm gonna get you to smile today." Or they might say "smile, it's a nice day/ it's not that bad" etc. I try to understand that they're just trying to be nice (i think) but those comments really just piss me off. First of all: telling me what to do is not going to put a smile on my face (unless you tell me to go home and do some artwork.) Second: you judged me at a moment's glance and you want me to change myself on demand for you. (F*** you!) Third: Really? You're gonna get me to smile today? I didn't know there was a contest. It's not that hard to get me to smile actually. All you have to do is present me with a big smile of your own and say "Hi! How are you today?!!!" It's really that simple.
