    Another great episode. Great takes on the Slack acquisition from people who have first hand experience of those kinda of deals. Awesome explanation about Alphafold and its future prospects. My favorite part however was Chamath's talk about his background and how much the complainers are out of tune with reality about the role and importance of capitalism. This is possibly the best podcast I've ever listened in on. I was born in 1954 and grew up to become a hippie, whatever that is. I remember most of the crowd I interacted with called the police "pigs". I was fairly liberal, but one has to draw a line. In a short time my friends stopped referring to the police as pigs. They stopped because I described scenarios to them and ended with a question. Do you call a neighbor, a buddy, a hippie or the police? Most of the answers started with a "Well, uh...". I heard so much bullsh*t about defunding the police and even abolishing police departments completely. In the meantime, one watches protests followed by or even erupting into looting, harassment, and injury to bystanders. Then there was Chaz, best experiment in stupidity I've ever witnessed live on TV.
    I think most people, seriously, most people don't really understand capitalism or democracy. I've been told by many millennials that Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk should have their money taken from them and given to the people who really need it. I didn't realize just how rampant ignorance in America really is until then. Don't get me wrong, not all of the latest generation expressed that, but a large enough percentage did, and that was too much. I learned very quickly that protests and violence does not make the problems go away. So I worked my *ss off to get into management positions from Night Manager at a fast food place to Plant Manager in other businesses along with acting chemical engineer (no degree) and other positions. I started at 17 and decided the best way to cause change is to join the establishment and work toward changing the system from within.
    I was partially correct and was able to create positive changes in a few companies. But, looking back I was stupid. I should have started businesses and led the way to changes in industry. I'm 67 now and it's tool late. I am glad to see people like you guys and others that are doing it.
    America may have the best of socialism, capitalism and dictatorships in the world. There are some beneficial social programs, economy based on capitalism and companies are really dictatorships. They all work together to make better value in life and create personal freedoms. So when you really think about it, all three work together in a democratic government.

    Protein structures are pretty "squishy". I'd be very surprised if they can design and engineer protein function just from the ability to predict its folding and shape.

    • @la_da_kid
      @la_da_kid 3 года назад

      This was my exact thought while listening to the explanation of the model

    • @benchpress200
      @benchpress200 3 года назад

      15 years ago, there was an explosion of crystal structures of proteins that were solved, which allowed us to see their shape and more importantly their active sites -- the location that carries out the chemical reaction functionalities of these proteins. A lot of pharmaceutical companies thought this would allow us to rationally design molecules that would fit and bind to those active sites. But turns out they don't really bind that well, due to this "squishy-ness". But maybe they can take a protein that we already understand and then use this algorithm to tweek it slightly.

    The references to communism mentioned here are misplaced; socialism is different. We must find balance and better regulate our current institutional systems in a stable democratic and socialist way, not violently overthrow institutions or get rid of all private property as communism would suggest.
    Capitalism in its current form is raising the standard of living for few people while quality of life for many is in general decline. We can point to many statistics that counter the general assumption of current “prosperity” in America. For example, rates of mental depression are increasing and life expectancy in the US is on the decline. The rate of homelessness is highest in parts of the United States that enjoy the most wealth. India has fewer homeless per capita than the United States, yet the GDP of the US is immensely higher. Relentless corporate growth/globalization has outsized pitfalls like climate change, fast spreading disease and subversive corporate lobbying. We are in fact on the path to lose trillions of dollars due to the impacts of climate change.
    Masses of hardworking people shouldn’t be spending their lives funneling capital to the independently wealthy in hopes that we must rely on the wealthy to “save” the public with their ability to own more assets and hire more human capital. Any recent IPO surrounded by fanatic discussion often caters to the wealthy through human capital service or rewarding asset hoarding (such as home rentals, food delivery, workplace messaging apps, ect…) I wouldn’t count these as true innovations for our society on the whole, but rather catering to a niche of wealthier people that will only continue to shrink as the prosperity gap continues to grow to more unimaginable extremes.
    Most scientists who create the amazing ingenuities of our time aren’t highly salaried and must rely on funding from our governments who are being coerced more and more into corruption through corporate lobbying. I'm hopeful for a future where tech and capitalism shift towards prioritizing the success of our ecology and general communal well-being instead of private shareholder capital-first interests. Capitalism will still be needed, just not in the winner-takes-all extreme we see today. Tech innovations will need to fix many of the ecological, mental and social inequities that have been caused through capitalist overconsumption.
    I challenge these men to question their definition of prosperity and innovation. I also urge them to invite others with varying viewpoints to their chat.

    Love the finance & tech talk, not the “socialism sucks” narrative. Basically every country is a mix of socialism and capitalism. Dems who lose like McCaskill lecture progressives, who win running on single payer even in moderate swing districts. It’s harder to start a start-up in America than other countries because of our employer based healthcare system.

    You guys missed a few key points re: the Slack acquisition. 1 Chatter became the collaboration glue across Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Einstein Analytics and their PAAS offerings. Nothing compares.. 2. Salesforce has Quip. I spent almost 9 years there and now operating in a Slack world. Quip is the king of the hill when it comes to cross collaboration inside (and outside) of an enterprise. Slacks interface is colorful but confusing... their freemium model is what got employees to use it even against sanctioned platforms like OneDrive (which is also horrendously designed). I can’t see how Slack does anything for SFDC except for providing an immediate bridge to another audience. Time will tell if that audience is worth (or will tolerate) the cost of an enterprise sales team the likes of a weekly forecast call team like Salesforce.

    Regarding deep mind cracking protein fold - its very similar to 4-minute mile. People were been trying to crack the 4-minute mile for decades (actually arguably for ~200 years) but once Roger Bannister cracked it in 1954, the floodgates opened and so far there are over 1400 male athletes that have achieved the feat.

    Can you please elaborate what Charmath meant by Slack having more usage on a daily basis than Facebook? Do you mean there are more data flowing on Slack's network than Facebook?

    To me Elon & Tesla have proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that if you make a great product, you do not or barely need any sales or marketing.

    "All these grandparents dying with 8million dollar family trusts"... Hmm doesn't seem to connect with a median savings of 200k within 60 - 65 year olds. The disconnect Saks and Chamath display from the average american's reality is palpable in this episode.

      Median doesnt mean there arent super wealthy grandparents retiring all the same, i see it just as more evidence of the top retiring wealthy while the bottom retires super poor, skewing the medians down. It could be our own backgrounds as well. I grew up w a poor immigrant family so 10 years ago, I woulda said they were disconnected from the average American too. Now, I realize i was just as disconnected about the people at the top (and what the average looks like) when i was at the bottom.

    Why would Chamath say that corporations primary communication was email prior to Slack. What about Skype for Business? That has been around since Microsoft bought them back in 2011. I have been using Skype for business for years before our organization started using Slack. Before that, we were using MSN and Yahoo. There has never been a shortage of chat at an organization. To be honest, I feel corporate communication is overloaded at the moment. Currently, at my organization, when we try to set up a meeting, we have to ask "Is it on Slack? Skype? Skype for business? Teams? Adobe? Citrix? Go to meeting? " It is such an overloaded sector IMO
