He'd be like lads I'll sign a note instead, get your photocopy from the Wizard.
That would've certainly extended this set of movies well beyond a mere trilogy.
He'd be waiting for gandalf to say to him "Go Aragorn, your oath is fulfulled. Be at peace" like the end of a DMV line.

@@barthoving2053 tbf Gimli spends the entire trilogy out of character. I really don't like dissing the movies bc they're amazing but they did Gimli's entire character dirty
They used Gimli as the butt of every joke and to make everyone else look good and noble by comparison. Very unfortunate.
Gimli's role as comic relief doesn't sit so good with me. Regular dwarfs would never break an oath.
@Old Monkey A dwarf would never break a promise

I've always felt that Gandalf bows to Aragorn because he realizes he accepted his destiny as the King of Gondor. Only the King could've released them from their oath. Subtle little acknowledgement to the King... always classy, Gandalf.
That and he's proud of his decision to let go of great power because its the right thing to do is the entire schtick of the Lord of the Rings.
And Aragorn sees and realises this, based on his face afterwards
Our good old Mithrandir
I always thought he bowed to Army of dead
I thought he bowed to Aragorn as a gesture of respect to a king of honor.
When I was a kid, I've always thought "why not use the Dead Army to cleanse not just Gondor but also Mordor and Angmar and all other areas of evil and THEN release them." But, he is a man of honor so whatevs.
я и сейчас так думаюXD
+Lovi Poekimo a MAN OF honor is a rare finding these days ....indeed!
+Lovi Poekimo The ghosts cant destroy Sauron. Only by destroying the ring Sauron will fall.
+Lovi Poekimo I agree, I mean its not like that got something else to do, their families are all dead.
To be fair if Aragon broke his oath what's to stop the ghosts just running away or killing him when they realise he won't give them peace. Also I'm fairly certain Sauron has prepared for something like this given his origins
"I hold your oath fulfilled. Go... be at peace."
This seriously brings a tear into my eyes. A man of honor.
The leader of the ghost army looks relieved feeling the binds of damnation being released. I felt at peace.
oh boy arent you a little emotional...
i feel like Aragorn could have made a better deal. he could say, “hey, i have a war to win. you have been waiting a long time. help me fight for a month or two, and then i’ll set you free. it’s not like you are going to die or anything.”
@@yesnickcarter No. He gave his word, and as the honorable King that he proved himself to be; he kept it.
They longed for peace for thousands of years, one that they had fully earned that final day upon the battlefield.
@@Valoelify i know he kept his end of the bargain. my point is that Vigo could have made a better deal. did the dead really have to sacrifice anything to fight in that battle? i haven’t seen the movie in a while. but the way i remember it, they just had to show up somewhere and kill some orcs, without worrying about injury or death themselves. i would have asked them to more than just show up and invincibly decimate my foes only once.
but i understand that Tolkien didn’t do that because they were just a gimmick to get through one more battle. that’s how every battle is fought in this whole series. the humans do the best they can, while another proxy shows up at the last second when all hope is lost, and decisively end the battle. that is the point of “the good soldier” in these books. do your duty and hold out long enough, and you may be rewarded for your sacrifice.
After they left, Gimli mumbled under his breath, "That still only counts as one"

1) If Aragorn would've refused them peace, he would have broken his oath, which in return would have not stopped the Dead from killing them all to finally get their peace. 2) The Men of the Third Age were Men of honour and as such, it was the right thing to do. Going back on the oath would have made them no better than Sauron.
+DraculaCronqvist Well put my friend, men before Aragorn sought and used power solely for the benefit of themselves and their people. Men like Boromir and Denethor think about vanquishing evil once and for all and saving everyone, Aragorn uses power too but he keeps his honour by having the courage to let go. It was not just morally right choice but it was a smart choice.
+DraculaCronqvist but their oath was to fight for him, not to fight just in 1 battle. Just like the previous War of the Last Alliance, where they had given their oath to fight. That lasted months in front of the Black Gate and before barad-dur. The men of the mountain could have at least helped at the Black Gate battle smh
They can't get peace by killing the only remaining Isildur's Heir, lol. Did you score -60 on your last IQ test?
@@bigboss9817 Not the same peace as they eventually got, but no oath could hold them anymore. They'd be doomed to a living death forever, but would never be held accountable. There is more than one type of peace, you ginormous twat.
But...since they are tireless, they could easily wipe out the armies of Mordor. So when Aragorn had chosen to summon them to fulfill their oath he could take them to Mordor. They wipe the army on both fronts, and then released them; But then having Frodo destroy the ring would be pointless. So its a good thing they got freed right then and there.
People seem to forget the Army of the Dead could easily slaughter the rest of Gondor and Rohan left since they can't be killed if Aragorn turned back on his word. The Army of the Dead were cursed because they failed to come to Gondor's aid in their hour of need which is what they did this time
And you seem to forget that they are unable to do physical damage. They are ghosts.
@@bigboss9817 Did you watch the movie? Fuckers were more that capable of causing physical harm.
@G E T R E K T 905 how did they kill the orcs?
In the books the ghosts didn't fight, they were used to scare the corsairs/pirates off their ships at Gondor's coastal cities. This also allowed Gondor's armies at those cities to sail to Minas Tirith to join the battle. So it was a double blow to Sauron in the battle: he lost all his Corsair forces and then Gondor brought their reinforcements on top of that, which is why Sauron's forces lost the battle.
So the ghosts were vital despite not actually doing any fighting.
IN THE MOVIE the ghosts killed their enemies with PHYSICAL damage, in the MOVIE.
Gimli casually wanting to deny an army of men eternal peace
To be fair, he likely only wanted to deny them that for a little while longer, until Sauron was defeated.

Aragorn’s first act as King of Gondor as only the King had the power to release them from their Oath. Powerful scene....
Actually, he wasn't King yet, and he didn't need to be to release them. He needed to be the Heir of Isuldur.
In the book, I think he declared himself in the Palantir and before the doorman at Edoras.
@@fredsafarowic3149 Yes, he had, but that didn't matter to the Dead. Being Isuldur's heir was what gave him power over them. All the kings of Gondor in the 3rd age could not have commanded the dead, as they were the heirs of Anarion.
For those curious that haven't read the books, the Army of the Dead never directly took part in the battle of Pelennor Fields. Their aid was a one time deal, but it was used to route the Corsairs of Umbar. Interestingly enough I don't think there's ever any mention of the dead directly harming the corsairs either. Their weapon was sheer terror, causing the corsairs to leap from their ships. A bit less OP than the movies and a bit more reasonable imo. The reinforcements Aragorn brings are the coastal garrisons of Gondor that no longer need to fend off corsairs.
so they were literal ghosts that can harm no living afterall? they're just useful for spook tactics? 😂
@@chattycookie5971 I mean, that's much more satisfying as a story element than "good guys have a literally invincible army that only doesn't sweep Mordor clean too because Aragorn bid low in negotiations." I love the RotK film, but the anticlimactic conclusion to this battle is my least favorite part of the film trilogy.
@@Rodanguirus even Peter Jackson admitted that he regretted adding the ghosts being able to cause harm in the movie
@@chattycookie5971 Exactly that. But do not discount the power of spookiness. Morale is one of the big deciding factors in battle and I envision their terror as supernatural, much like the Witch King's. For instance, if they made an army of orcs turn tail and flee in the middle of battle the other side would easily be able to run them down.
If I remember this correctly, you can see in the books, that everything has to be done by themselves - hobbits, people, elves and dwarves without super OP imbalanced weapons. Main thought - give free folks hope (Gandalf) and they will do by themselves. Good thought by Tolkien

"You told us that when we called upon you, you would come to our aid. Yet when the call was sent, when the armies of Mordor were at our doorstep and hope was as smoke...where were you? WHERE WERE YOU?! You are all naught but traitorous rats, hiding in the dark. Cowards and oathbreakers I name you! So be it. I, King Isildur of Gondor, blood of Numanor, do hearby curse you! I always wondered how a simple man, even if he was royalty, could cast such powerful curse. Then I remembered that he was Númenórean, the most powerful race second only to the elves.
@@moteroargentino7944 I'm beginning to believe that we all can if we're upset enough with someone...
@@moteroargentino7944 Because men in Lotr have (without them knowing) free will and their mind and spirits are closely linked to Eru, or god. The men of the mountains swore an oath and they betrayed it when gondor was in need. So when isildur cursed them, Eru signed of on it so they would not only be punished for their betrayal, but it was also a chance for them to make the right choice and redeem themselves. The fact that he was numenorean had little to do with it.
I wonder...Isildur had the ring in his possession by that time. Could that have enforced the curse?
The king of the dead’s performance is super underrated here tbh. Despite the fact that he’s obscured by All this cgi, we’re able to see the look of pure relief and peace that he feels right before he fades away.
Yes, even the actors playing cameos were great.
“You gave us your word” a powerful statement. And although the Men of Dunharrow did initially break their oath, they did in the end fulfill the vow they swore to Isildur or in this case his direct descendant. For Aragorn to break this deal would make him just as dishonorable as they were. Aragorn releasing them is a testament to the quality of his character.
An old debt finally repaid... Be at peace
Aragorn looks so satisfied with him self after Gandalf bows at him lol
You can see in 0:18 Aragorn expression, that in my opinion he didn't really want to release them because he still need them, probably know he can use them to attack Mordor. But he knows in his heart if he do that hes no different than Isildur who refuse to destroy the ring. It's also like everyone else says, if the Ghost realize that Aragorn won't release them they might betray him and kill everyone in there.
My Mom when I actually do remember to defrost the chicken:
It was a "one time deal". The king and the other undead agreed to fight once under Aragorn's rule, he agreed and promised them release and thus passing onto the the other world. It wasn't a bargain he could modify.
They finally got to Rest In Peace.. am I the only one who felt relieved when they were released.. like finally getting to go to sleep after being awake for so long

Well, not a luxury, a necessity thats lost for the worst.
Aragorn did right in releasing them. It would have been wrong to scum them. I however think that Aragorn didn't really negotiate enough before like win the war.
You don't understand the basic idea of storytelling
in the books Aragorn releases them even before reaching pelennor ...they only help them by scaring the pirates so i think this is an improvement
To be fair, at this point the fighting is over. It's up to Frodo and Sam to destroy the ring. The war won't be won by force of arms anymore. As far as Aragorn is concerned, the dead are no longer needed so there would be no point in Aragorn breaking his word.
@@lisahenry20 yeah and why did aragorn even hesitate. they couldve just destroyed all the people they saved in a matter of minutes, i dont really understand why it took aragorn a few seconds to even consider breaking his word. without them this story could've turned out quite a bit different

For all those who think it would have been a good idea to "use" the army of the dead further. It would have been extremely risky. They might have just go mad, and turn against the living, or perhaps Sauron manage to turn them with a similar offer. Sauron already proven to be very tempting, and powerful. Using an army of the dead against a necromancer is not exactly the wisest choice.
Also, if the Army was originally cursed for breaking an oath, than it would also stand to say that Aragorn himself would be cursed had he broken his word in turn.
Very true. I always was troubled by the logic of not using them but now after reading your comment I realise it makes perfect sense to not use them against a NECROMANCER who could potentially uno reverso the situation.
Gandalf: bows to the true king!
Aragorn: We don't do that here!

That's a powerful scene about sticking to you word and commitments. Aragorn held immense power here and he let it go.
The dead couldnt kill Aragorn because hes the only one who could release them, but they'd have killed his people and friends, maybe even helped sauron had he not released them. He did the right thing.
Aragorn knew better. Words have power in Middle Earth. Isildur cursed the Army of the Dead after they broke their oaths. If Aragorn had gone back on his word, he would have been cursed far worse.
This is also the moment he proves himself better than Isildur without question. Whereas Isildur lost allies and cursed them, Aragorn made allies and blessed them.
@@joaogrrr but they're gone now
I can’t think of a single scene in this trilogy that isn’t a great moment. Peter Jackson is such a legendary man for adapting this films to this quality. I know he went through a hard time with the Hobbit but I don’t blame the shortcomings on him.
While I do agree, the hobbit trilogy is what made me watched lotr. As well as discovering the man behind this legendarium.
Tbh I dislike this plot "twist". It's not horrible, but I never liked the idea of these power ful deus ex machina guys slaughtering orcs lwft and right. It made the struggle of man, of Gondor an Rohan, seem meaningless, because in the end the orcs were just swept away by an omnipotent foe.
I think the book did it better: The ghosts were unable to fight, but they scared the corsairs of their ship, thus preventing these reinforcements from arriving. Instead, Aragon rallied Gondor's troops from that region and shipped them to Pelennor.
The ghosts had their part, but they were not all-powerful gods. In the end, it was men that won that battle, the struggle of Minas Tirith and Rohan was not meaningless.
A real King - honoured his word. 👍👍👍

It could be argued that Aragorn could use the oath breakers to cleanse morder. But the oath that was made was to protect Gondor in its hour of need. Not wage war. If he kept the oath breakers it would be no different if he kept the one ring. Aragorn did right by them.
When you just went to feel peace about something the feel is so good when you let it go
Wouldn't be such a good idea bringing them along to fight in Mordor regardless. Sauron, though weakened was still the most powerful existing sorcerer and necromancer. He would likely control the dead army, it's actually quite fortunate that Eowyn killed the Witch King before they arrived in Pelenor. The Witch King also had power over the dead, as he demonstrated with the Barrow-wights.
Yup
In all of the _The Lord of the Rings,_ this to me is the most hopeful, beautiful moment. It is redemption from torment, final freedom from past mistakes. 💛 🙏🏽

Gotta love tolkeins subtle hints at forgiveness and redemption. Boromir, the dead.
Aragorn greatest fear is the weakness of Isildur runs in his veins. That he will fail the test. Here he is offered ultimate power and chooses to let it go. He chooses honour over corruption.
I mean... Having them go to Mordor and clear that place out real quick would not have been a bad idea.
The deal between Aragorn and the ghost king was only about to aid them in the battle of Gondor/Pelennor. not to wage war on Mordor and other places. If Aragorn changed his mind and broke the deal at that moment, I think it would be a disaster. The undead army will likely end up killing the remaining people around in the city including his team.
Maybe Aragorn could do that, for the ghost army to stay longer if they made the deal in the first place until the battle of the entire middle earth up to Mordor is over and has won and defeated Sauron. Then that would be the only time to release them.
Not a great idea. Sauron was the most powerful necromancer in Middle Earth. Controlling the dead or even the undead......that was his schtick. So what do you think would happen if you marched a ghost army into Mordor?

They obviously had no problem with killing anyone who came into their lair.
It brings tears to my eyes, even though "lads" were not honorable. Finally, dead men rest in peace.
They regained their honor. They deserved to be at peace
@@HalfEatenMedia Yes, just like Boromir had done earlier in the series. Redemption can be found.
