Excellent technique without expensive special tools. Managed to open my ipod classic 160GB to replace the HDD in less than ten minutes withou any scratches. Thanks a lot for the video. 👍
My battery replacement had a tool kit. One piece is a about 4" long, flat stainless steel with a knife edge ending. Perfect tool for opening the clips. I did find your identifying the clip locations very valuable. Something I've learned is that the batteries do not like cold. Even left constantly on a charger, battery (which I replaced maybe 1 -2 years ago) failed with temps in my garage around 40 degrees.
Love this video because it shows the locations of the tabs that must be released to open the Ipod, and because you know where they are it's much easier not to damage the case. BUT, if all you are doing is changing the battery, the only ribbon you must relase is the battery ribbon. Once you have done that you can open the case like a clam shell from the bottom of the Ipod with the top as the hinge without undoing the other ribbons. Then change the battery, reconnect the ribbon and close the case. Voila!
This whole process can be done without removing the hard drive. Pop the retainer clips and remove the back cover with it face down. You’ll only need to disconnect the ribbon cable in the bottom corner, then open the two halves like a book.
I understand it's hard to keep the camera showing what you're doing because, as you showed, it can be very difficult to open the little devils. Knowing where the pins are is important. Watch your screen when you're doing videos. This is key to keeping the important parts in front of the camera. So, could have been a great video, but your hand was in front of the camera lens at some important times, as well. Still a decent video. Thanks for taking the time to do it.
Good shot at showing how to get it apart. But your hands are in the way for some crucial parts. Like unclipping the hard drive and the lock and earphones cable. Had to go watch another vid to see how to CAREFULLY do that.
It took me a bit longer than the 19 minutes you showed but I had never done it before. Knowing where the tabs are is the key to this. So thank you so much for taking the time to make this demonstration. I wish nothing but the best for you!
The fact that you went to unclip all of the clips is unsettling and making it harder for yourself X/ like you only need to unclip one side then bottom and top and then pull the cover away from the clipped side and boom it’s opened. Much less destruction!
Not sure why you disconnected the hard drive - it's not necessary. Good video that is more accurate than others that use worthless nylon tools that are destroyed in about five min.
Bro , can you help me I have ipod classic 7th g and I think the hardrive is broke, because when I turn on he's give me error and with sound from inside the ipod, I think from the hardrive Am waiting the answer Thank u ^/^
I just did this and my old batter was stuck like cement. Had to pry it like it crazy. And it broke the yellow strip that lies underneath it. My strip was in between the glue and the battery so it was stuck to the battery. Had my iPod since 2008. Thought I’d have it forever. Probably junk now.
Need to be a brain surgeon in getting one of these things apart. I don't think Apple originally planned the popularity and longevity of the classics otherwise they would of made the battery easier to access. Had a go a while ago trying to pull apart. Ended up junking it as I cracked the screen and damaged the flat ribbon cable. **Didn't have the right tools so that didn't help either.
Hello use cutter blades I do not think it is the right solution there are repair utensils provided for this they are much less dangerous anyway after we do what we want if we want to take risks ........ Bonjour utiliser des lames de cutter je ne pense pas que ça soit la bonne solution il existe des ustensiles de réparation prévus pour cela ils sont beaucoup moins dangereux quand même après on fait ce qu'on veut si on veut prendre des risques........
I love how your hand is in the way for the difficult steps. Thanks
And here we are, in 2024 and this is still relevant. Thank you for creating this video and making life easier.

Hey Pops ! It was so much trouble and you took great pains . worth watching every bit - twice too .. Stay blessed!

Agreed. I used your method.
Why in God's name did he un-link the ribbons?!?
You make it look so much harder to get into than it actually is >.
Are the batteries on both the 120gb and 160gb same?
your the very first person who opened the ipod so complicated-looking hehehe

Hi sir thanks for sharing your experience with us
It took me a bit longer than the 19 minutes you showed but I had never done it before. Knowing where the tabs are is the key to this. So thank you so much for taking the time to make this demonstration. I wish nothing but the best for you!
It wasn't easy but it worked. The covers are on really tight.
Thank you for the video. You only need to unclip the bottom connector and dont have to open the whole iPod.

Under the battery the little ribbon that goes under the battery broke does that have to be replaced or is that just a ground?
You have to replace it and that cable is for the hold switch and headphone jack... sucks but they do sell them on eBay :/
While removing battery i broked below strip it was sticked with battery

Where do you purchase the replacement battery
ali express, they are like 14 dollars aud
Impressive you never used tweezers.
Nice pictures of the hand. The ipod....not so much.

Apple make things like batteries being hard to access on purpose, they want you to buy a new one instead of fixing the old.
Yep. It’s called planned obsolescence and it’s very judaic
Why couldn't they have used screws instead? Mines going in the bin!
like to make it harder for you
Recycle your electronics, don't throw them away, the lithium ion battery is bad for the environment.
You Just need a jeweler screwdriver easy
The very first thing you unplug is the battery, you unplugged other things with battery power still there, not a good idea.
easier to but a new one, I tried for about an hour, the older it is the harder it is to replace the battery.
I think i'll use an oyster chucking stainless steel mesh glove
ONLY 5 minutes to change battery or hard Drive....
Not as good as ol’ mate dank but still good
thats nightmare dude 07:45
used a scribe, it opened it all the way around with no problems. pop away from the body of the ipod
too many knives lol

You show nothing... Have your hands in the way of the camera and can't see how to take off or put in the two naps
No mention of static !!!
Static is a meme
You should remake the video with iPod being the center of the video, NOT YOUR HANDS!!!! Otherwise it was informative
a great video if you want to screw it up
If your hand ever goes missing, I would be able to find it in about 10 minutes.
Ya, by the time you get it apart it is completely destroyed!!!!! Come on!
MOVE YOUR HAND from in FRONT of the camera lens. Duhhhhh
Agreed. Your hands block a lot of things I need to see!
For all the crucial steps, your hands blocked the view totally. Wasted video. Had to find another.
Amazing how badly Apple made them. Junk
NOT PROFESSIONAL AT ALL
