Oh gosh, I was an ugly-crying mess as soon as I really thought about the lyrics. I’m in Boston, and even here, I can smell Quebec’s beautiful forests burning. Hearing this song performed with such heart and such beauty just made the whole thing horribly immediate, you know? I’ve been a Tolkien geek ever since I first read all the books in the fourth grade, so I have an emotional connection to this music anyway, but life imitating art in this case is heartbreaking. Safety and protection be with those fighting fires tonight - may they return safely home to their families when the flames are put out.

Geoff makes all four characters look like they are actually different people. He is quite amazing! I think we have his wife to that for that. She’s really creative when generating these characters.

Lovely reaction. I've had the original of this on my playlist for years & I've always loved it but I never really felt anything. The way Geoff has arranged this it just makes you listen to the lyrics, follow the story & it's beautiful.

Look, The Hobbit could have been done in two movies, but quite frankly, I'll watch all the Middle Earth I can get. As long as I don't have to read it. Not that I don't like reading, I just can't stand Tolkein's writing style.
Meanwhile, lemme ask you a question - if you know you're going to react to Geoff (or indeed Voiceplay), why do you even bother doing your eyes?

    I hear this, & I hear a prayer...
... whether it's for survival, for victory against Smaug, win-or-lose, what I hear is:
"Please don't separate me from my brethren. Whether we all live in victory, or all fall in battle, it's all the same...
...but please don't leave any mourners behind...
... I'd rather survive as a memory than go on without my kin."

I've never heard this song until Geoff did his cover. And I say that as a huge fan of Tolkien's works. How big of a fan am I? Melis anolya. Nás mara nin.
'The Hobbit' is my favorite of Tolkien's works to boot.
I guess I just wasn't as big a fan of Peter Jackson's 'Hobbit' trilogy as I was of his 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy? For a variety of reasons, many of which are good, though none of which would take away anyone else's enjoyment! I just say all of that to explain that I never heard or even heard of this song before I saw it show up on Geoff's channel.
... I cried my first time hearing it. And every time after.
We all appreciate when Geoff digs down to bedrock, but after a while, that's just candy. For me, what really hits is when Goeff does something heartbreakingly sweet. 'Blackbird', 'Till Then', and now 'I See Fire'. If he never hit an earthquake note again, I wouldn't mind... so long as he kept doing songs like this.

Q : Is it not impossible to be saddened by a Hobbit?
A : Oh, yes. Quite possible. And Even probable if they sing tales of friends and nature, singed by the harrows of war.
    AND, when they find out
    a) printer paper is out of stock, and
    b) a certain set of pens has a prolonged/drawn-out shipping time due to overseas origins.
    Just sayin.

I really appreciate how he didn't make this one big and bombastic like he does in some of his videos, but really kept it within that... almost somber space. This song isn't a victory song, it is the eye of the storm... that moment of calm before the other side of the storm comes crashing in against you, and he does an amazing job with that. In my opinion, he now desperately needs to do The Last Goodbye to round out the trilogy.
