I went into this one blind.
Was expecting a war movie, but man the story that we got was just so fucking good.
The rawness of it all, the soundtrack the cinematography, all so fucking good.
The last scene is mua, so dark and beautiful at the same time . Hope to catch this a few more times in theaters before it’s outchea
Also it was so good that I had to watch Spiderman 2, in the theater. I needed that pallet cleanser

I loved this movie. Unlike many people, I had no emotional attachment to what I wanted the movie to be. I appreciated the ambiguity of this alternative future. I also appreciated that the violence was gritty and raw. The purpose of the story was pretty transparent--a war like this is not something we should entertain (altho people do) and that in war there are no clear "sides."

Them having couches is really nice for guests to come on, and I think you could use on other shows like the team-ups over the headlines that fits the vibe of the table and high stools

Right now Gov Abbott is talking about succession....errrm. In the US, we like to cosplay revolution. War for us is entertainment ; like a video game. We pick sides like it's WWE. This movie showed what it might look like for regular people if Greg Abbott or one of the other hypemen called "government" were being serious and not hyperbolic. If we found ourselves with the bombs and bullets flying toward us. If our schoolmate decided to torture us. It was grim, violent and gruesome. This movie made me feel all the things. Once I put myself in the shoes of different characters, it was an emotional roller-coaster.

New subscriber to both channels based on the depth of the review. I attended a screening last night where there was a short Q&A with Alex Garland and some of your conclusions concurred. btw Stephen played Sammy not Stanley (minor detail!) Agreed, this was not the movie I was expecting from the trailer but I was pleasantly surprised that I was ok with not being spoon fed

Wow, what an outstanding video! I haven't seen the movie--and won't because I'm just getting a handle on some ptsd of my own--but I loved the thoughtful approaching the three of you showed in analyzing it and the issues you dropped for me to chew on. I'll definitely check out Wisecrack, and kudos to Evan for giving the Wisecrack crew some airtime!

You nailed the thing that turned me off of it - the marketing was ludicrous on its face. "Texas and California teaming up to rebel against the - " ...click. Off. No. Now that I've watched your overview I might give this a chance on streaming. A24 should send you a gift card or something. :)

On the topic of when should a journalist step into a story just as a human, you should watch Mad City. Great movie, though admittedly more about journalists inserting themselves into a story to make it more sensational rather than to help their fellow humans, but still close to the topic.

I took it as her realizing that what they are doing is essentially torture porn at this point, and that she would rather have the memory of him being alive than the image of him dead

My only issue with the movie is that they didn’t really touch on how America got where it is other than a passing the president took a 3rd term and got rid of the FBI

I'm amazed y'all haven't referenced 9/11 even once. No this isn't a cheap "I thought we'd say we'd never forget" quip, I'm just thinking that's an obvious reference point for what you were talking about early on re: average American seeing something they're used to seeing "over there", happening "over here". Maybe it's a generational thing? I was just about 30 when 9/11 happened...

So there was this movie in the eighties called Red Dawn. It was about an invasion of Russian forces on America. It seemed realistic at the time. They remade it. It was less believable and more of an action film in the remake. I can’t believe this movie can be as deep as that one. At the end of the day it just entertainment.

Blaming the issues people had with this movie on the marketing is a cop out. This movie is political regardless of whatever expectations were set up. There are scenes of people getting tortured. There are scenes of people having been lynched and scenes of mass graves. All of this imagery mirrors violence that has happened in real life which makes it political. You have to ignore all this stuff to pretend this movie is apolitical. Like the Jesse Plemons character is clearly a white nationalist but ooooooh you don't know if white nationalism played a role in the beginning of the war. Come on. This movie isn't being cryptic about the beginning of the war because it doesn't want to baby us, it's being cryptic because it wants to have it both ways. It wants to reference right wing, white supremacist violence but not appear too far left while doing so.

I don't think she was asking if was is inhumane. She was asking if it's ethical to be a journalist in a war just reporting and not intervening.
