Where is Syria Headed? with Hadeel Oueis

The uprising against the Assad regime in Syria has largely petered out, but the regime has not succeeded in regaining sovereignty over the entire country. Instead, Syria is today divided into three areas of control - that of the regime, supported by Iran and Russia, a zone controlled by the Kurds, supported by the US, and a Sunni insurgent area, supported by Turkey. The country is used by Iran as a base for aggression against Israel and as a key linking point in Iran’s area of control stretching from the Iran-Iraq border to the Mediterranean Sea. What are Tehran’s ultimate goals? Is this situation sustainable? Where is Syria headed?
Hadeel Oueis leads Arabic communications on behalf of the Center for Peace Communications. A native of Syria, she relocated to the United States following the uprising against the regime of Bashar Assad. She is also a reporter for the Saudi daily Al-Riyadh, and hosts biweekly programs on two leading independent news networks in the region: Iraq’s Al-Sharqiya and Yemen’s AIC. She appears frequently as a commentator on the Arabic editions of the BBC, Deutsche Welle, and Al-Hurra. Oueis has a BA in sociology from the University of Aleppo.
