- Fury Road! Is it the best Mad Max? I refuse to say, but yes, yes it is. I'm by no means the first to praise this film, but I promise you I noticed at least one thing you haven't seen before. So here's everything right with Mad Max Fury Road! Part 1.

The fact that this movie even made the - supermodel essentially liabilities wives - badass and brave, something Hollywood has a very hard time doing.
Right? Maybe it’s the fact they are actual characters that the audience likes? That they are have reasonable abilities and put through trails and tribulation? Like you know, normal storyteller stuff
Thank you! I love how realistic it is! They're trying and they're brave but they're still much more limited than max and furiosa. But they're absolutely not just sitting there screaming the whole time. I legitimately cared for every one of them

The football (or soccer for our American friends) coach of a fried each week had one player bring hype music to listen to before the match. When it was my friends turn he brought Brothers in Arms and everyone was so hyped up that they only used this song from that point onward.
Same with the "Big Blue" track from F-Zero. I was listening to it on my way to work the other day, then a cop pulled me over and informed me I had been doing 798 km/h in the 60 zone.

I was one of the warboys in this movie and I can confirm that as mad and brilliant as the film is, it's nothing to actually standing on a modded car doing 65mph across a desert with the actual guy playing on his flame guitar.

@@karrimgyver I've got a couple of mates who aren't really actors, just locals to where the filming is who are warboys for the upcoming mad Max film, it's not to tricky to get the part if you look right.
Why make up lies on the internet?
I think one of my favorite things about Fury Road is that, even after their pretty even fight when they first met, there never feels like there's much tension between Max and Furiosa. It might just be that threats to their life take priority, but they have no problems working together almost immediately.
I especially like the scene when Max is trying to snipe but doesn't want to waste their last bullet, so he gives it to Furiosa who already demonstrated she's really good with that rifle. He never gives the sense of "I need to be the one to save us" that some other male heroes tend to give off.
When she catches him when he falls from the rig,I can’t help but have the biggest smile on my face it’s one of the best moments of the movie
That was cool in the movie but unfortunately that is not how it was in real life. I remember reading stories about how Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron fucking HATED each other.
@@illwill1991 yee. Hardy tool the blame for it tho which is good for him. He talked about how he was stressed on making it big and how he was taking too many projects and the like and this led to him being an absolute asshole in the time frame. He owned up to it tho which is why i can still appreciate that, not a lot of people do that these days.

@@dkayflowers79 Charlize Theron also mentioned how worried she was about doing well on the project. She was super stressed and worried about making sure she wouldn't be the reason the film didn't do well. Especially with all the delays it had.
Honestly one of the best action films ever made.
I think we can objectively say, on the grounds of all around production quality and writing, that this *is* the best action film ever. I stand by this whole heartedly. 😆

You may cover this later but I especially love that this movie has MULTIPLE female characters AND uses them to express different degrees of femininity. Even the most feminine, the wives, aren't helpless, stupid, or damsels. They can't fight, but they pass Furiosa tools, use their body weight to protect her, etc. They're resourceful and Furiosa wouldn't have gotten as far without them. Innuendo Studios does a great video on it.

@@LN031 Yes but because she only had one foot on the bar, she slipped and fell. Her death was a direct result of his actions.
Personally I always thought Furiosa was stolen with her mother to be "wives" to Joe, but her mother probably tried to escape and was killed, like Furiosa says, and Furiosa herself was either unable to get pregnant or carry to full term, and so was turned free to the outside, where she worked her way to the top of being a respected member of Joe's forces. It makes her vengeful "remember me" at the end make perfect sense.

She's missing an arm, so I think it made her imperfect to be a wife anymore. But she was well liked, so she stuck around.

For all the movie’s insanity, the practical stunts make it all feel more realistic, which in turn makes the nightmarish beauty of this movie’s universe realistic as well.

Brainwashed, terminally ill warboys act like suicide bombers we see even nowadays. You never know what people act like when they are clinging for survival and on the brink of death. What I meant by “realistic” is: “Within the rules of the movie’s version of reality, the danger felt tangible and immediate due to the practical stunt work, as opposed to the CGI cartoon it all could have been in another director’s hands.” There. Ah what an amazing response! However it seems Dave is the sort of person who just sort of shows his contempt and quietly disappears. He doesn’t want to argue or criticize, he just wants to be heard.
Another detail that you missed, when the Glock's magazine is ejected, you see the rounds inside, they are straight up lead slugs. Because by this time most ammunition is extremely hard to find, and plating bullets is difficult. So the Bullet Farm is just a massive reloading facility which forms it's own bullets from straight lead, which in the comics works perfectly because Bullet Farm is built on an abandoned Lead Mine.
It also adds detail in a further scene: when the Bullet Farmer starts going after Max, Furiosa and the Wives in the Bog, using his tracked transport, he is very clearly shown pulling one of his own teeth and loading it I to a gun. Ingesting lead (which you would definitely do if you had dentures made from it) is notorious for affecting mental health, and might have influenced his reckless behaviours after being blinded.
I remember begging for this movie for Christmas and surprisingly got it. I sat down to watch it and my parents decided to watch it too despite my history of "weird movies" (anything that isn't a romantic comedy). I paused it at one point to go to the bathroom and my dad freaked out because he was so invested.
Something that made me fall in love with this movie is that every single one of the vehicles were custom built for this film, that and aside from the backgrounds and some environments, it was all practical effects.

this is really important. Miller is one of the old school directors, so of course he insisted on doing as much practical as possible. Every single car was built, in detail, for this movie. Even tiny details we don't see in the movie were handled like they are important.

Can I just mention how much I love the fight between Furiosa and Max at the beginning? It's shot amazingly, the characters are both using everything at their disposal, there's some genuine tension even after watching it for the fifth time and my favourite thing: It's not weird about having female characters.
Whether you consciously notice it or not you're shown that Max is kind of different from your usual action movie protagonist. When coming across a bunch of scantily clad supermodels in the desert he doesn't really care, he just wants the water. There's no moment of some kind of "My goodness I must protect these poor women!" there's just him trying to get the water. And the fight at the start doesn't have some stupid weird sexual tension, Furiosa doesn't pull a Black Widow and judo flip him by wrapping her legs around his head (seriously, that specific move is oddly prevalent with female characters in action movies), it's just two people trying to murder each other in a desert. It's wonderful. Which is an odd thing to say about two people trying to murder each other in the desert.
His pregnant wife was killed in front of him in the first movie. obviously he still loves his wife.

it makes sense in theory why women would do that move a lot: not that i'm a judo expert or anything, but it logically follows that if your opponent is bigger than you and has substantially more muscle mass, one of the best ways to take them down is by literally _taking them down_ to the ground and choking them. since you're a lady and fighting someone bigger and stronger than you, you'd want to throw all of your weight into destabilizing them, and choking them at the same time. so you tie yourself to their neck to knock them off balance, and then WHIP into the ground as hard as possible to attempt a knockout, then you choke them with your legs to ensure they can't reach your weak point(your head).
i could be completely wrong about this, it's just a thought.
@@malum9478 Optimally, you'd keep your feet planted and do a hip throw, then transition to an armbar for that. Even if they want to keep fighting, their arm will physically not work. You have the advantage, and gained it at much less risk than if you had thrown yourself at them.
One thing that I love as well, is that Furiosa clearly cared about the War Rig crew, there's a shot with a tear on her face as she sees some of them die, and the music that's playing as she drives the last car into the funnel is showing that they are human lives and worthy of acknowledging, but also that the girls that she's trying to protect are her priority

He missed the part where the engine's air intake was closed off before they lowered the front bumper to extinguish the flames with the sand... and then reopen again after. That was such a cool detail.
9:53 I always loved how the moment Max sees Nux's chromed teeth he immediately starts "panicking". He KNOWS Nux is gonna do something that will get both of them killed because he just witnessed (pun intented) another war boy blowing himself up to get a kill. Man I love this movie.
I especially love how the warboys, who are cancer-ridden, near-suicidal daredevil lunatic zealots, define Max as a "raving feral," and Nux declaring that he'll have Max's "high-octane crazy-blood" pumping into him is what gets him the driver's seat in that scene.
When I heard the close out all I could think was "what?!no,Wait!" I didn't even notice that was an almost 20 minute video.

17:00 It's commonly referred to as header wrap. It's used on under hood exhaust parts (usuallu headers) in performance cars to to reduce under hood temperatures so placing it that far down an exhaust system would work as great pipe insulation. So you're right, it would insulate the pipe enough to be grabbed without getting burned.

It's just sad a the more graphic R rated version of this film was not made. It was toned down a lot from the original concepts. The early storyboards were incredible pieces of art to look at. Look up Peter Pound (storyboard artist) to see his amazing work. If Fury Road was made as the more graphic variant it would have created new film world records in sales. It's sad the studios couldn't accept the risk / reward of going full hog.

The more evil and deserving of punishment an evil character is, the more visceralness I can tolerate in a film when its happening to them, because then I *want* to watch something awful happen to them. But if a movie is just a horror gorefest doled out left and right to everyone in the way, I can't stomach it. It ceases to be interesting as a film and just becomes a "well how messy can we make every moment and how much effort can we dedicate to making an audience feel ill", and there's already genres for that. Like, when I was young Saving Private Ryan was a fav growing up, but if every single action movie defaulted to being as messy as that, I think I'd dislike a whole lot more of them because it would feel so forced having to watch every character blow up and get dismembered in a different way. And it's traumatizing when it happens to your favorite characters (god like I hate GoT its pure sadistic misery), sometimes we don't need movies to have to face every consequence reality does. Sometimes it's good to have a stylized fiction break that doesn't rattle your nerves every scene, Fury Road is intense and full of action enough. And who knows if the sequels if they ever happen will ratchet up the intensity?

@@Robert399 Your wrong, look at what Mel Gibson did with The Passion. He took the risk and was rewarded with the highest ever grossing R rated film in the North American market. The film Joker has the worldwide record. If Fury Road was done full hog it would have blown everything else away easily.

Actually, if you think about it the doof wagon is very useful and could be considered the most important vehicle second to joes vehicle as it is essentially like a military drummer who were used to tell orders by music to the firing line and help with rhythm of when to shoot and reload, as it would be pretty hard to shout orders through the loud roaring of the engines and the metric shit tons of dust flying everywhere would make it hard to see, so the doof wagon would serve as an alternate way to tell orders.
Hell! You can even see it in action, if you listen closely when the door wagon slowly down, the guitar guy also slows down his rhythm as a way to say "slow down!" To the other war boys, and it can be used as a very large morale booster.
So all in all the door wagon is a very important vehicle for coordinating the war band of immortan joe

I never found the Doof Wagon to be over-the-top. It makes perfect sense. You're out driving in the desert with no radios. Having a sound vehicle as focal point for your convoy helps coordinate and send instructions, and it motivates your people. Your musician is like a battle standard that everyone rallies behind. Try taking a multi-day road trip with no music and you'll understand
16:00 I'm sad you didn't win the War Rig clearing the sand out of its engine, the sound editing makes its sound like it's taking a deep breath. The War Rig is not just a giant modified semi-truck, it's another character, when it barrels though the sand to clear the fire it's like a beast running on all fours. It makes it all the more heart breaking when it crashes at the end, it feels like you just lost a friend
That was actually a very dope detail that I love in this movie.

I never noticed that Max tried to chew off the driver boy' hand off. I thought the muzzle was just for post apocalypic show.
I always loved that hanging onto a door was how Splendid saved Furiosa's life and also was partly the cause of her death later on. It's almost like it cements this thought in the viewer moving forward that no idea could work more than once and not end badly the second time around.
Please mention the engine “breathing” after holding its breath from the sand scoop trick.

@@TheAzCorner Yeah I think they done it purposely to give you the impression that it is alive and as much of a character as the rest of the cast. Like when it’s destroyed it’s not just the death of a war boy and a truck but the death of their home that they’ve made this journey on.

Man, the way you highlighted the focal point shifts was so clear. It made an unbelievable amount of sense
Another interesting thing I thought of concerning the War Boys being all white. One, like you said, its so they can match Immortan Joe and it makes him seem less weak, but I always figured there was a practical purpose to it as well. White is reflective, and would help keep sunlight off of you. In a massive never ending desert where the sun is always pounding, being all white without exposing your actual skin would probably help to reflect some of that heat and intensity from the sun.
I can't be the only one who feels half the appeal of these videos is just seeing the insane effort and attention this guy puts into his videos. So good!
Also I love that the soft, dreamy slow-mo focus when he sees the Wives isn’t on their bodies, but on the water instead.
17:13 I've always thought that when she slipped off Max didn't see her go under the wheels and only said so because going back to get her when Immortan Joe is so close behind would be suicide, and I think the look at Furiosa and her look back is a silent conversation about it. She comes to the same conclusion, "if we go back for her this will all be for nothing." Better to lose one of them than to lose all of them
The great thing about that scene is that it's 100% feasible to read it both ways. It's totally likely that Max maybe didn't KNOW that Angharad was dead, but he knew better than to go back on the off-chance that she survived. It's too great a risk for no guaranteed success. But the other reading of it is that Max's wife and child died the exact same way, so he knows that it's very unlikely she survived. Both explanations hinge on Max's experience, both as someone who has seen death and as someone who's learned how to cheat it.
One thing I love about the rock rider chase is when they cover the war rig in sand to put out the fire, and when it clears away the rig sounds like it's taking a breath, as if it's a character of its own
Seeing the sand storm in theater brought chills and near tears at how good it was. Everything about it was perfect. Thank you Mr Miller.
I saw this film five times in theaters at full price. I went every single afternoon I had any free time. It's a fucking incredible film and I will go to bat for it at any moment.
Same! Saw it with a friend, another friend, a sister, both sisters, and then once more alone just for good measure.
That's a start...I'm sitting at 91 views in theaters since 2015. No joke. 2020 was a catastrophic year in that regard, but nevertheless I had the chance to watch it 3 times in Drive-in theaters in summer.
Always loved that Nux spins his car around in reverse during the first big action scene and all of the action is shot towards the back of the war rig so the audience doesn't see the sandstorm coming before the reveal.
I think I great point that was missed was that on Nux and Slit's vehicle you can see the Gyro Captain's Skull, Glasses, and Head Wear on the central spike
You honestly love it when the choir in the intro matches with any accompanied music in the movie's title card. Good for you, CinemaWins. Good for you.

The understated and almost "blink and you'll miss it" world-building is amazing in this film. All the explanations of how the world works are SHOWN rather than explained.
This movie was probably one of the best theater watching experiences I've ever had.
The entire Brothers in Arms scene comes together in so many amazing ways, and one of my favorites is the sound design. With the score pumping in the background, that simple breathing sound as the war rig's dozer extinguishes the fire sticks with me like a burr
The way this channel notes so many details and talks about them in such a professional way makes CinemaSins look like kiddy play
so this was me falling in love with this movie all over again. I never noticed the produce either.
I remember going to the movie theater to watch this movie, having no idea that I was going to be bestowed this colossus of a film. Never have my standards for an action movie lowered ever since my eyes were blessed with this masterpiece.
I think it may be one of my all time favourite theatre experiences. This movie had no right to be decent, nevermind good. I went in with zero expectations.
Now I think its the best movie of the century.
Same here. My mom and I went to go see some movie, I can't remember what. But all that was left for that were some pretty crappy seats, so we decided on this one. Best decision ever.
I went in with high expectations; The first one will always hold a special place in my heart and i couldn't stop watching the trailers for this one. But i've never else had such high expectations be so overwhelmed!
Added bonus of the mentioned shot-transiion (14:55 onwards) - since it seems Furiosa and the Rockriders are both moving towards the center, it is not only the focus on action moving fluidly, it also creates a sense of immediacy as both parties are racing each other.

My favorite moment is when they drop the cow plow thing to kick up dirt to put out the fire and with the score I can feel the War Rig holding it's breathe in hope then the dirt dies down and the vents open and it sounds just like it's taking a breath like the way a diver breathes after straining their body and lungs to reach the other side and the music picks up and yes the War Rig has its second wind!
He didn’t mention the lizard at the beginning being two-headed either, connecting to the nuclear montage.
I couldn't stop laughing at the warboy yelling witness while falling out the door i never noticed that.
13:01 I've seen this movie like 10 times and even I didn't notice Nux slowly making his way towards the front in all the wideshots
I actually studied this movie in Film studies and I went from enjoying it to absolutely loving it. It was great to hear someone mention the action tracking across the screen. I wrote a whole assignment on that alone and the Rock Riders sequence is a great example to show people. The focus on the action is consistent throughout the whole movie and really helps the viewer connect more.
It can turn what is otherwise a very noisy and hard to follow action sequence that would normally need some breathing room after it into a very cohesive and gripping sequence.
5 star review all round. And for any one who already loves this movie I would definitely recommend checking out the Black and Chrome version. It's a whole new experience
Personally, I think this is one of the greatest movies ever made. I have never really seen anything quite like it.

This is one of my top favorite films. Not only because the action is so good but because of the skill shown by the filmmakers. Just impeccable and breathtaking in every aspect!
It's weird how emotional I get when Joe sprays the chrome on Nux, like I'm happy for him that he's getting everything he ever wanted??

I've been binge-watching old 'Everything GREAT's and this is the first time when a multi-parter wasn't already finished when I got to it. The struggle is real waiting for part two! Looking forward to it.
Never noticed that Angharad slipped due to the blood. That is so sad, and also well thought out on the filmmakers' side.
The door comes off the vehicle because it was damaged in Furiosa's fight with the Buzzards, and possibly again when Nux fires the shotgun. So yes, Max is to blame for her wound, but in the end I'd say that all the major characters end up having a role in Angharad's death.
If there was ever a movie that deserved multiple parts, it is Mad Max: Fury Road
Thank you for finally getting around to covering this movie. It is one of my favorites, I have seen it a countless number of times, and yet you still find and point out these little details that I never noticed before. One that just blew my mind is that I never made the connection that the Warboys' salute looks like an engine. It just makes me appreciate the film and those who made it even more!
i kind of have a family history with this movie. back in the 80s, my ma lived in Aus, and her hardware shop was just down the road from where the mad max trilogy was filmed--- their budget was so poor they came into her shop to buy nails for the set building.
and then, decades later, I got to see fury road for my 15th bday and I get it, I really do.
this franchise is brilliant

Re: the win at 16:50, it’s actually likely that Dag deliberately pretended to struggle with the bolt cutters when she was trying to free Max, in order to distract him and give Furiosa time to ambush him. Note how she didn’t struggle in the same way to clip off Cheedo’s chastity belt. When Capable and Angharad have to work together to use the cutters, it makes sense because of the difficult angle they’re working in.

I love how about half the video is just him swooning over her eye color. Tbh I did the same thing watching the movie for the first time
I also find it rather appropriate. She is an extremely accurate shot, a trait shared by “The Many Mothers”, and her grease reflects this. It accentuates her eyes and gives it an sharp and intimidating look.

Well... though not stated by Bullet Farmer they do indeed recycle old shells, you are forgetting the gunpowder. The way they make it is not exactly known from the Movie itself so I can’t really say.

Nux has probably one of the best character arcs I’ve ever seen! I also appreciate that this movie, while having great nods to the OGs, works just as well as a stand-alone film.

16:32 spray paint can actually be used as an inhalant and the effect of spraying it under the nose would have some druggy effects. My guess is that because war boys’ health is already poor, the paint has a greater effect on their brain, giving them one last burst of energy.
I have never had more fun sitting in a movie theater than I did watching this opening night. This... this was why I go to movies. This absolutely gorgeous insanity made with real talent and love.

Seeing everything in frame and shot/edited this way just makes me happy. To me the film is perfect in every way, each element lives its purpose and creates an exceptional viewing experience every watch

B: Slit was the only one calling the other one Mediocre. I thought everyone thought that.
I watched this movie in the hospital while I was going through a hard time so it has a sweet spot in my heart, thank you for showing me how good this movie actually was.
I can't believe I watched this movie for the first time yesterday and was completely blindsided by how much I loved it.
It's great in 3d. They really did the 3d parts well and didnt over use it.
