    when I first saw the article on this game I was so excited I ripped it right out of the magazine, as I did not have money to pay for it. We nailed up blankets over the windows and played the game. We'd get so nervous that we'd have to throw the controller at one another, "here, you take it!"

      They got a nice taste after RE2 Remake. They rushed a mediocre game for the big cash-in. Then they released both games together shortly after. People call me a whiner. I just call bullshit when I see it. Remember when Capcom gave us free content? Free costumes? RE7 really milked us for DLC. Survival Horror has really gone downhill in the last few years. Sorry for the rant. I totally kept buying whatever was put out there. Not any more.

"i need to take x and y items and also take this key to unlock its doors along the way so i can discard and then might as well pick up that herb i passed earlier. i'll be using up a turn of the broken door knob so i should do that nearby puzzle so i shouldn't take my shotgun shells in that item slot. also use a grenade on the zombie in that one hallway since i'm going back there next"

    • @ViJolt28469
      @ViJolt28469 Год назад +1

      Yeah, it's the same that I do. I always take a few minutes to plan what routes to take and what items to pick. And since crimson head exists and even regular zombies take a lot of damage before falling down, It's like a strategy game where killing the zombies is the last thing I want to do to avoid long term problems. And because the shotgun it's not a 100% headshot rate, you are never too cautious.

    My first RE game was actually RE3 Nemesis on PS1 & I was totally hooked on RE4 years later on PS2. Never played the OG RE1 & so glad CAPCOM "remastered" (albeit not good enough imo) the game cube remake of RE1 so we could play it in this recent time. RE1R is definitely still a perfect remake of RE games so far.
    Shinji Mikami proved himself to be a master of horror game back then & still is with Evil Within games. I sure hope he bring something unique with Ghostwire Tokyo even though the key game designer of that game left the company.

    The tank controls, ASMR and fixed camera angles had a very profound effect on me as 10 year old. The squish of the zombies steps and the moans creeped me the hell out but now I'm sickly nostalgic for it. 2002 remake had a different effect on me, I was older and knew what the game was but was blown away by the reshaping of the tone and the obvious new bells and whistles the original didn't have. New areas, items and puzzles.

    What's very baffling is some of the new fans are saying that this isn't a remake and that "it's a remaster". No! this game is more than just a graphical upgrade and improved voice acting. The game adds new enemies, new locations, new gameplay mechanics, new boss encounters, redone puzzles and most importantly it gives us false expectations. These false expectations allow even veterans of the original to stay on their feet because everything you expected has been completely subverted. This is how you remake a game you add, expand, and improve not cut and downgrade. I rest my case.

    • @BWMagus
      @BWMagus Год назад

      Well, no; if I'm facing right at the entrance, and I want to go forward into the room, I have to push left, not forward, before I can do so. That's counter-intuitive and constantly fucking annoying as you have to adjust. If the game is smart enough to make sure that never happens, then it's not TOO bad, but many games aren't. Besides, why is my character so mentally handicapped s/he can't fucking walk sideways?

    • @helenhomunculus5044
      @helenhomunculus5044 Год назад +1

      Yeah I noticed that too, with him zipping around quickly with the 3D controls lol. The 3D controls kinda break the game imo, because it trivializes the enemy encounters since you can just easily run circles around them and juke them with little issue. The zombies are programed to move in a tank-like fashion, so playing using the classic tank style movement option keeps it more balanced since you have the same movement limitations as the zombies.

When they announced the RE2 remake I hoped they would have the balls to make it true to form like the RE1 remake but they took the easy way out and played it safe with the 3rd person shooter approach. I always feel really sad whenever i play the RE2 segment in RE Darkside Chronicles, because the graphics look like what I'd imagine a RE2 GameCube style remake would look like, ugh.....

      I think it's sort of like Inverted controls, some people are wired for it and some aren't, In my experience it's possible to get used to whichever one isn't my forte but it takes a decent amount of effort and with something like controls it creates an almost visceral disgust sensation when first adjusting which is a bit of a big ask for some people to get through even if it doesn't take long to adjust.

    • @MrSuperstargamer
      @MrSuperstargamer 3 года назад +5

      I think it's because it throws people off and don't like their movement be limited by these types of controls, most people like when a character goes to the direction they push the stick, and when that doesn't happen in a game like this, it tends to mostly leave a negative impression on most first-time players.

People complaining about the controls or ammo amounts clearly don't realize that it is intentional. God i miss those days so much. F-Zero GX,Resident Evil 1 2 3 4 and 0,Metroid Prime,Burnout,Splinter Cell and countless other great games. We were drowning in good games at that point in time,across all formats. Even the 'Middleware' AA games Synth talks about were great. Urban Chaos,NHL Hitz 2003,Phantasy Star Online,Black, the list is endless. Best video game remake? Probably yes. Best Resident Evil? It is up there, but I still like RE2 1998 or RE3 1999 more. Sucks we didn't get proper remakes of those two since both RE1 Remake and RE0 did not sell well.
    RE1 Remake is so good it does replace the original as the best version to play, though RE1 Director's cut 1997 is good too. Avoid the Dual Shock Director's Cut with its horrible new music.
    RE0, RE:CV, and RE Survivor are likely the worst RE games.
    RE0 has good moments, but it is a terrible prequel that does not line up with the 2002 Remake or the original 1996/97 RE1.
    RE:CV has a good opening, but has likely the worst boss fights and went full anime action.

    I love REmake, but one of the main shortfalls for me is just how uninspiring the special difficulty modes are. They could have done something really simple like making the zombies fast like Forest, or make dealing with crimson heads harder. The crimson heads are a really nice addition for new players but once you have some experience they become almost irrlelevant.

    Trivia
    1. The differences between Chris and Jill were 100% intentional as stated by the developers. I'm surprised you didn't mention that Chris has more health than Jill. Jill is definitely meant to be easier than Chris.
    2. I like One Dangerous Zombie mode (unlocked after being both Chris and Jill on normal or hard on the same file), but my problem with the gimmick is it can't be switched off once you unlock it. You would have to play a save file that hasn't unlocked yet to avoid playing with that mode activated.
    3. Real Survivor mode was the prototype version of the game. It was deemed too difficult for standard play.

    Have you ever played the Thief trilogy on PC? Thief Gold, Thief 2: The Metal Age, and Thief 3: Deadly Shadows all came out around the same time as the old RE games, from 1998 - 2004. In my opinion, they surpass the Metal Gear Solid series. They're my favorite stealth games and favorite trilogy of games on PC. I'd love to hear you're opinion on them someday! I'd consider buying them for you on Steam if you want to review.

    RE0 gets undeserved hate imo. It is the resident evil with the most item management, few resources, backtracking, hard and plentiful puzzles, difficult enemies (fuck the bat), beautiful scenery and ambient at par with re1re, it is long game. I would say it is the complete opposite of re3re, it is a resident evil on steroids.
    People criticize the lack of the box, but it is not mandatory to bring all the items with you, just as it is not mandatory to waste time burning the bodies in re1re, and it adds an extra layer of difficulty to the game. It is also full of lore.
    On the bad side, leechman music sucks, hookshot sucks, the bat sucks. Other than that i cannot think of any more negatives.

    • @ricardogarcia1172
      @ricardogarcia1172 3 года назад +2

      @@SyntheticMan I dont know why switching characters would annoy you. You can either go separate or bring both of them along for extra inventory space. Regarding dropping the items, you would usually drop them in the same spot, but if not the map tells you where you dropped the items pretty clearly.
      The story doesn't fit well that's true, but on its own it is okay.

    Not bad at all tho, sometimes frustrating

  • @lonewolfe6730
    @lonewolfe6730 3 года назад

    Totally agree with what you said. But despite the fact that Resident Evil Remake is one of the greatest games of its genre, there are still things it could have done and can be done better such as
    1/Improving the combat. The combat is clunky and lacking in terms of tactical depth. Resident Evil Remake being a classic survival horror experience needs not handicap itself with poor combat. Better combat encounters not only add to the challenge and tension of the game but also a greater dimension of resource management and decision-making.
    2/Making the handgun and survival knife more useful. These weapons don't do much damage and take up precious inventory space resulting in experienced players just stashing them and using the shotgun and the grenade launcher (for Jill) instead.
    3/Improving the camera angles. I've seen a lot of praises for the static camera angles used in classic RE games, but I haven't seen anyone pointing out some of their limitations. For starters, the transitions can be jarring and confusing for navigating corridors, movement controls (especially when you need to do some puzzles) and of course, dealing with the enemies. Also for some reason, certain sections of the game such as the road to Lisa's shed feature too many cuts for such a short distance.
    4/Improving Chris. Chris got completely shafted in comparison to Jill primarily in terms of story and gameplay experience. It's bizarre that Capcom has stuck to their gun about this issue. Why couldn't RE Remake be like RE2 Classic/Remake where the two main characters are on pretty even footing at the start of the game, and the differences and the gameplay experience between them aren't so marked and obvious. Chris is both harder and more frustrating to play.
    5/Improving the little things: allowing players to combine items on pickup, allowing splitting of items, better puzzle mechanics, a slightly larger inventory for Chris and Jill and the ability to drop items to reduce some of the tedious backtracking, upscaling the backgrounds and cinematics, a few checkpoint saves before bosses on lower difficulties to help out new players, touching up some of the story moments like Jill being a complete dummy when Enrico got shot to death Wesker just a few meters away, etc.
    Nothing is perfect, even this game. Several of its shortcomings are the inevitable products of old-school designs for better or worse. It can still be even greater with more work put into it.
