Stone age? Hardly. They didn't have firearms o cannons but they were advanced metalworkers, especially with silver and gold. I haven't seen any metal tools being spoken of or found but they had had tools and weapons that had more than worked for them at the time. Too bad they didn't decide to take the Spaniards' weapons from the get-go. History would be very different. They trusted them too much and had strong sense of the right ownership. .

Misinformation. The Spanish derived from the roman empire. An empire that brutally conquered most of Europe, Asia and parts of Africa. The Aztec empire was 80,000 Square feet while the roman empire was 5 million Square feet. The Spanish also were at war with the Dutch as Spain invaded the Netherlands and the dutch fought heavily for freedom. The dutch were master craftsman that had trade with China, Japan, India and Africa. The dutch mastered metal work, weapons, ship building, and had girls and boys educated. The Spanish were fighting to keep control of the dutch which is why they only sent 500 men. On 22 August 1567, Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba, marched into Brussels at the head of 10,000 troops. This is not ignoring the long standing wars between Spanish and the English. As king Henry killed his first wife a Spanish princess. The vast amount of wars the Spanish were involved in during this time meant volunteers went to the Americas not well trained soldiers. Currently the dutch, the English and the French were at war against the Spanish, the Russians, Polish and the slovic countries were holding back the ottoman empire thst was taking many European countries. That's literally why the trade between Asia and Europe stopped, the ottoman empire was taking over Asia and pushing into Europe. The slavic people were being enslaved. Slave, slav. It's called that because the slavic Slave trade lasted 1500 years. Hungary, Romania, Kosova, Morocco and turkey were all European countries. The ottoman empire took over Egypt and slaughtered the original people. It was all out war all over the globe and the Americas was a last ditch effort to gain the upper hand. Also, no one ever said the Aztec were faster than horses. Cortez literally said that they messages were delivered by runner and they could run 260 miles in a day. A great feat for one so small. The Aztec were average 5'2. It would be insane to assume they ran faster than horses.
