      Seeing that you own both, what is your thought on the fact that Porsche basically just released a GT4 "Lite" with the GTS having the 4.0 and is basically a small tune away from GT4 power? Honestly I think it is horrible thing on their end honestly and that the GT4 should have 440hp and not just 420hp. The GTS should not basically be a GT4 with less aero.

      Rubedo Alaberti already own the 981 GT4. I don’t plan on moving on to the 718 honestly. I’ll either upgrade to a GT3 or tune the GT4 with a 4.5 upgrade

      @@cdres74 The GT owners never had the engine power as their first priority...In my opinion the 718 GTS 4.0 isn't a GT car with less aero. It shares only the engine but the steering, brakes and the setup is a completly different story. Consider that even the 718 2.5 GTS is a way faster car than the 981 GT4 in a real world but nobody cares...They don't want to see the prices of the 718 GT4 going up, they want to have a 'similar' product to cover the demand...In my heart the 981 GT4 is the special one but not the better one...

    • @AB-80X
      @AB-80X 4 года назад +1

      A sportscar should first and foremost drive and feel like a sportscar. I prefer my 981 GT4 over the 718 GT4, but there's a lot of reasons for that, and the most important is how the car drives. If for instance being loud was everything, I would argue that a Ferrari 458 was a better spotscar than a 488, but that is so far from being the case, that one could easily think they were a lot less related than they actually are. The most important thing about the 981 is the fact that it connects you so much better with the car than the 718 does. The 718 does not leave you feeling detached, you'll need a Taycan Turbo S for an actual detached feeling, but it does not communicate as well as the 981 GT4 did.

      Alright, come on now. Apples to Apples. Let's wait until Eddie has driven a 718 GT4 with headers and maybe a straight pipe and then we'll see how many times he uses the word "soulless" and gets away with it. I get it, both the 3.4 and 3.8 sounded very sweet and the pitch was quite different compared to the new 4.0 liter. But I think a lot of that has to do with the particulate filters. The jury is still out here and the 4.0 has yet to be really aurally unleashed. Besides, if you're spending that much on a car, 4 year old 981 vs brand new 718, the factory warranty is equal to a lot of soul. I'm thinking gearbox issues and possible front strut tower failures.

    I think the GT4 981 is an amazing car but here is why the GT4 718 is a better car:
    1. Engine is better.
    2. Front end is more direct.
    3. More comfortable to drive, better chassis setup.
    4. Looks better.
    5. More low end torque.
    These are all the benefits the GT3 991.2 had over the GT3 991.1 and it was a better car. I'm just glad my car is arriving with a non EU exhaust system setup. Just heard it a few days ago and it sounds amazing!

      Better engine? Then why is the 718 Clubsport model sticking with a tuned 3.8L 981 engine? Faster around a track? Mostly the Cup Sport 2 N01’s, which you can mount on any GT4. A few aero tweaks are the only main thing.

      @AB-80X 4 года назад +1

      Do you have any actual 981 GT4 experience? All of your points are not only subjective, they are in fact what makes the GT4 the GT4.
      The 981 GT4 is for all intended purposes quite comfortable, very much so in fact. But there needs to be a limit for the car to do what it does. More direct front end? Not even close. Gear ratio is way off and there's far from the same sense of torque in the 718. Neither are very fast, but the 981 GT4 is a faster car on a twisty track. I had a friend of mine who's a very good Radical Cup and Challenge driver, chase me in my GT4 and I was in a Pista. He managed to keep up on a twisty track like Sturup Raceway. I was chasing a 718 this past Tuesday on the same track driven by a very decent driver, and I didn't even have to work to keep up. When I was past him, there was no competition and it was impossible for the 718 GT4 to keep up.
      It has grown soft, fat, and slower by comparison. You may not like it, but that's the truth. I could care less as I can purchase a 718 if I please, but I see no point as it's not as special and it's not as fast on track.

  • @sixpotshot
    @sixpotshot 4 года назад +7

    I agree completely that the the 981GT4 is the better car. Albeit some of my reasons are the same (much better sound and character) but some are different: it is lighter (better for tyres and better for economy more of this next and better for maintenance as it is free of cumbersome plumbing-numbing tech), it is more economical (it does matter if one uses it regularly and for trans-cont trips that some of us do), and it has a rock solid engine whose reliability is completely and totally beyond reproach - nobody can say the same about the new 4 litre engine still in its infancy. And then comes the performance: on a straight line the cars are matched and on a track about 75% of the 781 GT4 advantaged is due to its more advanced rubber as Porsche has admitted. Fit both cars with the same rubber and it will be the drivers’ skills and only these making the difference over a lap. This for cars similarly equipped as a 981 with PCCB and the same rubber will lick the life out of a 781 on a track. And least not forget the 981 GT4 can have its aero switched to higher downforce by opening the front ducts and change the angle on the rear wing - I am not sure if one can do the same on the 781. To me the 981 GT4 wins this easily and over time I am convinced it will be the car that will retain its value better or appreciate more.

    The big problem is that Porsche was too complacent with this “upgrade”. I’ve owned a 981 model since new, just as a buddy of mine has, and the ONLY things we wanted changed were shorter gearing, and at least 450hp. We didn’t get either, so neither of us is opting for an allocation on the new one, which sucks. As 991 GT3 prices drop, I’ll probably go that route instead, even though I prefer a mid-engine car.

  • @P1_TDT

    The point about the character of the car is real. All the reviews concur that whilst the new car is refreshed… it has become a more mainstream/softer offering and therefore loses some of its soul and character. Having driven both I can agree… the 718 GT4 felt much like I’d expect a GTS model to feel so for most people there will be no difference between a 718 GT4 and 718 GTS. 981 GT4 has a clear personality of its own.… it is slightly rawer, and less compromising. I actually found that the 718 Spyder I drove was more similar to the 981 GT4, than the 718 GT4 was to the 981 GT4.

    I’ve just sold my 991 Speedster and bought a 981 GT4. No regrets whatsoever. The 981 is more fun on the road (as you’re not shit scared by the value), can be enjoyed without fear of every 1k miles losing you £10k in depreciation, more fun on the road as it’s not too fast but fast enough and it’s the perfect size. Very happy with my GT4 and £220k in change! I’ve also experienced the 718 GT4 and would choose the 981 every time. In a few years I really think we’ll see values even out.

      You’re more than welcome. If you want me to share more on the PCCBs, and I’m just re-telling stories from other people… if you have PCCBs on your car I’d always opt to get tyres fitted at OPC or a reputable specialist. Why? When you remove the wheels, you have to be super careful not to clip the PCCBs. They can easily be damaged by the weight of a wheel clipping the edge of the disc and damaging it. When having to replace PCCBs they only come in pairs, so that’s around £8k GBP. The reason I mentioned get work done at OPC? There was this story of a guy who was driving in Europe, got a flat and had to get a tyre replaced. Used a local shop with no specialist training or equipment. In taking the wheel off they clipped his PCCB and didn’t accept responsibility for the damage, causing the owner serious headache.

    Availability and Cost have normalized. 981 Now ~105 and 718 ~130
    Sound still goes to the 981, but I think you can fix 718 sound with exhaust modification
    981 will always be the original GT4- still true, but this is not as significant now as it was when this video was made. Now that future Caymans have been announced as electric, the 718 will always be the LAST/FASTEST gas GT4
    Character/Soul still as valid as before, but subjective. I've never driven a 718 so idk personally.

    im not quite sure about his 5 reasons.. but i do agree with availability... there are more 981 GT4 available now.. Then he talks about the sound.. well the 718 GT4 has the 4.0L NA with sport exhaust as standard - which is loud.. and it has similar sound with the similar rev range.. .. Then the soul.. well, 718S were comparable to the 981 GT4 with the new chassis geometry, power delivery, and steering response, and motortrend and car and driver even favored the 718 S as much , if not, more capable car compared to the GT4..
    The other thing i can agree is that 981 GT4 is the original GT4.. thats all..
    Other than that.. The 718 GT4 is completely a great successor of the 981 GT4.. then.. ther's the GT4 RS...

    Agree with all points apart from the Original point. It’s not a 911. The importance of it being the ‘original GT4’ is a mental comfort blanket of white noise drowning out thoughts of wishing one had the very latest model. Nobody is buying a 981GT4 just because it was the original and I highly doubt, even in 30 years time, such a desire would exist for a 981GT4 as say, (30 years on since) a 930 Turbo.

    • @yetidh9
      @yetidh9 4 года назад +1

      I waited until the 718 spec was released before I bought a 981. There are two main reasons. Firstly there isn't a huge difference between the two cars. The 718 has a bit more power but a bit more weight too. Secondly they didn't improve the gear ratios, which are the biggest complaint around the GT4. The rest is subjective, although most agree that the older car sounds better. Personally I prefer the looks of the 981, in particular the rear. Having seen the crazy speculating on the 718, buying a lightly used 981 is a wiser move. If you can find a 981 with an extended warranty, why pay the premium for a 718? A lot went on the market due to the arrival of the new car, but I think prices will hold. The 981 will never be a sub £50k car. The fact that it is the original GT4 shouldn't bother owners or collectors for decades to come, and when that happens, we'll all be driving advanced milk floats. For now it's better to just enjoy these cars whilst we still can.

    • @julian987r4
      @julian987r4 4 года назад

      Yeti thanks for your reply. I highly doubt a 981GT4 would never drop below £50k. People said that about the Porsche 930 through to the Lamborghini Miura. I don’t think the 981GT4 would then remain sub £50k forevermore, but one day 981GT4’s ‘for some period of time’ will certainly be 40/50k. I think 40k is probably the lowest they’d go, maybe 30. If you can get a 981 GTS for £5k (inevitable, in same way earlier Cayman models now go for a grand or two) then the 981GT4 can’t command a 1000% difference.

      @@julian987r4 When a car is made in such limited numbers, is a great car that appeals to enthusiasts and is the first in a (possibly) long line of GT4 models to come, it should always demand a premium. Look at 1M prices. They peaked a couple of years ago due to speculators but have now levelled off at around £40k, whilst M2 prices have bombed and fallen further every time an updated model is released. I can see a similar thing happening with the 718 GT4, especially now the GTS 4.0 is here, then the GT4 PDK and the GT4 RS. If a 1M can command £40k+, then a GT4 should never drop below that sort of price. I guess none of us know the future but it's fun to try to predict these things. I'm expecting around £12k depreciation of a 981 GT4 over the next 3 years, from around £67k to £55k.

    Right Max Revs I have to defend us 718 owners. 5 reasons why the 718 GT4 is better than the 981 GT4:
    1) Much better engine. More modern, more fuel efficient and less emissions- but we don't care about that. We do care about that incredible flat torque curve, linear power power delivery and instant response. Sorry 981, that lumpy low down torque curve is not fun, especially with the long gearing.
    2) Substantially faster around a track (12 seconds quicker around the ring Vs a 981 GT4). This is not because of the slight extra power, it's because of the 113 improvements to the chassis, suspension, and other technical advancements I don't understand. But together they make it a much more capable driving car with noticeably improved steering precision and handling.
    3) You can buy a new one and spec it exactly how you want. You also get warranty and other benefits of a new car.
    4) Modern updated technology and car infotainment system. New PCM with Apple car play and remote connection control is a good update.
    5) Subjectively it's a better looking, sharper, design. The interior is a little nicer too.
    Bonus reason 6) The price of a 981 GT4 is about to drop now a 6cyl is back in the 718. If you buy one now thinking it will hold these high residues get ready for disappointment.

      I disagree.
      On track or on a spirited road drive, I can't see a torque curve difference being very noticeable as you'll be in the +5k RPM power band most of the time.
      'The Ring' time difference will be largely due to tyre technology improvements in the last 5 years and 12 seconds might sound like a lot but unless you're a Pro driver then you'll probably never notice the difference around an average UK track and especially not on the road.
      If you buy a 981 GT4 from a Porsche dealer then you'll get a 2 year warrantee anyway which is more than enough for most owner cycles
      The slight tech upgrades are quite insignificant in a driver focused car
      The 718 GT4 does look better in some areas but if either the 718 or 981 drove past then you'd struggle to notice the difference
      The 981 GT4 prices are at a low right now just like the whole luxury used car market. It's also not the season for buying a sports car and there are more available at the moment due to some 981 GT4 owners moving into the 718 GT4. They will not drop significantly IMOA and I believe they will be a modern classic in the near future. I'd rather pay £75k for a 981 GT4 with 5000 miles on the clock and 2 years warrantee than £110k for a 'flipped' 718 GT4. The 'improvements' simply aren't worth the extra money and the 981 GT4 will always sound better for those seeking a stock car.

      Porsche is using a tuned version of the 981 motor for the 718 GT4 clubsport. If they truly had faith in the new 4.0L it would be in the race car, but that aren’t. It’s an unproven commodity. A simple GIAC tune basically brings the 3.8 hp to current GT4 levels. As for lap times, Porsche even stated that the majority of the lap time difference was due to the Cup Sport 2 NO1’s, something that can be fitted to any GT4.

I prefer the styling on the 718 GT4. I prefer the cabin engine noise of the 981 GT4 and the exhaust. Sure an exhaust mod and removing the PPF will make the 718 GT4 louder, however the characteristic sound has changed. No right or wrong, just preferences. As we age, and speaking with Eddie off camera, there is an emotional angle too which is entirely subjective. This channel respects all factual and emotional opinions within reason.
