I just have to let you know what you've done for me. I've been on the fence for years whether or not to try playing the ukelele because using two hands to do two different things seems terribly difficult. These two videos have pushed me over the edge! I had a whole pack of light bulbs going off in my head....these techniques make so much sense to me. My wife probably won't like you too much (you see, I'm going to blame you!) but thank you for giving me hope that can do it! Mahalo!! (I hope that's used right, I'm an old hillbilly in SW Virginia!)

Is it ever acceptable to strum with your thumb instead of four fingers? Why or why not?

Yes. But to strum exclusively with your thumb tends to be massively disadvantageous and limiting. So I don't have my students play with their thumb as an option until they've already got a good general purpose strum with finger extension and wrist rotation first. Thumb strums tend to promote too much elbow swing, and blisters, and heavy-handedness. It can be (could be) soft and beautiful, it's just that generally, it does not tend to be. - jason

So needed to see this video to take me a step further. I had started do that whole hand strum, Whilst people around me seem to use one finger to strum I never felt as comfortable with the strumming until I started to use the whole hand to strum.
I tried various fingers and techniques but the strum you demonstrate here is the one that worked for me and it is good to know Im not wrong in adopting it, and thank you so much for demonstrating the extra strum tecniques, Like the strum "ka- ching" That is so great and so easy the way you demonstrated it. I do have trouble with keeping the up down, stuff in my mind.
But the, strum Ka- Ching, as you say is much easier to hold in my mind. I also like the simple way you demonstrated holding the palm on the strings to get that chucking sound. It's night here now but I can't wait to practise what you have demonstrated here tomorrow. Thank you so much.
Can't wait to play John Denvers country roads.

I was practicing the chords for country roads while practicing the strum along with you at 3:00 and then you said "this is good for early John Denver music" and started doing Country Roads......... :0

Very nice strumming tips for fundamentals technique development. I sense the tone in your movements. Some nice vocal, too, that greatly enriches the tunes. I'll study these. Thanks!

Your videos are so helpful. I hope you keep putting up videos! I am a beginner. I have never played a stringed instrument in my life. Your detailed explanations help me to learn correctly and not create (hopefully) bad habits. I love your sense of humor too. Your eyes smile when you smile.
